Readers will most likely have a modified version of Android 10 or 11 depending on the OEM. When Android 12 was in Beta, certain OEM handsets were compatible and fully supported by their respective brands such as:

Oppo Find X3 Pro

Nokia X20

OnePlus 9 / 9 Pro

Xiaomi Mi 11 / 11 Ultra

Xiaomi Mi 11i / 11X Pro

ZTE Axon 30 Ultra (only Chinese models)

TCL 20 Pro 5G

Asus Zenfone 8

Realme GT

Vivo iQOO 7 Legend

Sharp Aquos Sense 5G

Tecno Camon 17

This should give us a pretty good idea of which OEMs will be supporting Android 12 in their various capacities first, but let’s dive in a bit further. Brand by brand, here’s what we know about Android 12 dropping on OEM handsets. Side note – you can just download Android 12 from the Android Open Source Project and load it onto your Android handset, read more about the pros and cons here. Want to try it for yourself? Find our guide here, but this process will most likely void a handsets warranty alongside possibly negatively affecting handset performance and features.

ASUS – When will Android 12 be released?

ASUS has already started rolling out Android 12 updates for ZenFone 8 and 8 Flip as promised in December 2023. The update itself is weighing in between 2.89GB and 3.04GB depending on the handset model, but the update requires Android 11 to be installed first. This should come as standard when buying a ZenFone 8 or 8Flip from new, so there’s nothing to worry about there.

The current software version is 31.1004.0404.73 for ZenPhone 8 and 31.1104.0404.61 for 8Flip, the changelog can be found below:

Upgraded system to Android 12

Revamped Mobile Manager, Contacts, Phone, File Manager, Calculator, Clock, Gallery, Weather, Sound recorder, Settings, Data Transfer, Local backup, Setup wizard, System update apps

Adjusted Quick Settings panel, notification tray, and volume panel to Android 12 design

Added privacy dashboard, camera and microphone indicators, show clipboard access,  approximate location access, and microphone access features

Introduced new widget page design in Launcher. Adjusted the position of the screenshot option and removed the hot seat app icons on the Overview page

Removed the Quick Settings layout option in the Display settings

ASUS Phone removed SIP calling support as Android 12 does not natively support SIP calling

Some 3rd party apps are not compatible with Android 12 yet

LG – When will Android 12 be released?

LG no longer makes smartphones, but they still plan on making sure their high-end handsets bet both Android 12 and Android 13 support. Whilst the LG Wing and LG Velvet are confirmed for future Android 12 and 13 updates, the following will be eligible to upgrade to Android 12:

LG Wing

LG Velvet

LG V50

LG Q31

LG Q52

LG Q92 5G

There aren’t currently any concrete dates on when Android 12 will drop for the LG devices above. LG’s Android 11 update rolled out around four months after release, but don’t expect miracles with an Android 12 release. At the end of the day, it’s not profitable for LG to support end of the line technology. Let’s hope we get an update sooner rather than later.

Nokia – When will Android 12 be released?

Whilst Nokia has an excellent track record with rolling out Android 10 a month after AOSP was released and a less than stellar five-month wait for Android 11, Android 12 is slowly leaking out into the wild for Nokia devices. It looks like Nokia X20, X10 and G50 are all eligible and are receiving updates in various parts of the world, but there’s still no official statement on Nokias rollout structure for 2023 at the time of writing.

OnePlus – When will Android 12 be released?

Credit: OnePlus

OnePlus have always been on form with their One UI Android releases that normally drop around a month after the original Android release. Android 12s launched has been a little rough on OnePlus 9 series users, with the software update causing a plethora of issues when installing. This was all rectified by the end of December 2023, with Android 12 updates hitting the OnePlus 9 series handsets successfully.

OnePlus have confirmed that their OnePlus 6and 6T series won’t be eligible for Android 12 updates, which means any OnePlus handset from the OnePlus 7 series onwards should be receiving the update sooner rather than later.

Oppo – When will Android 12 be released?

ColorOS 12 is Oppos’ take on Android 12, and they’ve been quite organized about Android 12s rollout on their applicable handsets, albeit in Non-EU/UK/US territories. The rollout in locations such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Thailand took place in December 2023 with the full roadmap found here.

Sony – When will Android 12 be released?

Credit: Sony

With Sony Xperia 1 III and Sony Xperia 5 III receiving Android 12 updates in parts of Russia already, it seems that a slow rollout for the two flagships should spread over Europe and other territories at some point this quarter. Although we can’t guarantee it, a full rollout on at least these two handsets by the end of Feburary 2023 seems likely. Other OEMs are updating until August 2023, but this is for budget handsets, with flagship and high-end devices being taken care of by Feburary and March 2023 at the latest.

Vivo – When will Android 12 be released?

Why The Iphone Will Never Be Free

Why the iPhone will never be free

Back in August of 2011, I wrote an article entitled Why the iPhone 4S will be Free. As it turned out, the iPhone 4S was not “free” until the release of the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5S is “free” right now here in 2014, if you close your eyes and pretend you’re not paying for it in your monthly bill to your mobile provider. The concept I spoke of back in 2011 is dead, now, and I no longer consider said concept to be a possibility for Apple.

This week there’s a rumor that the iPhone 6 might be “free” upon release. Don’t trust anyone who suggests they’ve got some inside word on how Apple will deliver the iPhone 6 in an entirely non-traditional way with wireless carriers.

Tradition will hold. If the iPhone 6 is offered for “free,” it will be done in a way that’s very, very similar to the company’s lowest-tier iPhone in any given set of three. At the moment the three iPhone models available to the public through Apple are the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 4S. These three iPhones have pricing tiers which will be basis for the release of the next iPhone or iPhones.

The reason I use quotes around the word “free” for the iPhone 4S is that customers still be pay “full price” for said iPhone with their mobile data carrier. The price is tied in to the monthly bill they pay for services, even if they can’t see it separated from the rest of the cost markers.

T-Mobile USA has tried to clarify this mysterious mode of business – to a certain degree – in the recent past. T-Mobile’s most recent model for smartphone sales show potential users exactly what they’re paying for their phone in the long and short-term.

If T-Mobile USA doesn’t offer a free iPhone off-contract, there’s no such thing as a free iPhone. T-Mobile USA does not and likely will not offer a free iPhone any time soon.

Motorola is making a big effort to kick the cost of a new phone down to the bare minimum with the Moto G and Moto E. Given the iPhone’s speed of evolution away from its origin, a free Apple-made smartphone might never exist.

Instead we’ll have to rely on a startup to create an ecosystem in which a free smartphone could potentially exist. This company would need to provide near-impossibly simple means for brands to push their apps to their operating system. They’d also need to find a way to profit from those apps, and they’d need some big-time funding to create their “free smartphone” in the first place.

Do you know of anyone aiming to push a free smartphone to the market? Even if you’re reading article this several years after it’s been published, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s have a chat – on these free phones, if at all possible.

How To Get Android 12 Features On Any Android Device

Google recently released the first Android 12 beta build for Pixel phones, and select OEMs, including OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi, and many others, joined the party. You can now install the Android 12 beta on your compatible phone. There are a lot of new features in Android 12, including a new Material You design language, redesigned quick settings page, updated privacy indicators, and more. Now, many of you must be wondering — when will my Android phone get the Android 12 update? Well, we’re all well-aware of the infamous Android fragmentation problem, so it will take a while. So if you want to test out some of the new Android 12 features, we have compiled a list of Android 12 features you can get on any Android phone right now.

Get Android 12 Features on Any Android Device (2023)

Since Android 12 features are not natively available on older versions of Android, we have added the closest match through apps that replicate the functionality. We will be updating this article as developers release new apps, so keep an eye out on this one. That said, let’s go through the features you can replicate on your Android phone right now.

1. Android 12 Widgets

Google finally paid attention to widgets on Android 12 and has added new visually pleasing ones. You can try these right now, thanks to an app called KWGT Pro. If you are an Android enthusiast, you probably have purchased KWGT Pro or claimed it when it was temporarily free back in May 2023. In case you don’t have KWGT Pro, you can purchase it from Play Store at $5.99. Yeah, it’s a bit expensive but worth every penny if you like to customize widgets on your Android phone.

Clock Widget

Material You Widgets

If you are looking for more Android 12 widgets, you can install one of the apps linked below:

Check out Android 12 widgets for KWGT Pro (Rs.30, needs KWGT Pro)

Download Material U – Android 12 inspired KWGT (Rs.85, needs KWGT Pro)

Once installed, create widgets for KWGT from the widget picker interface and import the installed widget. If you have never used KWGT before, follow the instructions below to get started:

3. Tapping on the widget on the homescreen will take you to the KWGT app. Now, under the “Installed packs” section in the KWGT app, choose your preferred KWGT pack and pick the exact widget from the next page.

4. When you pick the widget, you will see the edit screen. Tap on the “Save” button in the top right corner to apply the widget.

Yeah, that’s it. You can now enjoy the more visually pleasing widgets introduced with Android 12 on your phone.

2. Privacy Indicators

Following in Apple’s footsteps, Google has added a privacy indicator on Android 12. With this feature, you will know when an app is using your camera or microphone.

Download Access Dots from Play Store

3. Privacy Dashboard

Google is also adding a privacy dashboard to Android 12 that logs all apps that have accessed permissions. You can use a free third-party app called “Privacy Dashboard” to keep track of apps that access your camera, location, and microphone. It shows you at what time an app accessed the camera or mic, the duration for which the permission was granted, and more. You can also limit the permissions to an app you think is misusing the camera, location, or microphone.

The developer has also included privacy indicators in this app, but you will have to enable them separately from the app’s settings.

4. Double Tap Back Gestures

Google is preparing a double tap gesture on Pixel phones that will let users trigger Assistant, take screenshots, control media playback, open recent apps screen, and check notifications. If you want a similar feature on your Android phone, you will be glad to know that there exists an app called Tap, Tap that brings back tap gestures to your Android phone. The app is open-source, easy-to-setup, and you can download it from GitHub using the link below.

Download Tap Tap from GitHub

5. Scrolling Screenshots

Scrolling screenshots is a potential Android 12 feature. While most third-party Android skins like MIUI, OxygenOS, and others already have the scrolling screenshots feature, there are apps you can use to bring this functionality to any Android device.

Download LongShot from Play Store

6. Wi-Fi Password Sharing

Starting with Android 12, you can share Wi-Fi passwords via Nearby Share from the Wi-Fi connections page. While Nearby Share has reached many Android phones, you cannot use this feature just yet. So If you want to share Wi-Fi passwords using QR codes on any Android phone, you can check our linked guide for that.

In case you are using an old Android phone, you can even use one of the apps from out list of best QR code scanner apps to manually generate a QR code for your Wi-Fi network by entering the SSID and password. Most QR code scanner apps come with a built-in generator tool and one such app is linked below.

7. Android 12 Notification Shade

As of now, we found no apps that replicate the rectangular quick settings icon design of Android 12’s notification shade. But the closest in appearance and functionality has to be “MI Control Center: Notifications and Quick Actions”. The app brings MIUI 12 ‘s Control Center to any Android device, and in the process, you get rectangular quick settings panels that somewhat resemble Android 12’s quick settings.

It’s not perfect, but that’s what we have for now. We will be updating this article when there is a better alternative around. Until then, you can use this one if you want to give your notification panel a fresh look.

Download Mi Control Center: Notifications and Quick Actions from Play Store

8. Android 12 Icon Pack and Wallpapers

Coming to the easiest customization possible, icon packs and wallpapers. If you fancy a clean icon pack to bring your experience closer to Android 12, you can check out the Pixel pie icon pack on the Play Store (Free, in-app purchase start at $0.99). You can also check out the Android 12 Icon Pack ($1.49) and Android 12 Colors – Icon Pack ($1.49) to give your home screen a look similar to that one leaked Android 12 screenshot from long ago.

If your default launcher doesn’t support custom icon packs, grab Nova launcher, Lawnchair, or any of the best Android launchers from our linked guide. To apply the icon pack, open the icon pack app and tap on “Apply Pixel Icon Pack” here. Then, choose Nova launcher or your preferred custom launcher from the next screen.

And for wallpapers, you can download Android 12 wallpapers from this Google Drive link, courtesy of Russian tech blog Rozetked. Rozetked has also uploaded a few additional wallpapers, and you can download them here.
