Why inactive email subscribers may be too good to dismiss

Conventional marketing wisdom tells us removing inactive subscribers from your mailing list is good practice – but is it? Here, we turn that wisdom on its head. I’ll show why inactive subscribers are still valuable to your business and explore how you can reactivate them. First, I’m going to tell a story of how I was recently shunned for all the wrong reasons and then give some ideas on a structured approach to make the most from inactive subscribers.

It’s simple really, I was recently removed from Dell’s mailing list despite spending around $40,000 a year with them online for the past few years.

In Dell’s eyes however, I was inactive. I hadn’t opened any of their emails for some time and so their marketing department had purged me from the list.

But the fact a customer hasn’t opened your emails doesn’t mean they’re not engaged with your brand. In my case, I simply hadn’t needed to open my email to buy any new computer equipment for a while.

Nudging customers towards your brand

Even unread, those emails were still a nudge towards the Dell brand. They were still performing a valuable marketing function whether it was in the form of an engaging subject line with the latest offers, or keeping the brand at the front of Dela’s mind. And in my case, they were working.

Our research has shown that customers often buy a product or service through another channel within 24 hours of receiving an email. Here’s an example:

Email marketing can create a powerful stimulus which prompts purchases even if the emails themselves aren’t being read.

Inactive subscribers are still engaged

Inactive subscribers are still valuable to your brand and can generate a significant amount of revenue.

It makes perfect sense to stop emailing someone you know would never buy your products again or who actively dislikes receiving your emails. But long-term inactivity isn’t a good indicator of whether someone falls into that category. There are 5 reasons why your subscribers may be – or appear to be – inactive:


want your email

, but haven’t needed your product for a while.

You’re receiving

false negatives

– your email is optimized to be read with image blocking on, so some subscribers could be opening it without you knowing.

The subscriber

doesn’t want your email

, but doesn’t care enough to unsubscribe.

Email address churn

– the subscriber no longer uses or rarely checks that email address.

They don’t see your email because it goes into the

junk folder


By far the largest group is the first one – we call these people the unemotionally subscribed. They will happily ignore your emails until they’re ready to buy, because it’s easier than unsubscribing and having to remember your URL or Google you later.

We’ve gathered plenty of evidence on this group and demonstrated that while they might not read an email, they’re still a very important customer base. For example:

When to remove email addresses

We have developed a simple strategy to help you decide if, and when, to remove an email address from your list.

I recommend these 4 steps to establish which addresses are truly inactive, and which fall into the unemotionally subscribed group.

Step 1 Start a reactivation campaign

. Try to re-engage anyone who hasn’t opened an email for more than 6, or even 12 months.

Step 2 Separate your lists.

Anyone who still hasn’t opened an email after the reactivation campaign should be placed on a separate list to your active recipients.

Step 3 Send the same email to each list and focus on activity

. The active list will now show a truer representation of engagement and your results will not be dragged down by the dead email list. After every mailing (or month), move anyone who becomes active again to your active list, and anyone on the active list that now qualifies as inactive by your definition to the inactive list. You can now clearly identify how much revenue is generated by emailing the dead addresses versus how much it is costing you.

Step 4 Analyze over time before deleting anyone.

Within 6 to 12 months you’ll have a much better sense of how long you should continue to email an unresponsive email address before removing it from the list. We have generally found it to be the point at which almost every person who opens an email for the first time in a while goes on to unsubscribe.

What Does Ppc Have To Do With Website Design?

If you’re relatively new to PPC, you might not think much about website design.

Instead, your focus is more likely on things such as ad groups, ad messaging, and conversion tracking.

After all, what does the design of your website have to do with PPC performance anyway?

Quite a lot, actually.

It isn’t just about how your website looks.

It’s also about performance.

And if users don’t like what they see or experience when they’re on your site or landing pages, then your PPC campaign performance will suffer.

This post will outline just some of the ways your website design can impact your PPC program.

1. Responsiveness

We live in a mobile world. Whereas people might have saved some online activities (such as shopping) for their laptop or desktops just a few years ago, today more of these activities are being conducted on mobile devices, such as tablets and phones.

The percentage mix of mobile versus desktop visitors varies. But even B2B businesses (often the last holdout for “people don’t visit our site on mobile” type thinking) are seeing more mobile visitors.

It used to be that having a mobile-friendly website was the gold standard for mobile usability. But not anymore.

Today, visitors want and expect a responsive site. Unlike mobile-friendly sites, the content on responsive websites is dynamic.

Images and content blocks can reposition themselves on the page, depending on the screen size on which they are viewed. In this way, they’re easier to view and navigate.

When your website isn’t responsive, usability is negatively impacted. And when usability is poor, users are more likely to get frustrated and go elsewhere.

And all that hard work you put into your ad campaign goes to waste.

2. Page Speed

Page speed is another design-related factor that can have a big impact on your PPC program.

A recent Search Engine Journal article stated that nearly 70 percent of consumers say page speed impacts their purchasing decisions.

The Unbounce study cited in the article found that a stunning 50 percent of visitors will leave a site if they’re forced to wait more than three seconds!

So even if your site looks amazing, if it doesn’t load quickly you have a problem.

Page speed is something we assess when designing paid search campaigns. And sometimes, clients are shocked at what we find.

These aren’t “homemade” websites either. They’re professionally developed – but that’s no guarantee that pages will load quickly.

We tested one client site, for example, and found that their mobile score was two on a scale of 100 (with 100 being fastest and zero slowest)!

As you can imagine, our client wasn’t happy with their developer.

You don’t have to wait for someone to do this testing for you. It’s simple to do yourself.

Google provides a tool for testing mobile site speed.

And another tool for testing desktop and mobile site speed.

3. Technical Errors

Another common issue with websites is technical errors.

Your site might work just fine for you and your staff. But then again, you’re probably performing the same set of actions with the same browser every time.

Potential customers, in contrast, might perform different functions that generate technical errors.

So if site visitors ever complain that some element of your site isn’t working, take note!

Even if you test the element and it works fine for you, don’t assume it’s problem solved. Keep trying to see if you can recreate the error. Talk to your developer.

4. Aesthetics

In addition to the technical elements of website design, aesthetics are also important.

By aesthetics, I don’t mean the shade of blue used in your template. I mean overall impression.

When a site looks “homemade” or dated, it calls into question the trustworthiness and credibility of your business.

This is especially true when it’s the first time a potential customer interacts with your business.

Just as in face-to-face relations, a bad first impression can be difficult to overcome online. This can undermine your PPC efforts.

5. Conflicting Objectives

As your business changes and grows, it’s not uncommon to add more content, pages, and functions to your website.

Over time, you can start to lose sight of your website’s primary objective.

Is the goal to:

Get visitors to buy?

Get qualified visitors to call, email or fill out a contact form?

Send them to other resources on your site?

Subscribe to your newsletter?

If you’re not careful, some of these objectives can start to work against each other.

And these can undermine your PPC program.

6. Internal Logic & Structure

In addition to consistent objectives, you also want your site to have consistent logic and structure.

As with technical errors, your site might seem perfectly organized to you. You can always find what you’re looking for!

But if online visitors complain that they can’t find what they need, then that’s a serious problem.

For example, we had one client where we consistently struggled to find the information we needed on their site.

Inevitably, we’d have to call them for help. They’d then send us the URL or help us navigate to the right spot.

This was time-consuming and annoying for us. Imagine how frustrated visitors must feel!

Get a Third-Party Assessment

Unfortunately, it’s hard to accurately assess your own website. You’re too close to it.

That’s why it’s helpful to have someone else audit your website for you. How easily can they navigate your site, find what they’re looking for and perform different actions?

That kind of testing will give you a more accurate picture of potential website design issues.

A Great Website Is Crucial to Great PPC

When you’re new to PPC, it’s easy to get caught up in the minutia of putting together a PPC program.

But before you put too much time into it, make sure issues with your website won’t undermine your efforts.

Because a great website – one that’s current, functional, easy to use and logically organized – is critical to your PPC success.

Forgot your Mac login password or even the admin password? Keep reading to find out how to retrieve them.

Reset Mac Login Password

When you first buy a Mac, whoever sets it up will become the computer’s administrator. The admin will set up a password, which is often different than the one you use to log in to your computer.

If you’ve forgotten your Mac’s login password, try one or both of the options below.

1. Reset Your Mac Login Password Using Your Apple ID

The easiest way to reset your Mac’s login password is to use your Apple ID. To do this:

1. Restart your Mac. After it restarts, enter your password incorrectly three times.

2. Reset Your Mac Login Password Using Recovery Mode

To enter Recovery Mode, you’ll need to restart your computer and hold down Command + R until the Apple logo appears. Then choose “Disk Utility” from the list of options:

After setting your new password, restart your computer. Try logging in with your new password. Everything should now be back to normal, yet with a new password.

Reset the Mac Admin Password

While you use your login password to sign in to your Mac, the admin password allows you to perform administrative tasks. You need these credentials to do things like removing some apps or accessing certain parts of your device.

Below, find out how to reset your admin password whether you have one or multiple administrators.

1. Reset the Admin Password (Single Admin)

If your Mac has only one admin, you would need to know your old password to reset it while logged in to your computer.

You can, however, reset it by going into Recovery Mode.

1. Hold Command + R to reboot your device.

2. Launch the terminal and type:

3. Select your admin account and enter a new password.

4. After confirming everything, restart your Mac.

2. Reset the Admin Password (Multiple Admins)

When you have more than one admin on your Mac, changing an admin password is straightforward.

To reset your iCloud password:

Forgot Your Iphone Passcode? Here’s What To Do

It’s easy to forget your iPhone passcode if you don’t use your phone regularly. Forgetting the passcode means not being able to access anything on your device. You can’t even access the option to reset your iPhone so you can set up a new passcode.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do when you forget your iPhone passcode. These methods include using some standard Apple tools to erase your device, remove the passcode, and then set up the device as a new phone. One of these methods helps you restore your data as well if you made a backup before forgetting the passcode.

Restore Your iPhone When You Forgot iPhone Passcode

If you’ve been using your iPhone for some time, you’ve likely restored it with iTunes to fix issues. You can use the same restore option to reset your passcode. This erases everything on your phone including the passcode and then lets you restore a backup if one is available.


You must have synced your iPhone to your computer at least once and you must use the same computer to do this.

You must have Find My iPhone turned off on your device. If you have it turned on, you’ll be asked to disable it which you can’t do since your phone is locked.

Keep in mind that’ll erase all data on your iPhone and then let you restore data from one of your backups. If your backups are too old, your data will be, too.


Your iPhone passcode should be reset and you should have all of your data restored on your phone.

Erase Your iPhone From iCloud When You Forgot iPhone Password

If you’ve never synced your iPhone with iTunes, there’s no way you can restore your data on your device. However, you can still erase your phone using one of the options on Apple’s iCloud platform, and that should make your phone usable again.


You must know the password for your Apple account as you’ll need it to log in to the site.

You must have Find My iPhone enabled on your iPhone as iCloud will remotely interact with your phone.

The great thing about using this method is you don’t need physical access to your device. It can be anywhere in the world and you can still erase it.


Open a new tab in your browser and head over to the iCloud website. Log in to your account if you aren’t already logged in.

Once your iPhone is erased, you can start setting it up as a new device.

Keep in mind that once your iPhone is erased, you won’t be able to track and/or perform any actions on it from the iCloud website. You’ll have to link it to your account again to do those things.

Use Recovery Mode To Reset Your iPhone

If you don’t have Find My iPhone enabled on your iPhone and you’ve never synced it with iTunes, your best solution is to use the recovery mode with iTunes to restore your phone. It’ll erase everything on your device including the passcode and let you set it up as a new device.

iTunes can recognize any device, even if it hasn’t been synced before, as long as it’s in recovery mode. The main purpose of this mode is to help you restore your devices when you can’t access your devices or they won’t boot up for some reason.

Boot Your iPhone Into Recovery Mode

Depending on what iPhone model you have, you’ll need to use appropriate steps to put your device into recovery mode. Keep iTunes or Finder open while doing so.

iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X, or Later

Turn off your phone.

Hold down the Side button and connect your iPhone to your computer.

iPhone 7/7 Plus

Power off your phone.

Press and hold down the Volume Down button and connect your phone to your computer.

Don’t let go of the button until you see the recovery screen.

iPhone 6S or Earlier

Switch off your phone.

Press and hold down the Home button and plug in your iPhone to your computer.

Let go of the Home button when you see the recovery screen.

Restore An iPhone In Recovery Mode Using iTunes

It’ll download the required firmware and install it on your iPhone.
