At this point, it’s okay to express your disappointment in cryptocurrency. Many analysts have even gone from praising cryptocurrency as the next big thing that has happened to finance, to a fearsome hell and Ponzi scheme. However, all these criticisms do not derail the fact that cryptocurrency will form a major part of our internet’s future. All it needs now more than ever is the government’s go-ahead to consolidate its place as the currency of the people. The rising global inflation rate and uncertain market times have made the future appear to be bleak. However, this is not the first time a situation like this is happening; we weren’t just prepared for it. Now, all we can do is research safe havens to store our assets and values: a possibility presented by cryptocurrency and DeFi in general. These three cryptocurrencies including

Antarctic Methane Is Leaking And The Climate Change Impact Could Be Huge
Antarctic methane is leaking and the climate change impact could be huge
A new source of methane leaking into the Antarctic ocean has been discovered, with concern about how the greenhouse gas could be driving climate change. Although so-called methane seeps – where the gas bubbles out from an underground reservoir and into the ocean – have been identified in multiple locations around the world, this latest example is the first to have been spotted in Antarctica.
It’s the handiwork of a team of marine ecologists from Oregon State University, and the subject of a study published today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. While this may not be the first methane seep identified, the researchers believe it to be “fundamentally different” to others.
Typically, methane seeps would be accompanied by a microbial mat: a layer of bacteria which live on the microbes that feed on methane. While this Antarctic seep does have a microbial mat – indeed, it’s around 230 feet long and 3 feet in width – roughly 32 feet beneath the frozen surface of the ocean, it’s not been behaving as others might. Developing later than previous models would have predicted, the microbes in the mat aren’t consuming all the methane, either.
That means it’s likely that at least some of the gas is escaping into the atmosphere, the researchers suggest. Given how potent a contributor to atmospheric warming methane is, that’s a worrying discovery.
“Methane is the second-most effective gas at warming our atmosphere and the Antarctic has vast reservoirs that are likely to open up as ice sheets retreat due to climate change,” Andrew Thurber, one of the authors on the study, explains. “This is a significant discovery that can help fill a large hole in our understanding of the methane cycle.”
In the course of five years of studying the seep, and the way the microbial mat formed, assumptions about how rapid those microbes colonize the area were challenged. The most common sort of methane-consuming microbes didn’t appear until after five years after the seep formed in 2011, for example. Scientists had previously believed that it would be a far quicker process.
“What was really interesting and exciting was that the microbial community did not develop as we would have predicted based on other methane seeps we have studied around the globe,” study co-author Sarah Seabrook explains.
The hope is that, through further examination of the methane seep and the ecosystem forming around it, the team can figure out whether this atypical development is something pretty much exclusive to the Antarctic regions, or in fact a sign of how all seeps are early on in their lifespan.
Lending weight to the concern is the sheer quantity of methane that’s believed to be trapped under Antarctica. The region is believed to contain a quarter of Earth’s marine methane, in fact, and until now it was unclear just how much, if any, was escaping into the planet’s atmosphere.
Subscriptions, Not Specs, Could Settle The Next
Subscriptions, not specs, could settle the next-gen Xbox vs PlayStation war
Generally speaking, the console wars come down to one of two things for a lot of people: hardware and games. Some people compare spec sheets to determine which console is for them, while others look at launch titles and exclusive game lineups to make their decisions. This generation, though, subscriptions may wind up being the difference maker for some, specifically in the case Xbox Game Pass.
Earlier today, Microsoft held an Xbox Series X game showcase where it revealed a number of first-party titles in development for the new console. There were several big names dropped throughout the showcase, including Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsport, and Fable. Even more impressive, however, is the fact that all of these games will be available through Xbox Game Pass on both Xbox Series X and PC.
Xbox Game Pass is something of a wild card heading into the next generation. Perhaps born out of the fact that Xbox One played second fiddle to PlayStation 4 in terms of sales throughout the current generation, or perhaps the product of some divination when it comes to where the industry is headed, Xbox Game Pass was rolled out in 2023 as something of an all-you-can eat subscription for Xbox One owners (and later, PC players).
Not every Xbox One game is on Game Pass, and not every Xbox Series X game will be on the service either. Microsoft has, however, committed to putting all of its first-party games on Xbox Game Pass, which could be a big deal for people who plan to buy an Xbox Series X. More importantly, Xbox Game Pass could sway those who are on the fence and trying to decide between buying an Xbox Series X or a PlayStation 5.
— Xbox Game Pass (@XboxGamePass) July 23, 2023
Think about it: if someone is primarily making their console buying decision based on the exclusives, they stand to save a lot of money by going with Microsoft’s console instead of Sony’s. On the PlayStation 5, those exclusive games will cost at least $60 a pop (but there’s evidence that game prices might be going up with new hardware). Game Pass, on the other hand, costs $10 a month – if you play more than two $60 games a year using Game Pass, you’re technically saving money over buying those games outright.
Considering that there are now 14 companies under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, it seems safe to assume that Microsoft will be releasing more than just a couple first-party games each year. For someone who’s interested in the games Microsoft revealed today, Xbox Game Pass can make an Xbox Series X buy look a lot more attractive.
Sony, by comparison, doesn’t really have an answer to Xbox Game Pass. It has PlayStation Now, but the hook there is game streaming and not necessarily acting as a “Netflix but for games” type of service. I think PlayStation Now is a good service – especially after it cut prices last year – but it doesn’t compete with Xbox Game Pass in terms of getting new games up quickly, let alone on the day they release.
We’re just talking about the first-party games here, too. There’s also the fact that Xbox Game Pass has been and will be home to a number of big third-party titles, with Bungie even confirming today that Destiny 2 and all of its expansions will be available through Game Pass on Xbox Series X. The more third-party developers Microsoft can woo with its Game Pass pitch, the easier it will be for gamers to justify dropping $10 a month on it.
Granted, Xbox Game Pass may not be the difference maker I think it’s capable of being in the next generation. Since Microsoft is offering Game Pass on PC as well – and has committed to bringing first-party game to PC on the same day they launch on Xbox – that could stop some from buying an Xbox Series X at launch.
That’s the position I’m in at the moment. Since I already have a capable gaming rig, there’s no real reason for me to buy an Xbox Series X next generation; I love the Fable series and I’m excited to see it come back, and Halo Infinite looks great, but I also won’t need to buy an Xbox Series X to play them because they’ll be coming to PC.
It isn’t hard to believe that there are a fair few gamers out there who are in my position and would have bought an Xbox Series X at some point in the next generation were it not for the fact that all of these games are coming to PC.
Then there’s also the fact that you never truly own the games you’re playing when you’re using Xbox Game Pass. That might not be a big deal when it comes to first-party titles from Microsoft because they’ll presumably always be available on the service, but third-party games regularly rotate in and out of the Game Pass lineup.
That, by extension, means that a game might rotate out of the lineup before you’re finished playing it. Or, say you do finish it but months or years down the line you get the urge to revisit it only to find that it’s no longer available through Game Pass. In both cases, you’re stuck buying the game anyway if you want continued access to it, though it is worth pointing out that Game Pass subscribers get a discount on the game if they buy it while it’s available through Game Pass.
So, Game Pass isn’t perfect, but to someone who is about to drop hundreds of dollars on a new console, it could be enough to sway their their decision on which platform to get, especially if they don’t have any feelings of brand loyalty as we jump into the next generation. If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see if Game Pass has a quantifiable effect on console and game sales in the next generation, but at the very least, I expect it to be a popular subscription among Xbox Series X owners.

The Future Of Dishwashing Could Be Hot, Steamy, And Sustainable
There’s a heated debate about the most environmentally-friendly way to wash dishes—traditional hand-washing or using the dishwasher. Both methods have pros and cons and often boils down to each individual’s preference when it comes to doing the household chore. However, a 2023 study published in Environmental Research Communications found that using a dishwasher is more efficient and eco-friendly than traditional hand-washing techniques most of the time.
There are several ways to make both dishwashing methods more efficient and environmentally friendly, like avoiding leaving the water running as you clean or skipping the heated dry option in the dishwasher (which may reduce water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions). New research shows that an even more environmentally friendly option may be available.
[Related: Save money by making your own dishwasher tablets.]
According to a new Physics of Fluids study, washing dishes with a superheated steam dishwasher can save water and electricity compared to conventional dishwashers that require long cycle times. It also does away with chemical cleaning agents like dishwashing detergents which may pollute water sources. Lastly, a superheated steam dishwasher may eliminate pathogens more efficiently, including heat-resistant, potentially harmful bacteria.
“We have developed a computational model to predict the turbulent flow and heat transfer of the steam in the dishwasher,” says Natalie Germann, study author and professor of fluid mechanics at the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany. Using the model, Germann and her co-authors discovered how superheated steam from a nozzle at a high velocity can create shock waves that clean a plate. When the plate reaches 180 degrees Celsius, the heat may inactivate bacteria on the surface within 25 seconds.
The authors determined the strength and position of the shocks, the flow pattern of the steam jet, and the condensation rate that can effectively disinfect dishes. However, this study is just the first of many, and you can’t just grab one of these the next time you’re looking for an upgrade in your kitchen. The single-item model is still in its beginning stages, and more research is needed to see how effective superheated steam is in cleaning plenty of dishes simultaneously.
“We will also expand our investigation from a simple dishwasher prototype with one nozzle to multiple nozzles and multiple plates,” says Germann. “Our upcoming simulations will show that the steam needs much more time to reach all places in a completely filled dishwasher and clean the dishes.”
Since the current study only focused on developing the computational framework and seeing how superheated steam can inactivate bacteria, its ability to remove food debris stuck on the plate has yet to be verified in future research by including food residues in their simulations. Still, the authors believe that steam can easily remove food layers from containers.

Further research into the capabilities of a superheated steam dishwasher may be worth exploring. “Since dishwashers are initially more expensive to purchase, it’s important for consumers to know that this will pay off over time through increased dishwasher efficiency,” says Germann. “In addition, sustainability is a big issue these days, and new technologies that help conserve limited resources like water and energy are in high demand.”
For now, you can stick to traditional hand-washing and conventional dishwashers. Still, the future may hold an eco-friendlier, steamier, and futuristic way to clean up after dinner.
How A Nasa Open Source Startup Could Change The It Universe
Tang and velcro aren’t the only things that NASA helped to invent that are part of our modern world. NASA has also played a pivotal role in the emergence of cloud technology that could reshape the vast IT world here on Earth.
Chris Kemp, the first CTO of IT at NASA, helped to lead an effort at the U.S. space agency to create a cloud compute platform. The original 9,000 lines of code, known as Nova, have become the cornerstone of the OpenStack cloud project. OpenStack now has the backing of major IT vendors, including IBM, Dell, HP, Cisco, AT&T and Intel. Kemp left NASA in 2011 and is currently the CEO of Nebula, a startup that is set to deliver commercially supported OpenStack gear.
In an exclusive interview with InternetNews Kemp explained how the open source cloud effort came to be and how NASA is already reaping the rewards.
Inspired by GoogleWhen Kemp started at NASA back in 2006, he helped to lead the partnership with Google. It’s an experience that shaped his thinking about the availability of compute resources.
“It was through working with Google that I came to realize how much of a force multiplier it was to give every one of your employees access to infinite compute and storage resources,” Kemp said. “That’s really what the people that work at Google feel that they’ve got.”
In contrast, at the same time NASA engineers were somewhat budget restrained in terms of compute resources. So Kemp wanted to see what would happen if those engineers were given access to a large pool of compute and storage infrastructure.
“Incredible things happened,” Kemp said.
Kemp and his team at NASA then replicated the system so it was in use by hundreds of groups. It even caught the eye of the White House.
Startup CEO“I’ve always been in a founder, CEO role,” Kemp said. “When I was at NASA I always viewed my role there as an entrepreneur and I viewed my team as a startup team.”
Kemp motivated his team of NASA engineers the same way that he would a team at a startup company. He tried to find people from across the organization and motivate them by giving them something important to do. He worked to make sure they were aware that their contributions mattered.
In taking the NASA cloud computing project forward into the open source world as part of OpenStack, Kemp realized that even more could be done. NASA partnered with Rackspace in July 2010, to form the OpenStack project.
“With NASA we had the opportunity to inspire a community,” Kemp said. “A lot of OpenStack’s success has to do with people that deep down inside were inspired by the space program and wanted to contribute code to a project that they knew would help NASA to explore the solar system.”
NASA’s Most Successful ProjectToday OpenStack is the backbone of cloud offerings from Cisco, Dell, HP and many others in the emerging cloud market. The project has become so successful, in fact, that NASA no longer needs to be actively involved.
NASA continued to make code contributions as part of the OpenStack effort, until fairly recently.
“NASA spends billions of dollars trying to commercialize technology, it tries to take all of the money we invest in the space program and translate it into value for the average American,” Kemp said. “OpenStack could possibly be one of the most successful spinoffs in the history of NASA.”
OpenStack’s destiny is to reshape the $3 trillion IT market, enabling a whole new era of companies to innovate and empower people. The success of OpenStack has already benefited NASA: instead of having to fund development, NASA can now simply just buy OpenStack services.
“The Nova/Nebula team had gotten this thing so far, so quickly that it (NASA) can now buy it from Dell or HP or a whole host of companies,” Kemp said. “NASA didn’t need to be in this role of incubator anymore, it could do what it normally does, which is to procure the technology from the commercial ecosystem.”
In Kemp’s view, NASA did the right thing by stepping back from the project and letting the private sector step in with OpenStack.
“Mission accomplished.”
