PayPal is, undoubtedly, the biggest and most used online payment processing platform. It is owned by eBay since 2002 and has around 140 million registered users. This service has truly pioneered and marked a revolution in the world of online payments, but with all the growth in terms of users, the quality of the service eventually declined. Additionally, a service with such dimension becomes the main target for hack and scam attempts.

Luckily, PayPal is not the only service in town. There are several alternatives, some of which are on-par with or even better than PayPal.

One of these services is Skrill, formerly known as Moneybookers. It has been in operation since 2002 and is now widely available in all continents. Last year the company acquired paysafecard, a widely-used online payment method.

Registration and Availability

Skrill is used by 36 million customers and 156,000 merchants. It is available in about 200 countries (almost all countries in the world, except Afghanistan, North Korea, Nigeria, Cuba, Myanmar, Sudan and Iran), which is more than the PayPal network’s availability. Skrill supports 40 currencies while also offering local payments for businesses with more than 100 at the moment. Given the small amount of merchants using its services, Skrill is more focused on the transactions between users. Some of the most popular merchants accepting Skrill are eBay, oDesk, Skype, bet365, instaforex and WilliamHill.

The registration is entirely free. The website was recently redesigned as part of the transition from Moneybookers to Skrill, and the new interface is very user-friendly with several tutorials explaining all the steps being provided. Skrill also provides something called the VIP Club, offering special benefits to users subscribing to it.

Deposit, Withdrawal and Limits

For both deposits and withdrawals the usual methods are available – such as bank-related mechanisms (bank transfer and similar) and all the major payment schemes including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB.

Right after you open your account it will be considered “unverified,” meaning you will need to provide additional information. In that state your account will be more limited: 2500€ for overall transactions and 1000€ for a single one. In terms of credit card usage, deposits are limited to 1000€ and withdrawals to 150€ (those values vary according to each currency).

Fees

Regardless of the currency you use, Skrill always charges you one percent of the money you send until a determined cap – for example, in US dollars, the cap is $10. Receiving money, on the other hand, is absolutely free of charge (in PayPal it works the other way around).

In terms of depositing and withdrawing money from your Skrill account, it varies according to the method and the currency. Depositing through your bank is free but withdrawing is not. This innovative service aims to make online payments easier. It is optimized for smartphones, tablets and desktops and allows merchants to be paid in a simple way: When purchasing for the first time, users input their payment details and the process goes as usual. However, future purchases use those details in order to provide the simplest purchase possible. This may not sound secure, but Skrill operations are heavily protected with several encryption and security protocols.

Conclusion

PayPal still dominates the market of online payments, being the most widely used method both in terms of user transfer and merchant payment methods. On the other hand, as mentioned above, this dimension also presents some risks for users as it makes PayPal the first target of attacks and other types of scams.

Skrill is not as big as PayPal, but in terms of the reliability of the service, it is not far behind its competitor. The move from Moneybookers to Skrill and the recent inclusion of paysafecard were huge steps for this brand, giving it a steady place in the market. It is by far the best PayPal alternative, and it deserves the attention of everyone looking for a way out of PayPal.

Console 2: A Great Windows Command Prompt Alternative

Windows command line utility, known as CMD or Command Prompt, is one of the most powerful tools that Microsoft offers to the Windows users. However, it is also one of the creepiest and not-so user friendly command line utilities you can find. You can’t even resize the command prompt window or change the fonts as per your requirements. If you have ever used a Linux or Unix command line utility (Terminal), you will know how useful it is to have a customizable command line utility.

Luckily, there are plenty of third party Windows command prompt alternatives and Console 2 is one of the best.

Console 2 – A Command Prompt Replacement

Console 2 is a free and highly recommended command prompt alternative for Windows with a whole lot of features and eye-candy. To start using it, just download Console 2 from its official website. There is installation required. Simply extract the zip file to your C drive and you are good to go.

With this change, you can start using Powershell by selecting Powershell from the “New Tab” dropdown menu. Along with Powershell, you can also integrate other shells like Cygwin, Git Bash, Visual Studio CDM, etc.., so that you will have a consistent user interface.

Another handy feature is the keyboard shortcuts. They are found under the “Hotkeys” section in Console 2 settings, and you can easily change them to your liking.

Here you will see a host of tweaks where you can change the type of font, Windows smoothing, window position, docking, custom window titles, etc.

If you want to set transparency to your command screen, you can do so by navigating to the “More” section under “Appearance.”

Conclusion

Console 2 delivers the same functionality as the regular Windows command prompt but does the task in a more appealing way. It adds several missing features in the Windows command prompt. If you are a regular Command Prompt user, do give Console 2 a try and see what you think.

About this OnePlus 9 Pro review: I tested the OnePlus 9 Pro over a period of one week. It was running Android 11 on the February 2023 security patch with OxygenOS 11.2 at the time of review and has since been updated to the January 2023 security patch with Android 12 and OxygenOS 12. The review unit was provided by OnePlus for the purposes of this review.

I’ve generally been a fan of OnePlus’ minimalist design ethos, though I feel like the company lost its way in recent years. The OnePlus 3, 5, and 6 series were simple and cohesive, but the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 8 families were a bit too much for my tastes. The 9 Pro sees OnePlus returning to its roots in the best way possible.

The frame itself is 2.2mm thick along the side rails and it widens to nearly the full 8.7mm thickness at the top and bottom ends. Silky smooth glass means the OnePlus 9 Pro is crazy slippery. I strongly suggest you use a case to protect the phone. OnePlus has its own selection of excellent first-party cases, but there are plenty of other options too.

The Morning Mist colorway I have is gorgeous. It transitions from near black at the bottom edge to near white at the top edge with a mirrored finish that rivals the stunning OPPO Find X3 Pro‘s good looks. I really like it. Thank goodness OnePlus kept the camera module design in check. The module is still sizable, but it doesn’t jut out from the rear glass as much as, say, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra camera modules do. Moreover, the lens arrangement is tasteful and simple in just the right ways.

The OnePlus 9 Pro’s design sees the brand returning to its roots in the best way possible.

OnePlus carried over many of the phone’s other design elements from previous generations. For example, the alert slider is present and accounted for. This switch makes it easy to adjust from silent to vibrate to ringer on. The screen lock/power button is just below the switch on the right edge of the phone. You’ll find the volume toggle gracing the left edge. Both these buttons have excellent travel and feedback. A USB-C port is centered on the bottom edge and is flanked by the SIM card tray on the left and the downward-firing speaker on the right. There’s no expandable storage and no headphone jack.

OnePlus made sure the 9 Pro has all the power you need no matter how you intend to use the phone. Whether you’re a social media maven, a YouTube fanatic, or a gaming guru, the OnePlus 9 Pro delivers the goods.

With a Snapdragon 888 processor on board, and either 8GB or 12GB of RAM, you’re set to handle everything and anything your daily use could throw at it. Even with the screen performance maxed out, the phone sailed through everyday tasks with ease. I didn’t encounter any stuttering or lagging. Multitasking didn’t drag on performance, nor did some heavy-duty streaming. The OnePlus 9 Pro performed like a champion day in and day out. The OnePlus 10 Pro packs the newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship processor, which promises some speed, efficiency, and graphics improvements in the newer phone.

The 9 Pro handled benchmarks as expected. In most instances, the 9 Pro was on par with any other Snapdragon 888-powered flagship. Some phones with the Snapdragon 888 Plus outrun it, but not by much. We ran our custom Speed Test G benchmark and the 9 Pro scored well on the timed test at one minute 15 seconds. To put that in perspective, the Xiaomi Mi 11 nabbed 1:12 and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra took 1:21. The OnePlus 9 Pro lands right where it should.

How does that translate to gaming? The phone has some gaming-centric tech built in to appease mobile players. Cool Play is OnePlus’ heat management system. The 9 Pro has an enlarged vapor chamber, thicker graphite sheets, and a larger copper foil to help keep the temperature down during gameplay. Then there’s Pro Gaming Mode, which blocks notifications from apps, calls, and other distractions so you can play uninterrupted. I tested Asphalt 9 and tried my hand at Fortnite (which I really suck at) and came away impressed with the performance. Frame rates were excellent, the action was smooth, and the responsiveness of the phone was top-notch. The OnePlus 9 Pro can hang with even the best gaming phones out there.

Then there’s the 5G story, which is a bit more mixed. The 9 Pro shipped with more 5G bands than nearly any other phone in the market at the time of launch. That may be true, but its support for 5G in North America is uneven. In the US, the OnePlus 9 Pro has the bands in place to deliver the fastest mmWave 5G speeds, but only if you’re on T-Mobile or Verizon. As far as AT&T is concerned, “AT&T users will only have 4G LTE service for unlocked versions” of the phone. That’s a major bummer.

The OnePlus 9 Pro’s camera is all about the Hasselblad partnership. There’s no question OnePlus is using both the Hasselblad name and the software to up its own photography game. Does that make the 9 Pro a winner?

OnePlus went extra wide with the ultrawide lens, which relies on a Sony IMX766 sensor, mirroring the OPPO Find X3 Pro. This 50MP camera puts a freeform lens to use with what OnePlus called a “series of unique curves” to straighten out incoming light. The result? Ultrawide shots that are 99% free of edge distortion. OnePlus wasn’t lying. The ultrawide shots I took were generally free of the distorted look that’s common to wide-angle photos. I kind of like the distortion of ultrawide cameras sometimes, but there’s no denying how impressive the results were here. More importantly, the color did a good job matching that of the main sensor, even if it’s not 100% perfect.

Thank goodness OnePlus got with the program and decided to offer a competitive telephoto lens in the 9 Pro’s camera system. It’s no periscope-aided beast, but at least it handles basic 3.3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. I wish it captured more than 8MP, but the 3.3x optical zoom performance is quite good. The 30x zoom, meanwhile, is near worthless, but that’s hardly a surprise. The OnePlus 9 Pro also has a 2MP monochrome camera to enhance black and white photos shot from the main shooter.

As for portrait mode, you can see from the two samples below that there’s solid separation between the subject and the background. I especially like the softer effect in the second photo.

The 16MP selfie camera does a fair job. In the standard selfie below I am in sharp focus and there’s plenty of detail still visible in the background. However, the portrait selfie creates far too much blur in the background and it can’t be adjusted from the portrait mode. You can hardly tell that there’s a city behind me. At least edge detection is good and I’m not missing and more hair than I already am.

On the video front, the 9 Pro can capture video up to 8K at 30fps and 4K at up to 120fps, with various other frame rates and resolutions available for slow-motion, hyper-lapse, and standard video. The video I shot looked really good on my 4K monitor. Everything about the footage was clean, accurate in terms of color, with sharp focus and proper white balance. I was very pleased overall.

The OnePlus 9 Pro camera outperforms all of its predecessors.

OnePlus has done a fine job in closing the gap with its competitors. Its cameras have traditionally fallen well short of its marketing claims. The 9 Pro outperforms all its predecessors but is still not without faults. The biggest detractors are iffy HDR performance and some over-sharpening. These don’t ruin the experience, but competing phones do better. Now that we’re into 2023, the list of cameras that outperform the OnePlus 9 Pro has grown, including the Google Pixel 6 Pro, Apple iPhone 13 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S22 family. We’ve yet to test the camera of the OnePlus 10 Pro, but will do so as soon as the global version launches.

The camera app is mostly carried over from the existing Oxygen OS 11 app that’s already available to other OnePlus phones. Astute observers will note that the shutter button is Hasselblad orange, rather than the typical white. The other big addition is the Pro Mode, which was designed with Hasselblad and offers knowledgeable users direct access to tools such as the shutter speed, aperture, brightness, and so on. This is how you capture the 12-bit RAW photos if you want them.

OnePlus’ user interface skin, OxygenOS, is usually a fan favorite. The company’s philosophy is to create smooth, fast experiences with its software. Though not everyone is enamored with the Android 11-based OxygenOS 11, I found it was a fine platform for the device at launch. Some users didn’t like the change in core system fonts from Roboto to OnePlus Sans, for example, as well as the UI’s revamped use of white space. For a longtime OnePlus user, I suppose these changes could be jarring. If you’re coming from a OnePlus 8, chances are you’re already using Android 11 anyway.

Things I dig include the always-on display, the clean look, the simple touches, and the raw speed. You can customize nearly everything about the user interface in a way that suits you. There’s practically no bloatware at all save for Netflix, which you cannot delete, only disable.

OnePlus 9 Pro specs

OnePlus has crafted a classic. The OnePlus 9 Pro is its best smartphone in years.

Battery life is among several things that hold the phone back. Some might also be unhappy about the missing microSD card, but 256GB should be enough storage for most people. Then there’s 5G. While plenty of 5G bands are on board, its lack of support for AT&T 5G in the US is a significant blow for potential buyers not on Verizon and T-Mobile.

Even with these flaws, there’s no doubt that OnePlus crafted a classic. The OnePlus 9 Pro is its best effort in years and one wholly worth considering.

Nearly 400 students volunteered in this year’s BU Community Service Center Alternative Spring Breaks program. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, ASB paired students with 37 organizations around the country involved in environmental, affordable housing and homelessness, children’s services, and animal welfare efforts. All week long, we are bringing you first-person accounts of some of those trips.

After five and a half months of planning, office hours, posting YouTube videos, and blogging, the moment we’d so eagerly anticipated had arrived: it was 5:45 a.m. March 10, and we were standing in the Fuller parking lot waiting for our ASB volunteers and the two vans that would take us to Hobe Sound, Fla. Moments later, everyone was on board, and we had begun our 30-hour drive to Jupiter Island, where we’d spend the next week assisting the Nature Conservancy restoring the habitats at the barrier island sanctuary Blowing Rocks Preserve.

The first leg of our trip proved quiet: everyone was either catching up on sleep or silently wondering why they had willingly agreed to share a van with complete strangers, overpacked duffel bags, tents, and a bad case of stinky feet that would turn out to haunt us for the rest of the week. It was during our first pit stop at a New Jersey gas station that our group started to lose its inhibitions. While people milled around stretching their legs, we suggested a game of Ninja, and within minutes we were in a circle, embarked on a loud and aggressive game.

After driving more than 1,400 miles, we finally made it to our campground in Stuart, Fla., Sunday afternoon, in the midst of a torrential downpour. Disappointment could be seen in every face: dreams of a week of sun and warmth had been replaced by the necessity of having to set up two giant tents in a muddy field. Sporting our newly acquired stylish Wal-Mart ponchos and singing “Call Me Maybe,” we quickly set up camp and cooked our first dinner while the storm played out. Before bed, we checked the forecast one more time. It called for rain and cloudy weather for the remainder of the week—not exactly the start we had been hoping for.

By Monday morning, the rain had finally subsided and after a hurried breakfast we made the 20-minute drive to Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island, about 25 miles north of West Palm Beach.

Blowing Rocks Preserve is considered one of the Nature Conservancy’s greatest success stories. The 73-acre preserve has become a sanctuary for native species and habitats that are rapidly disappearing from other Florida islands. Since 1985, the Conservancy has completed a major wetlands restoration, as well as beachside restoration and the replacement of invasive nonnative species of plants with native plants, most grown on-site with seed collected from the preserve. Three species of sea turtles—loggerhead, green, and leatherback—return to nest on the north beach.

During our week at Blowing Rocks, we worked closely with Mike Renda, Conservancy conservation program manager, and his intern Kate to transform a barren and underdeveloped area of the sanctuary with new plantings. The first day, our stronger volunteers were recruited to use a machine called an auger to drill holes in the soil so others could then plant various species of native trees and other vegetation. We even stayed late that day to install an irrigation system, which was one of the highlights of our trip. The project required major teamwork: we worked in pairs to stab holes into the pipelines, causing water to spray frantically into our faces, soaking us as we inserted irrigation emitters. We didn’t care. By the end of that first day, we could already see the impact we’d made on the land.

For the rest of the week, we woke our volunteers each morning at 6:30 by blaring what we designated as our anthems—“Call Me Maybe,” “Princess of China,” and “We Found Love”—from the van’s speakers. Although tired and groggy, our group loved the chance to watch the sunrise during breakfast. We then headed to the preserve, where we mulched the trees we had planted, set up a culvert in a swampy pond (requiring some of the volunteers to wear “poop boots”), and weeded spartina grass. We finished up the week lopping vegetation for trails, removing weeds, and doing general cleanup.

Of course, when we weren’t volunteering at Blowing Rocks, we found time to enjoy the beach—actually, several beaches. We had our pick of local Hobe Sound beaches as well as West Palm Beach and Stuart Beach. There is no better feeling than arriving at the beach after a long day of physical labor and immediately sprinting into the ocean and tumbling into the waves. The sun was glorious, despite the initial forecast, and our winter skin quickly tanned or sunburned.

We also used our free time to visit some local tourist spots, including the sea turtle hospital at Loggerhead Marine Life Center in Juno Beach. We explored the museum and hospital and saw all types of sea turtles recovering from various ailments, including shark attacks and malnutrition. We visited downtown Stuart on our last night, where we walked around the welcoming downtown and enjoyed ice cream before starting a flash mob dance party in the middle of a gas station.

Every night we returned to camp after a long day, exhausted and slightly more sunburned, but we’d immediately start dinner and get a campfire going as the sun started to set. There were nights we ate better than others, and times when our campfire was less successful than we had hoped, but we always got together to play Mafia, roast s’mores, and exchange homemade presents we’d found in nature. As the campfire died down and volunteers returned to their tents, some of us would stay up an extra hour just to lie back and gaze at the stars.
