Suggested January 2024 Schiller On App Discovery, Passbook Not Being A Direct Payment Product

Phil Schiller, senior vice president of all marketing at Apple, talked to The Wall Street Journal yesterday about the app ecosystem, how the upcoming iOS 6 mobile operating system helps third-party developers get better exposure for their software and why Apple’s brand new app called Passbook is not meant to become a full-blown mobile payment solution…

Schiller talked to Jessica E. Vascellaro, the author of the Wall Street Journal article, about Apple’s efforts to help developers profit more from making apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

As rumored, Apple’s content stores in iOS 6 have been remodeled with social integration and easier app discover in mind (here’s Jeff’s video demonstration).

Schiller argues Apple’s done a “tremendous amount” to help users discover great software on the App Store:

“The opportunity is the best it has ever been for software developers,” Mr. Schiller said, adding that he thinks the app store is a far more democratic way to sell software than traditional retail stores with limited shelf space.

Apple recently introduced Free App of the Week (akin to Amazon’s Appstore for Android) and Editor’s Choice promos to boost sales of big hit apps. But Apple’s Mr. No is adamant that the charts are not quintessential to app discovery.

Every other day you hear about another app going off the charts. You can still get discovered and get a hit overnight.

And on Apple’s new Passbook app, seen below, Schiller said that “for now” Apple has no plans to make it a direct payment product.

Mr. Schiller said the company is steering clear of making it a more direct payment product, for now. He said so-called digital wallet mobile-payment services are “all fighting over their piece of the pie, and we aren’t doing that.

And “Mr. Schiller”, the steward of Apple’s relations with developers, also touched upon a new set of tracking tools that won’t require UDIDs.

Apple has also introduced new tools for app developers to gather data from repeat users that is more limited than an earlier tool it said it would phase out amid privacy concerns.

According to 9to5Mac‘s Mark Gurman, who pretty much leaked all of Apple’s cards for WWDC 2012, “while Apple plans to use the Chomp technology across their three digital stores, the implementation will not be ready in time for the iOS 6 launch”.

He also claimed “Apple is still planning to roll out complementary store redesigns for computers later this year”.

I still think Apple needs to do lots more to improve content discovery in its digital stores. On top of that, Google’s Play Store is catching up, recently passing the 500,000 app milestone versus 650,000 apps on the App Store.

And while devs still write for iOS first, we’ve seen some notable iPhone exclusives deflecting to Android, like Instagram, Path and Instapaper (though our readers don’t care).

If I were Apple, I wouldn’t put my faith in that Flurry research, which says roughly seven of every ten apps developed are for Apple’s iOS – things change fast in the mobile space.

Right now, app stores are a mess. Their layout and navigation logic discourage discovery outside specific searches and charts.

A better solution is clearly needed and Apple better do something about it and do it fast.

Perhaps Siri will come to the rescue?

Instagram is arguably the largest social media platform for photo sharing. The problem with it is that’s mostly oriented on mobile users and PC alternatives are rather underwhelming.

Especially the UWP version for Windows 10 which, since it was introduced, shows a lot of signs of bad optimization.

To make things even worse,  the Windows 10 Instagram app is not working at all for some users. So, we provided you with a few troubleshooting tips below.

If the Instagram app isn’t working for you, feel free to check them out.

How can I get the Instagram app working on Windows 10? 1. Run the troubleshooter

Let’s start by employing the built-in Windows Store apps troubleshooter. The tool should check for the integration issues and possibly resolve them.

However, don’t hold your hopes high, as the Instagram app has had a bad spell since its introduction to Windows 10.

On the other hand, it won’t cost you to give it a try and look for yourself. Follow the above steps to run the troubleshooter.

2. Reinstall the app

If the previous step fell short, let’s give the reinstallation a try. Reinstalling Instagram doesn’t have any drawbacks and can certainly help if issues emerge.

We can’t say with certainty whether the current version of the Instagram app is the problem or it’s an issue that is permanently present in the app.

It can seemingly depend on the Windows 10 version you’re currently using, so make sure you keep your system up to date.

Also, do note that you can remove Instagram completely from your PC by using a quick uninstaller software.

If you want to entirely uninstall the app from your PC without letting any leftovers, it’s a good idea to look for the best uninstaller software on Windows 10.

3. Reset the Instagram app to factory values

Another viable option is resetting the app to default values and starting from scratch. This action will erase all cached data and allow you a clean slate to start with.

There might be a bug at hand and this should address it. You’ll need to sign in again, but that’s not exactly a great effort to start with.

Even more, since we’re talking about an online service, you won’t lose anything in the process. Use the above steps to reset the Instagram app to factory values.

4. Try an alternative

Finally, there’s an alternative you can try in order to use the app in your PC web browser. Now, we’re aware that the web-based application is fairly limiting in comparison to Android/iOS apps.

But, there’s a way to simulate a smartphone or tablet in your web browser and thus obtain the full functionality of the mobile app on your PC.

It can be done in every browser, including Edge. The only thing you need is the developer options menu. Use the above steps for Chrome.

App Store Payment Platform Monopoly Ending In Korea; Other Countries Likely To Follow

Apple’s App Store payment platform monopoly is ending in South Korea after an antitrust law was passed, affecting both the iPhone maker and Google. This is expected to encourage other countries to enact similar laws.

Currently, the App Store is the only way for developers to sell iOS apps, and they are not allowed to direct users to any third-party payment platform within their apps. That will now change …

Background

We yesterday outlined the background to this.

Apple’s monopoly on the sale of iOS apps and in-app purchases is the biggest antitrust concern about the tech giant. While Apple claims that the relevant market definition is “smartphone apps,” in which it does not have a monopoly, many regulators and legislators around the world view the market definition as “iOS apps,” in which it does.

This is because it is not realistic for most developers to launch an Android app but not an iOS one. An iOS app is essential to reach a large slice of the population.

Many developers would like the option to bypass Apple as a payment platform, and an increasing number of governments seem sympathetic to this.

Apple’s view remains that it created the market for iOS apps, and is entitled to be rewarded for this, and for the opportunity it offers to developers. The company did make a massive U-turn when it cut its commission from 30% to 15% for the vast majority of developers, but has so far stuck to its guns when it comes to its anti-steering policy, offering only a tiny concession to settle a recent lawsuit.

App Store payment platform monopoly ending

It was last week reported that an amendment to South Korea’s Telecommunications Business Act would force both Apple and Google to permit the use of third-party payment platforms in their app stores. The vote was originally set to happen yesterday, but was delayed by a day due to other legislation over-running its scheduled time.

The WSJ reports that the vote has now passed.

A bill passed Tuesday by South Korea’s National Assembly is the first in the world to dent the tech giants’ dominance over how apps on their platforms sell their digital goods. It will become law once signed by President Moon Jae-in, whose party strongly endorsed the legislation.

The law amends South Korea’s Telecommunications Business Act to prevent large app-market operators from requiring the use of their in-app purchasing systems. It also bans operators from unreasonably delaying the approval of apps or deleting them from the marketplace—provisions meant to head off retaliation against app makers.

To give the act teeth, companies who fail to comply can be fined up to 3% of their South Korean revenue. To be clear, that would be 3% of all Apple’s revenue in the country, not just App Store revenue (which would obviously be an ineffective deterrent).

The Coalition for App Fairness welcomed the news.

“South Korea’s new app store law is a significant development in the global fight to bring fairness to the digital economy,” said Meghan DiMuzio, Executive Director of CAF. “We applaud South Korean lawmakers and President Moon Jae-in for setting an example for the rest of the world to hold app store gatekeepers accountable for their harmful and anti-competitive practices. The Coalition for App Fairness hopes U.S. and European lawmakers follow South Korea’s lead and continue their important work to level the playing field for all app developers and users.”

Apple said that it would put users at risk.

The Telecommunications Business Act will put users who purchase digital goods from other sources at risk of fraud, undermine their privacy protections, make it difficult to manage their purchases, and features like “Ask to Buy” and Parental Controls will become less effective. We believe user trust in App Store purchases will decrease as a result of this legislation — leading to fewer opportunities for the over 482,000 registered developers in Korea who have earned more than KRW8.55 trillion to date with Apple.

Other countries likely to follow suit

Many antitrust experts believe that South Korea will simply be the first of many to implement this type of legislation.

The law will be referenced by regulators in other places—such as the European Union and the U.S.—that also are scrutinizing global tech companies, said Yoo Byung-joon, a professor of business at Seoul National University who researches digital commerce […]

Apple and Google face lawsuits and regulatory probes in multiple countries around their requirements that apps listed on their app marketplaces use in-house payment systems that take cuts of up to 30% of in-app sales in most cases.

The European Union in December proposed the Digital Markets Act, meant to prevent large technology platforms from abusing their gatekeeper position […]

A bipartisan bill recently introduced in the U.S. Senate would restrict how the Apple and Google app stores operate and what rules can be imposed on app developers.

Additionally, the judge in the Epic Games case is expected to return a compromise ruling, with the smart money being that it will ban Apple’s anti-steering rules, which prevent developers linking to external payment options for in-app purchases and subscriptions. I’ve argued that this could actually be the best long-term outcome for Apple.

How To Fix Twitter App Not Working Or Loading On Iphone

Is Twitter not working or loading on your iPhone? Well, if this is the case, you have come to the right place to fix this issue. But before you do that, you should know that there are various reasons why Twitter stops loading. It may refuse to show tweets because the servers are under maintenance, or there is a problem with your internet connection, or you have been logged out of the app, or the Twitter app is stuck and thus refusing to load new data, etc.

So, whatever be the reasons for Twitter not working on your device, we have a list of fixes that will solve the problem you are facing. Happy tweeting…

1. Force Kill the Twitter App

Sometimes when an app does not work, does not load data or hangs, it is okay to force kill it. To force kill the Twitter app on your iPhone:

Step #1. For the iPhone without Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold. For the iPhone with Home button, quickly double press the Home button. You will see cards showing all open apps.

Now open the Twitter app again. This should fix the Twitter not loading issue.

2. Check Internet Connection

In case you are on Mobile Data and you are able to browse other websites and apps but not Twitter:

Step #1. Launch the Settings app and tap on Mobile Data/Cellular.

Step #2. Scroll down and see that the toggle next to Twitter is ON (that is, it shows green).

You may also turn Wi-Fi OFF and then back ON. If your phone has issues related to network settings, see #9 mentioned below.

3. Restart your iPhone

Restarting your iPhone is an easy way to fix many small issues. It is recommended that you do so at least once every week. If your Twitter app is not working, restart your iPhone and relaunch the Twitter app.

App updates introduce new features as well as fix existing bugs and issues. To update the Twitter app on your iPhone:

Step #1. Touch and hold the App Store icon. Now tap on Updates.

Step #2. If there is a pending update for the Twitter app, tap on UPDATE next to it.

5. Uninstall and Re-install the Twitter App

None of the above solutions worked for you? Well, now you could try a fresh install of the Twitter app. To uninstall it, touch and hold the Twitter app icon until you see a small cross in the top left of the icon. Now tap on the cross and tap Delete.

To install the Twitter app, launch the App Store, and tap on Search. Now type ‘Twitter‘ and download the app by tapping on the little icon that looks like an arrow coming down from a cloud.

6. Restart your Wi-Fi Router

Sometimes restarting your home Wi-Fi router helps too. To restart, you can use the button on your router or use the wall plug switch to turn it OFF and then ON.

7. Try Connecting to Different Wi-Fi Network

If the problem persists, try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network and see if it helps. It has happened with me that, at times, a site like WordPress or Amazon stops to load on a particular network. After I switch network (or use a VPN on the existing network), it starts working again. You may give these solutions a go.

Apple is one of the few companies which brings regular updates and also keeps publishing new software updates for iDevices. You should make use of it. To see if your iPhone has a pending software update launch the Settings app and tap on General ⟶ Software Update. If you see an update available, tap on Download and Install.

9. Reset Network Settings

Resetting the network settings will also erase your Wi-Fi passwords, Location settings, Bluetooth devices, VPN settings, etc. But it won’t delete any of your data.

To reset network settings:

Step #1. Launch the Settings app and tap on General ⟶ Reset.

Step #2. Next, tap on Reset Network Settings ⟶ Enter the password. Now tap on Reset Network Settings to confirm. After this, the network reset process will begin.

10. Check for Twitter Server Working Status

It has happened multiple times with many users that everything from their end, like the network connection, the iPhone, other settings are correct or work perfectly. However, the Twitter servers are down or under maintenance, or not responding. To check this, you may search for something like ‘Is Twitter Down‘ or ‘Twitter Server Status‘ and see if other people are also facing a similar issue.

When many people are not able to use Twitter, this might equate to the Twitter server(s) being under maintenance. Usually, it is fixed within a few minutes to a few hours. If this is the case, you will have to wait. You may try using Twitter after some time.

Summing up…

Regrettably, free VPN tools rarely work with Netflix. That’s because the company is always looking for ways to ban VPN traffic, and it’s easy to do so when the IP addresses of free VPN services are public. And it can become really frustrating to keep getting Netflix errors with VPN.

But Private Internet Access is different because it’s a paid VPN service. It means that it’s being maintained by a team of professionals that frequently fix the IP addresses which fail with Netflix.
