7 Free Ways To Compress Images On Mac

As cameras and screen resolutions increase, the photos and screenshots you take can run into several MBs. The large file means it occupies more space (on Mac, iCloud, SSD) and takes longer to send via Slack, email, etc. One way to address this is by reducing image file size on Mac.

Compressing and decreasing the photo size certainly lowers the picture quality a bit. But in most cases, you won’t notice much difference. Here are seven quick and free ways to compress photos on Mac one at a time or several in batch/bulk.

Factors on which the image file size depends

The file size of a photo depends on various things like:

Image dimensions: A 1920 x 1080 image will have a bigger file size than a 720 x 480 image.

Image format: For most pictures, JPG/JPEG tends to have a smaller file size than PNG. But if your image is mainly text-based, PNG is better.

Image content and color depth: If there are many black portions in the image instead of white, it can have a smaller file size.

Camera type: Pictures taken by the front iPhone camera or the MacBook’s webcam will almost always have a smaller file size than the primary camera, which runs into several megapixels.

Flash: If you use flash while shooting pictures, this will result in an image with increased file size.

Screen resolution: The screenshot file size of my new retina 13-inch MacBook Pro is far more than that of my non-retina 13-inch MacBook Pro. This is because the sharper screen has more pixels and image dimensions, resulting in bigger screenshots.

Now that you know the basics about image file size, here are some quick ways to convert large images on Mac to smaller sizes.

1. Reduce image file size by changing their format

I take dozens of screenshots on iPhone and Mac every day for my articles. By default, Apple devices take and save screenshots in PNG format.

If the screenshot only has text (like that of the iPhone Settings app), I almost always keep it in PNG format.

But if the image has graphics (like the screenshot of Home Screen with app icons), I convert it to JPG in 99.9% of cases. JPG offers almost the same picture quality as PNG but significantly reduces file size. Sometimes the file size reduction is up to 98%!

In the steps below, you will see how to change the image format. If you already know how to convert images from one format to another, you may also use those methods.

And if you take lots of screenshots, you can use an easy Terminal command to change Mac’s screenshot format to reduce size.

2. Compress file size by resizing image

If you have a huge image of width and height like 4000px and 2800px, it likely runs into several megabytes. To address this, you can resize and reduce the dimensions to something like 2000px into 1400px. This will lower the file size. You can see the image dimensions by selecting it and pressing Command + I. To make the image file size even smaller, compress the resized image.

Here’s how you can use the handy quick actions menu to compress images on Mac running macOS Monterey and later:

3) JPEG format is suitable unless you wish to change it. Checked “Preserve metadata” means you want to keep the photo details like date, time, location, etc. You can uncheck that if desired.

4. Use Preview on Mac to compress pictures

Preview offers the tools to reduce image file size. You can work with one or multiple images and decrease their file size.

Compress one image

Here’s how you can use the Preview app on any macOS version to compress one image:

3) Choose the format. HEIC isn’t compatible everywhere but offers a significantly smaller file size. You may also choose JPEG or others as needed.

4) Drag the quality slider to lower it.

Tip: After compressing the image, if you feel the quality is unusable, follow the same steps with the original image and go easy on the quality slider.

Compress images in bulk/batch

Here’s how you can use the Preview app on any macOS version to compress several images together:

1) Select multiple images in the Finder folder by holding the Command key or pressing Command + A to select all.

3) Press Command + A and make sure all image thumbnails are selected in the left sidebar of the Preview app.

6) Set the format and drag the quality slider to adjust it.

How to fix “Cannot export selected items” in Mac’s Preview app?

5. Compress images using Mac’s Photos app

Like the Preview app, you can reduce image file size using the macOS Photos app. The process is similar, as evident from these steps:

1) Select one or more pictures in the Photos app.

4) Accordingly, set the Photo Kind, Quality, and Size to compress the images.

6. Use photo compression apps

The Mac App Store has several apps that let you compress images. Search for something like “compress images” in the App Store.

On my Mac, I use Compress Photos & Pictures, which is an app for iPhone and iPad developed by iDB. But since I use a MacBook with Apple Silicon, I can install this app on my Mac, and it works as flawlessly as it works on iPhone.

Once you have Compress Photos & Pictures on your Mac, the steps are effortless. You can add photos from the Photos app and save the compressed images back to the Photos app.

7. Use online sites to compress images

Finally, one more method I use daily to compress images for iDB posts is via online services.

One web search for “compress images” will list hundreds of such sites. Two that I like and have been using for many years are:

Feel free to give them a try. But you must know that here, you’re uploading the images to the site’s servers. Since I compress screenshots with non-personal or non-sensitive information, I see no harm in using these. But for compressing images of identity cards, driving licenses, personal photos, etc., I use the offline methods mentioned above.

Imessage Not Syncing On Mac? 9 Ways To Fix

Apple syncs messages from your iPhone to Mac (and vice versa) if both devices use the same Apple ID. If you don’t receive iMessages (or text messages) on your Mac, the troubleshooting solutions below should fix the issue.

Your Mac may not synchronize messages and other iCloud data over slow or unstable internet. Ensure your Mac has internet access before attempting to fix iMessage’s synchronization issues.

Table of Contents

1. Check Apple ID and iMessage Server Status

Head to the Apple System Status web page in your web browser and check the indicator next to iMessage and Apple ID.

A green indicator means both services are working correctly, while yellow or red means they’re temporarily unavailable.

Apple ID and iMessage work hand-in-hand—Apple uses your Apple ID to sync messages across your devices. Your Mac may not synchronize messages from your other devices if the iMessage or Apple ID server is down.

Apple fixes server-related issues in time, so messages from your other devices will sync to your Mac when iMessage’s back online.

2. Check Apple ID and iMessage Address

Ensure your Mac uses the same Apple ID account and iMessage address as your other devices.

, select

on the menu bar, and select

Open the iMessage settings tab and check that the Apple ID is the same one connected to your iCloud devices.

Also, ensure there’s a checkmark next to the iMessage email address or phone number.

Sign Out

if the Apple ID doesn’t match the account on your iPhone or iPad. Your Mac will sync your messages when you sign in to the same Apple ID on your other Apple devices.

3. Check Your Date and Time Settings

Apple may not sync messages to your Mac if its date and time settings don’t match your current location. Connect your Mac to the internet and set the date and time using Apple’s time server.

System Preferences

and select

Date & Time

Head to the “Date & Time” tab and select the

lock icon

in the bottom corner.

Enter your Mac’s password or use Touch ID to unlock the Date & Time preferences page.

Check the

Set date and time automatically

Select the “Time Zone” tab and check

Set time zone automatically using current location

4. Manually Sync Messages

macOS has an option to sync conversations from your iCloud devices to your Mac manually. Initiate a synchronization if your Mac doesn’t update conversations automatically. Connect your Mac to a Wi-Fi network and follow the steps below.

Open the

app, select

on the menu bar, and select

Head to the

tab and select

Sync Now

The synchronization speed depends on your internet connection speed and how many messages your Mac’s synchronizing. Wait 2-5 minutes and check if conversations in the Messages app are up-to-date.

5. Re-Enable Messages in iCloud

Reactivating the messaging service on your Mac can also fix the synchronization issue.

, select

on the menu bar, and select

Go to the

tab and uncheck

Enable Messages in iCloud

Disable This Device

on the confirmation window.

Check the

Enable Messages in iCloud

You should see a “Downloading Messages from iCloud” progress bar at the bottom of the Messages app window. The missing messages or conversations should appear on your Mac when the download is complete.

6. Enable Text Message Forwarding

If you don’t get text messages on your Mac, check that “Text Message Forward” is enabled on your iPhone.

Open your iPhone’s Settings app, tap Messages, select Text Message Forwarding, and turn on text message forwarding for your Mac.

Your devices must use the same Apple ID for text message forwarding to work. If your Mac isn’t on the message forwarding page, link your Mac to your iPhone’s Apple ID and check again.

7. Reboot Your Devices

Shutting down your computer and turning it back can fix synchronization glitches and other Mac issues. Ensure you close all applications before rebooting your Mac, so you don’t lose unsaved data

Select the Apple logo on the menu bar and select Restart on the Apple menu.

8. Disable and Enable iMessage on Your iOS Device

Re-enabling iMessage on your iPhone or iPad can restore message synchronization to your Mac.

Wait for your network carrier to activate iMessage and check if your device now syncs messages to your Mac. Learn what to do if your device gets stuck in the “Waiting for activation” phase.

9. Update Your Devices

Apple often releases iOS and macOS updates introducing new features and fixing issues with Apple apps and services. Update your devices’ operating system to the latest version and check if messages now sync to your Mac.

Your iPhone Could Be the Culprit

If the problem persists, your iPhone or iPad is probably not uploading/syncing your messages to iCloud. Get iMessage working correctly on your iPhone and Apple will sync messages across your devices without issues.

4 Ways To Resize Images On Mac (Including Batch)

Home » Tips » How to Resize an Image on Mac

You can resize an image on your Mac using Preview, the Photos app, the Pages app, and various other applications.

I’m Jon, a Mac expert, and owner of a 2023 MacBook Pro. I frequently resize images on my Mac and made this guide to show you how.

Sometimes, an image might be too big or too small to fit in your presentation, send over email, or fit into your ever-growing photo library. This guide reviews the easiest ways to resize images on your Mac, so continue reading to learn more!

Method 1: Adjust Using Preview

Preview is Apple’s built-in image editing software that allows users to easily edit and resize images from their Macs.

Follow these steps to adjust the size of your photo using Preview:

Step 3: Once you open “Markup” mode, choose the “Adjust Size” icon.

Note: If you want to keep the original file, be sure to save your new changes to the file as an Export. Otherwise, Preview will save your recent edits in the existing file.

Method 2: Use Mac’s Photos App

Mac’s Photos application is another option for adjusting photo sizing. Here’s how to change the size of your image in Photos:

Step 1: Open the iPhotos/Photos app.

Step 5: Choose your desired size between Small, Medium, Large, Full Size, and Custom.

Method 3: Use Pages on Mac

Mac’s native text editor, Pages, is another easy way to manipulate the sizing of your photo. If you regularly use it, you likely know your way around it, but did you know you can use it to resize images?

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Open Pages.

Step 2: Paste the image you want to work within your document. Select “Arrange” from the window’s toolbar on the right side.

Step 3: In the “Arrange” window, choose the correct height and width for your photo. If the “Constrain proportion” checkbox is marked, change the height or width, and the other measurement will adjust accordingly.

Method 4: Resize Batches of Photos

There’s no need to meticulously resize each photo in your collection, as you can easily resize a batch of images at once.

Apple’s Preview app allows users to resize images in batches, which saves time.

Here’s how:

Here are some of the most common questions we get about resizing photos on Macs.

How Do You Resize an Image without Losing Quality?

Reducing the size of your photos can lead to poorer quality images, which can deter downsizing. However, you can resize the image but retain the quality with a simple trick. All you need to do is determine the exact size you need for your project or purpose.

For instance, if you’re using the image in the corner of a presentation, simply resize it to fit your dimensions. Avoid enlarging smaller images, as this can result in a poor-quality, pixelated photo.

Depending on where you adjust the sizing of your photo, you may or may not get a quality slider on the resizing option. If you do, ensure you move the slider toward the “Best” side of the slider to get a better-quality photo.

How Do You Resize an Image for Mac Wallpaper?

Setting one of your photos as your Mac’s wallpaper is an excellent way to add a personalized touch to your device. However, sometimes the photo might not fit the screen properly, making it seem disproportionate or off-kilter.

Large photo files consume a considerable amount of space on your Mac, so compressing the files is necessary from time to time, especially if you need to send the photo via email.

You can use several methods to resize photos on your Mac, including the Photos, Preview, and Pages apps. But the process is straightforward regardless of which option you choose.
