Microsoft is hell bent on having developers create more apps for Windows 10 as it moves to create synergy between both the desktop and mobile versions of the operating system. One way the company is expected to do this, is via a program known only as Project Islandwood.

For those who might have no idea what Project Islandwood is, well, it is a program that should allow developers to port their iOS apps over to the PC in order for them to work on both the desktop and mobile versions of Windows 10.

The software giant created a post on its blog that is designed to help developers port their apps. The company highlighted the best ways to port apps, and also how to deal with problems when the apps have been ported. The post mainly contains geeky languages, so if you’re not a developer and lack the understanding of the meanings of several jargons, then you’ll be overly confused.

The post also focuses on an app known as Pori Fashion Show, created by Dong Yoon Park, Senior User Experience Designer at Microsoft. The post goes into detail of how Park got his iOS app up and running on Windows along with other important information.

Here’s a snippet of what Microsoft had to say via its blog:

iOS supports layout optimization for different sizes of screens through ‘Size Classes.’ Since Pori Fashion Show used constraint-based auto layout, he decided to add phone-specific layout by using the dimension information of the canvas size.

The Windows design guideline provides the break points for adaptive and responsive design. You can use this as guideline for setting up the threshold for your own app’s content layout.

From what we can tell, Pori Fashion Show is a simple app, so porting it to Windows 10 shouldn’t be much of a hassle. What we’d like to know is how difficult it would be for developers to port something more complex. Microsoft should offer more insight into this aspect of porting iOS apps to Windows 10 in the future.

Several apps have already been ported through the Project Islandwood program. For those unaware, both the Instagram and Facebook Messenger apps are direct ports from iOS. The software giant also plans to bring desktop x86 apps to the Windows Store via Project Centennial.

Microsoft Enlists Bing To Enhance Windows 8.1 Apps

In its ongoing challenge to attract more users to Windows 8, Microsoft is offering bits of its Bing Internet search service to boost the functionality of third-party Windows Store applications.

“We’re opening up Bing as an application development platform so you can use all this investment we’ve put into crawling the Web and understanding entities [to] build that richness into your own applications running on top of Windows,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said Wednesday before a crowd of developers at the company’s Build conference in San Francisco.

Get more on what Microsoft said about Windows 8.1 at Build

To this end, the company has launched a developer portal that details a collection of APIs (application programming interfaces) Bing offers. These services can be embedded in Windows Store apps, providing functionality such as optical character recognition (OCR), language translation and displaying geographically situated, three-dimensional maps and aerial photographs.

Steve Ballmer at Build

The Bing services are a “great new addition to the broader Microsoft platform and likely to enable new styles of applications,” wrote Al Hilwa, an IDC program director covering application development tools, by email from the Build conference.

Bing’s bigger role

Microsoft has been increasingly embedding Bing functionality into its own products, such as Windows 8, Windows Phone and the Xbox. Windows 8.1, for instance, provides a unified search function that can execute a single search across the device’s directories, the user’s files on Microsoft’s SkyDrive service, and the Internet. Microsoft has also prepared two Bing-powered apps for its Windows 8.1 update: a food and drink app and a health and fitness app, both of which draw from Bing’s searching and mapping capabilities to offer personalized recommendations and situational awareness.

The new APIs will offer some of this functionality for third-party apps.

The Bing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Control, available as a customer technical preview, provides OCR capability, an interface with a device’s camera, and even a basic user interface. The user snaps a photo that is sent to Bing, which returns the extracted text. During the keynote at Build, which was available via a spotty webcast, Microsoft Vice President of Online Services Gurdeep Singh Pall demonstrated how this service could be used to harvest data from a business card.

Pall also demonstrated how the OCR service can be linked with the new Translator Control, which can translate the text among 40 different languages. He showed off the new text-to-speech control, which provides a way for users to issue commands to their apps vocally, as well as have the apps respond vocally.

“In the coming decade, apps will have eyes, ears and will have a mouth,” Pall said.

The company also unveiled some new services that could be used to build immersive or augmented reality interfaces showing users what is around them.

The Bing Entity API, which will be available to developers within the next few months, identifies nearby landmarks and types of businesses that apps can use to offer location-specific information to their users. Microsoft has also released a SDK (software development kit) that shows developers how to embed Bing maps and 3D aerial views of places into their apps. Bing can also provide mapping, routing, and traffic information for these maps as well.

According to Microsoft, Bing executes about 17.4 percent of all searches conducted in the U.S.

How To Set Up Port Forwarding In Windows

Every now and then you’ll stumble upon an app or game that requires you to do something called “port forwarding.” Without port forwarding, “inbound” traffic and data coming in from the Internet won’t be able to communicate with the app or game, and you won’t be able to carry out certain Internet-based functions of that software. This tutorial shows you how to set up port forwarding in Windows.

Note: you may also need to set up port forwarding on your router, for which we have a separate guide.

Set Up Port Forwarding on Windows

To forward ports in Windows, follow the instructions below:

If you’ve had your PC for a while, you should see a long list of “Rules” in the middle pane, applying to the various apps, services, and software that you allow to deliver traffic to your PC.

You’ll see the protocol type (usually TCP or UDP, though there are various alternatives) as well as the “Local port” – the port in your firewall that you’re allowing the connection through.

The really important one here is the Remote port, which is the port the client (app or software that’s trying to connect with you) is using to connect.

With most apps, as with the images above, a remote port is randomly assigned by the client, so it just defaults to “All ports” on the Windows firewall.

Create New Port Rules

To create a new port rule, follow these steps:

In the “New Inbound Rule Wizard” window, select “Port,” then tap “Next.”

Select “TCP” or “UDP” and enter the specific port number you want to forward. You can also select “All local ports” or specify an IP address or a range of addresses you want to forward the port to.

Select “Allow the connection” and press “Next.”

After completing these steps, the port should be forwarded to Windows, and any traffic that comes in on that port will be directed to the specified IP address.

Tip: now that you know how to set up port forwarding in Windows, you should also make sure these apps are not on your Windows PC, and look at our assessment of Windows Defender and whether it’s good enough to protect your PC.

Frequently Asked Questions Is Port Forwarding Safe?

Port forwarding is mostly safe, but it is dependent on the security of the server and machine at the other end. If, for example, you’re setting up port forwarding to host an online game, it’s worth quickly checking online whether there are security issues with that game or software.

If you set up, say, an online Minecraft server, then you’ll want to make sure that server’s kept up to date and that you and other users on the server are using firewalls and – ideally – NAT.

The key is to know the software that you’re port forwarding to and that it’s a trusted piece of software.

Can I use port forwarding to improve my Internet speed?

Port forwarding does not directly improve Internet speed. However, it can improve the performance of certain network services, such as online gaming or file sharing, by allowing them to bypass certain network restrictions and firewalls.

What happens if I forward a port that is already being used by another program?

If you forward a port that is already in use, it can cause conflicts and may prevent the other program from functioning properly. It’s important to only forward ports that are not already being used by another program.

How To Fix Apps That Are Blurry In Windows 10?

The problem mainly arises while trying to run older applications, when you can see the blurry text on Windows apps. Here, I shall be discussing how to fix apps that are blurry using the built-in features in Windows 10.

We have shown a VIDEO walk through at the end of the post for easy solution.

Some of the apps you will be facing this error on include web browsers, where the issue is more hardware-based than software. Blurry text Windows 10 on Chrome, where many users reported this was a hardware bug and was caused due to incorrect DPI configuration.

Read: Fixing bad Chrome fonts

Changing the ClearType text status has been accepted widespread to solve this error on Windows 10. Check the article mentioned above if you see blurry text and fonts on Windows 10.

As mentioned above, although Windows 10 does a decent job of maintaining the output resolution, many developers have not yet upgraded the older applications for the newer and better high definition displays. With the Creators’ update, Microsoft introduced built-in support for display troubleshooting in case of blurry applications and texts.

Here are some of the solutions that you can try for troubleshooting the blurry apps and fonts on Windows 10.

The DPI scaling in Windows 10 has been a long-standing issue, especially on higher resolution monitors. Microsoft handled well and introduced built-in support for upscaling the applications. This is achieved using the troubleshooter that kicks in automatically when Windows detects blurry resolutions.

To enable this troubleshooter, follow these steps:

Open the Settings app and go to the System section.

Make sure the Display is selected from the left pane.

Advanced scaling settings

Let Windows try to fix apps so they’re not blurry

Restart your computer and check if the blurry apps error persists.

On many newer displays, you may find problems running legacy applications, which are not calibrated to the high DPI displays. Extension of the troubleshooter mentioned above exists under the Properties window of the application, which can be modified as follows:

Launch the app that you wish to upscale on your computer.

Select Properties from this menu that appears.

Switch to the Compatibility tab.

Change high DPI settings

Override high DPI scaling behavior

Select System (Enhanced) from the drop-down menu next to Scaling performed by

Restart the application to check for any visual quality improvements.

This is one of the best ways to check for improvements within individual applications, as the changed settings apply only to individual applications and are not implemented globally.

If the solutions provided above did not help you in solving blurry text on Windows 10, it is possible that the hardware is not being able to transmit the instructions correctly. This can be fixed by updating the instruction components to their latest versions, which are referred to as drivers.

Update the display drivers to the latest version, and check if the error persists. You should be able to easily fix apps that are blurry on Windows 10 if you saw this error due to outdated device drivers.

If none of the solutions provided above helped you in solving the blurry apps and texts on Windows 10, you can try a workaround to adjust the global resolution scale settings. Although not exactly a solution, you can use custom resolutions to fine-tune the resolution to perfectly match your display.

Follow these steps for the same:

Open the Settings app and go to the System section.

Make sure the Display is selected from the left pane.

Advanced scaling settings

Go to the Custom Scaling section, and enter a scaling value between the scaling sizes mentioned.

Mix and match until you find the perfect resolution that matches your display size.

So there you have it. Now you know the steps and solutions involved to fix apps that are blurry. Comment below if you found this useful in solving Windows 10 blurry apps, and to discuss further the same.

Endless hours of fun with Windows 8, Windows 10 top Checkers apps

Checkers Deluxe is a great free version of checkers games for Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 users. You can play six different game variations which will enhance your checkers experience.

This free Windows 8, Windows 10 features the classic game of checkers. Jump over the pieces of your opponent in order to “eat” them and make them disappear from the board. The player who manages to scratch off all the pieces first wins. The app allows for 2 levels of difficulty, while the game-play is judged by the standard US Tournament rules.

Regardless of the fact that this is a free app, the graphics are quite an improvement from the previous appication we reviewed. Here a player can start a tournament against a human opponent or a computer. There are three levels available: Beginner, Medium and Expert so the app is a great environment for noobs to start training. A plus you will certainly notice while playing with this app is the great background sounds.

With this app we notice some improvements as well. There is an extra level of difficulty added – expert. Users can still opt to play against the computer or a human opponent, while progress and wins are being kept track of. The goal is however to drop in the checkers to get 4 in row before the other player does, hence the name of the app.

This paid Windows 8, Windows 10 app features improved graphics and an addictive game play. The pieces have to be captured before the opponent and one can do so diagonally. There are 3 levels of difficulty but what’s special about this app is that it allows for machines to play against each other. The game can also be set to show the available moves, so if you haven’t played before you have a chance to learn now.

This is a variation to the game of checkers, which allows for the pieces to jump in every direction, not just diagonally like in the classic game. More than that in Dameo they can jump over whole rows. Being an online app you can team up and play with player from around the world. The app brings a social element to the game play, allowing chat. ELO Rankings will show you how many games you won or lost and the developing trends.
