Apple has re-opened more than half of its retail stores in China after the coronavirus outbreak forced it to temporarily shut down all of the corporate offices and outlets earlier in February.
According to Bloomberg, 29 of the 42 Apple Stores in China were open yesterday:
Apple’s retail footprint in China is critical to the company’s sales. The store closures were one of two main reasons for Apple saying it wouldn’t meet its revenue target of at least $63 billion in the current quarter ending in March.
Plus, the current COVID-19 outbreak is the reason why Apple has yet to give a new revenue forecast beyond cautioning previously that it wouldn’t be able to meet its previous quarterly guidance due to the virus situation.
A quick inspection of Apple’s retail website reveals that most of the re-opened locations are still operating on shortened hours. For example, some stores are open for fewer than eight hours versus their typical 12-hour day, depending on location. Apple also wants customers to wear a mask and take a temperature test before entering a reopened retail store.

Thirteen Apple retail locations in China remain closed, including stores in Shanghai International Trade iapm, Nanjing Jinmaohui, Suzhou, Hangzhou Vientiane City, West Lake, Xiamen New Life Plaza, Tahoe Plaza. All Apple retail stores in Tianjin and Chongqing, each of which hosts three outlets, are still shuttered.
Apple hasn’t said when the remaining stores will reopen beyond noting that operating hours in some sores will return to normal as early as the end of this week or early March.
China is Apple’s second-largest market by revenue: in the previous quarter, the company reported $13.6 billion in Chin revenue, accounting for nearly fifteen percent of its total revenue for the quarter.
Besides, most of Apple’s suppliers are from China, makes the Cupertino tech company extremely vulnerable to the coronavirus situation there as opposed to Samsung which predominantly uses suppliers and facilities in Vietnam and Korea to assemble its products.
Making matters worse, some Apple stores in China remain closed, affecting Apple’s sales in the region. Moreover, the company is temporarily experiencing constrained global iPhone supply because of low employee turnout at Apple’s suppliers.
Foxconn, the world’s biggest contract manufacturer, has begun providing incentives for workers to return to its assembly plants in China’s Shenzhen and Chengzhou. Summing up, many analysts are expecting some short-term losses but most believe longterm effects to Apple’s business will be negligible.
The coronavirus has so far infected over 80 thousand people worldwide, with the global death toll at 2,698 as of today, according to the World Health Organization. There were 156 new deaths and 715 new cases in the past 24 hours alone.
The virus continues spreading around the world, with Italy being hit particularly hard in the past few days as the country’s authorities today urged calm after it was confirmed that seven patients have died so far.
According to Business Insider, more than $200 billion was erased from market caps of Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook in yesterday’s trading as investors braced for the coronavirus to escalate into a pandemic.
AAPL dropped 4.75 percent today amid a broader decline in other stocks and a 1,000-point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average — all because of the COVID-19 scare.

In the waters surrounding Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, there lives a very unusual kind of shark. Known as walking sharks, the nine species of the genus Hemiscyllium have the ability to crawl across the seafloor.
“They’ll stand up on their very muscular pectoral fins and they’ll kind of wiggle along and walk instead of swimming,” says Shannon Corrigan, an evolutionary biologist at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.
Walking sharks can even tolerate short stints in open air as they scramble between tidal pools in their shallow coral reef habitats during low tide. But they’re also noteworthy for another reason: Walking sharks are one of the newest groups of sharks on the planet, appearing on the animals’ evolutionary tree around 44 million years ago, Corrigan and her colleagues reported January 21 in the journal Marine and Freshwater Research. And they suspect that the group may not be done splintering into new species yet.
The researchers looked at when and how the animals evolved into their own species. They found that their ancestors might have colonized different locations by hitchhiking on roving islands. The team hopes that studying these mysterious little sharks can give conservationists information about how best to protect them and perhaps even lead to broader insights about shark evolution in general.
Corrigan is among a group of collaborators who have spent the past 11 years studying walking sharks, work that has included the discovery of four of the group’s nine species. The first ever species of walking shark was described in 1788 and the most recent in 2013. Some walking sharks range across wide swaths of Australia’s northern coast, while others are confined to very small areas. Their territories don’t overlap, but seem to form a rough ring around northern Australia, the island of New Guinea, and several satellite islands.
The researchers suspected that the walking sharks might have split into different species around this ring. But when they began investigating how these sharks evolved over time, they realized that the shark’s history is probably a lot more complicated. “We found this really weird pattern of relationships between the species,” Corrigan says.
The researchers examined genetic material from tissue samples taken from both live walking sharks as well as museum specimens. From there, they constructed an evolutionary tree for the entire group. In several cases, one kind of walking shark was found far from its next closest relative. Walking sharks aren’t very strong swimmers and cannot cross areas of deep water, so they probably didn’t travel so far on foot (or rather, on fin).
Instead, the explanation for the sharks’ scrambled distribution might align with the geologic history of their home region.
“It’s been extremely geologically complex over relatively recent times, so you have a lot of different plates moving together and colliding, and that’s…constantly creating new habitats for marine species,” Corrigan says. “A lot of that ties in pretty nicely with the patterns we were seeing.”
She and her team think that small groups of walking sharks hitched on small island fragments. As these islands were moved about by plate tectonics, the sharks were carried to a new territory far from their fellows. Eventually, barriers the sharks could travel over, such as channels of deep water, formed between the groups. Over time, the two separated groups of sharks would have evolved into different species.
The easiest way to tell the different kinds of walking sharks apart is by their striking color patterns; the team has noticed variations in these patterns even within the range of a single species. It’s possible that new species are soon to emerge, or already have emerged but haven’t been recognized yet.
“It really is this nice natural experiment of how sharks evolve,” Corrigan says. “We can go sample and study it in the present day because it’s still happening, we think.” This makes walking sharks ideal for studying more ancient events that might have caused other shark species to evolve as well.
Today, the parts of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and eastern Indonesia where the sharks live are hotspots for biodiversity, particularly among fishes. But they are also currently facing habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing. The fact that most walking shark species are restricted to very small areas makes them particularly vulnerable to these threats. However, because so little is known about walking sharks, scientists aren’t sure yet whether they are in danger.
Corrigan and her collaborators are now working to understand in more detail where exactly each of these sharks is found, how tied they are to particular regions, and what threats they face. Hopefully, this will give scientists the information they need to come up with strategies to protect each of these species.

Stratford City, London, United Kingdom – Tuesday saw grand opening of the Stratford City store located inside London’s two-million-square-foot Westfield Stratford City mall, the largest shopping center in Europe. The mall will also double as the gateway to the future 2012 Olympic Village and stadium in eastern London and Apple should benefit tremendously from the Olympics traffic spike come next summer.

Via Rizzoli, Bologna, Italy – In addition to the Campania store north of Naples in Italy’s Caserta province (Apple’s hundredth store outside the U.S.), Italy will get another store in Bologna’s Via Rizolli this coming Saturday. The country’s eighth Apple store is adorned with the painstakingly restored façade which fits the historic corner building beautifully. chúng tôi explains that it ill be the first Apple store in the country outside a shopping mall.

Catania, Sicily, Italy – Although Apple’s retail site doesn’t list this store yet, chúng tôi has it on good authority that this store will surface inside the Center Sicily shopping mall, which is located in the district of La Tenutella. Grand opening should be September 24, the site reported. It is interesting that in September alone Italy becomes the home to three new Apple stores: the Casert, Campania store that opened September 3, the aforementioned Bologna store due September 17 and this new Sicily location.

Cielo Vista Mall, El Paso, Texas – The upcoming Apple store in the 1.2 million square-foot Cielo Vista Mall is located just two miles from the Mexico border town of Ciudad Juarez. As we explained earlier, this store is the first Texas store west of San Antonio, positioned right next to the Gap store on the ground floor of the shopping mall which is located along Interstate 10 on east side of El Paso. According to El Paso Times, the store will open on the mall’s lower level, next to the Coach store near the JCPenney department store.

Nanjing Road East, Shanghai, China – A property management official told Chinese tech site DoNews that Apple’s massive new Shanghai store could open September 20. Located at the corner of Nanjing Road East and Henan Zhong Lu, within walking distance of Shanghai’s skyscraper panorama, this will be China’s biggest store. It will include four floors of retails space and M.I.C. gadget thinks first floor will be for product demos and sales, with second floor dedicated to Genius Bar and customer programs. The third and fourth floor should house support for business customers and backend operations, respectively. The Nanjing Road East store will be Apple’s fifth retail store in mainland China or sixth if you include the upcoming Hong Kong store at IFC center, scheduled to open September 24.

Jungfernstieg, Hamburg, Germany – As we already noted, Germany will get its seventh store this coming Saturday, in the heart of Hamburg next to the Alster lake and right on Jungfernstieg, the city’s famous shopping street. The wide, two-level store is about eight miles south of the existing Alstertal store and will become Hamburg’s second Apple retail location. Hamburg itself is Germany’s second-largest city and the seventh-largest in the European Union with population of over 1.8 million people, or 4.3 million people for the Hamburg Metropolitan Region that includes parts of the neighboring Federal States of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

Apple’s beautiful Bejing Retail Store
Apple felt incredibly bullish on China in today’s conference call, rattling off numbers that even Tim Cook admitted they wouldn’t have believed if they had been told a year ago. How big is China for Apple?
In the year ago quarter, Apple counted $630 Million in revenues from China. Today, Apple grew that by a factor of six to $3.8B of the total $28+B of their total revenues for the quarter. That’s 13.3% of Apple’s total business by revenue which now comes from China.
To put that in perspective, $3.8B would have been over two-thirds of Apple’s 2007 (iPhone release) same quarter revenue and more than Apple’s whole global revenue for June ’05.
But ‘we’re only scratching the surface’.
Cook talked again about pre-paid phones (which are dominant in China) and a deal with the 600M-user China Mobile which is said to be in the wings. Apple is also said to be exploring a cheaper iPhone offering which would appeal to a much broader swath of the Chinese market (Indian too). This comes against a backdrop of Google Chairmen Eric Schmidt who is also bullish on Asia for Android.
Apple is also being aggressive in their China retail stores, choosing to open larger flagship stores which take more time to build. CFO Peter Oppenheimer mentioned that the Hong Kong Flagship store at the IFC would be opening this quarter. But Apple has an order of magnitude more stores opening up across China. Apple now sells through four stores. They have over 30 planned just for the next year.
If Apple’s growth in China stays on the current pace, which ‘scratching the surface’ seems to at least partially imply, China will account for over $20B in revenue at this time next year – which could start approach Apple’s US revenues even if Apple continues to grow globally as it has.
Below is an edited transcript of Cook’s remarks on China from Macworld:
China was very key to our results. As a reminder, for greater China—mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan—year-over-year it was up over 6 times. And the revenue was approximately $3.8 billion during the quarter. And that makes the year-to-date numbers through the three quarters we’ve had thus far around $8.8 billion. So this has been a substantial opportunity for Apple, and I firmly believe that we’re just scratching the surface right now. I think there is an incredible opportunity for Apple there.
[For the iPhone,] we did add 42 new carriers and 15 new countries during the quarter. So we continued our expansion efforts… However, those occurred throughout the quarter. The real sequential improvement, frankly, was due to emerging and developed markets. China was a big part of it, Latin America (driven by Brazil and Mexico) was a big part of it, and the Middle East was a big part of it. Which I think is great for Apple, because these are markets that Apple historically has not been as strong in. And we’re really beginning to see the fruits of our labor in these markets.
Prepaid or unlocked phones—said more in English, phones sold without a contract—are very key in China and a number of the emerging markets, where the credit systems are not as well established as they are in the U.S., Japan, western Europe, Australia, et cetera. You can look at our volume, the iPhone volume for the first three quarters of fiscal year was up 5 times year-over-year. And iPhone is the key contributor to greater China having a cumulative revenue of around $8.8 billion for the first three quarters. And so I’m not saying at all that we have figured out precisely how to play perfectly in the environment—we haven’t. I think we have more to do and more to learn, but I feel very, very good about our progress.
If any of us would have been told a year ago that we would do $3.8 billion in greater China in a quarter, I don’t think very many of us would have believed it, and I don’t think any of you would’ve believed it. And so we feel very, very good about it and we’re taking those learnings and applying those to other markets as well.Related articles

What felt like only a matter of time has finally arrived: Apple has just confirmed its plans for this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference in light of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Apple today announced via the Apple developers news and update page that it will be hosting “a completely new online experience” for this year’s WWDC. The announcement was also confirmed via an official press release sent out today as well. Here’s the announcement via the news portal:
This June, WWDC20 brings a completely new online experience to millions of talented and creative developers around the world. Join us for a fully packed program — including Keynote and sessions — to gain early access to the future of Apple platforms and engage with Apple engineers. Dive into an exciting learning experience and discover how to create your most innovative apps yet using the latest Apple technologies.
The announcement is a very Apple announcement. It speaks about innovation because of the new format, hosting the entire event online and yet still managing to deliver plenty of content and new information along the way. However, a quick search of both the news post and the press release reveals that Apple doesn’t actually specifically call out the novel coronavirus pandemic or COVID-19, the disease it causes.
However, Phil Schiller does mention the “current health situation”, and that can only really mean one thing:
We are delivering WWDC 2023 this June in an innovative way to millions of developers around the world, bringing the entire developer community together with a new experience,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2023 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world. We will be sharing all of the details in the weeks ahead.
And Craig Federighi weighs in as well:
With all of the new products and technologies we’ve been working on, WWDC 2023 is going to be big,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “I look forward to our developers getting their hands on the new code and interacting in entirely new ways with the Apple engineers building the technologies and frameworks that will shape the future across all Apple platforms.
Apple notes in the press release that there are more than 23 million registered developers across the globe, and this year’s WWDC will provide them with the tools and insights they will need to build the next great app for Apple’s ecosystem. Plus, we’ll see updates for iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, macOS, and tvOS, of course.
WWDC 2023 will happen in June, but the press release doesn’t block out any specific dates. So we’ll have to wait and see when, exactly, we’ll be tuning into this year’s developers conference online.
In addition to all of this, Apple has confirmed it will be donating $1 million to local San Jose organizations to “offset associated revenue loss”, which is tied to the new online-only format.
