Microsoft’s Plumbago App Promises To Make Your Chickenscratch Legible
In concept, it sounds useful: a Microsoft Garage app that promises to smooth, or “beautify,” your handwriting when you take notes on a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 tablet, such as the Microsoft Surface. Unfortunately, Plumbago’s smoothing feature doesn’t seem to work, yet.
Think of Plumbago as a stripped-down version of OneNote, with an emphasis on easy doodling and adding art. (Mary Jo Foley made the analogy that Plumbago is to OneNote as Sway is to Word, which isn’t far off.)
In execution, Plumbago is pretty simple: You can configure a “notebook” of up to 25 pages, with custom backgrounds for each page. One of these happens to be a “lined paper” background, which should take men and women of a certain age back to their grammar school days.
The lined paper background and a “handwriting smoothing” scrollbar—basically the only setting available—inidcate that Plumbago is for people who prefer to take handwritten notes on a tablet. On the Surface, that role is filled by OneNote; you can press the button on the Surface stylus to launch the app, even from sleep. But as simple as OneNote is, there’s an apparent risk of getting lost in its interface, with notebooks and other embeddable objects crowding the view.

Plumbago’s radial menu is very, very intuitive.
Plumbago keeps it simple: The radial menu makes selecting a virtual pen or pencil extremely easy, and the “ink” acts like real ink or graphite on real paper. You can import images into the notebook, but only from files stored on your computer. (Sway, by contrast, brings an image discovery tool right inside the app.)
As an experimental Microsoft Garage project, Plumbago is expected to have some quirks. And yes, that’s indeed the case.
One issue I found was the inability for the ink to recognize portrait mode, the most natural way (for me) to take notes on a tablet. While the page covered the length of the my Surface Book’s screen, the ink stopped being recognized midway down.

Plumbago’s index view should show all of your pages at once, but it appears to have a glitch or two.
More troubling, the handwriting smoothing feature—Plumbago’s primary selling point—did nothing for me at all. I tried out Plumbago on a Surface Book in tablet mode as well as a Surface Pro 4; adjusting the handwriting smoothing slider bar up or down made no noticeable difference, even after saving and reopening the notebook. I’m not sure if I was simply using it incorrectly, or if the feature is actually broken. Needless to say, it was very disappointing.
Microsoft, however, said that the handwriting smoothing is there — it’s just more subtle than you might think.
“Plumbago released through the Microsoft Garage as an experiment in order to understand how people want to use it,” Gavin Jancke, general manager of engineering in Microsoft Research and the de facto user interface software engineer for the app, said in an emailed statement. “Feedback like yours is exactly what we need to tune the app to work the way our customers want it to work. In this prototype, the handwriting beautification settings are subtle. The effect is more obvious in certain characters. The editor can more visually see the effect by drawing a line of cursive ‘e’s such as at the end of the tutorial video.”
One of the tips I was given as a young reporter was to toss out my old notebooks after a period of time, as a hedge against being asked to testify in a court case. My real fear, however, was being asked to read my notes, as my handwriting has progressively degraded over the years. Today, I can simply record someone’s voice on my phone, take a picture, or type notes using my PC. But I’ve always felt that I could scrawl a note on my tablet in a pinch. I’m just not sure that at this point it will be with Plumbago.

Where else can I go from playing Shadow of the Colossus to that awful Little Britain game? Or those original pair of Disaster Report games? Either way, with a jailbroken game emulating these older, less easy to get hold of games has never been easier. With a huge catch.
Because those behind the scenes are having to refigure out emulation on a different skew of a familiar platform, it’s thrown a few wrenches in the works. As of right now, there’s a lot of games that do work, but not the full 100% list that you’d find enjoyment on PCSX2 and the like. It’s a work in progress and at some point, should see more added.
You can check out what games are working, but your mileage may vary. However, I’ve had pretty much excellent results with all of the games I’ve tested on the playable side of things.
What you’ll needYou’re going to need to download a few programs and acquire your PS2 files elsewhere.
On your PS4 you’ll either need IPI, Remote Package Installer or if you plan on sending them over by USB, just ignore that and install via GoldHEN as you usually would. Follow that tutorial here.
Converting PS2 games to PS4 PKG filesWith PS2 games, you’ll notice that more often than not you’ll get a CUE and BIN file. PCSX2 and a few other emulators don’t actually need an ISO file anymore and it’s a holdover for those that want to burn a physical disc rather than play digitally.
However, to make a PKG file you’re going to need those ISOs. The program will ultimately crash if you try to put in the BIN or CUE.
Open up PS2 Classic GUI (it’s in the Debug folder, you can make a shortcut for easy access) and go through the tutorial to familiarise yourself with the various buttons. It’s straight forward and once you’re done, just close the window. It’ll boot up a low-res PS2 video and then open the program.
Convert PS2 BIN files to ISONow open WinBin2ISO, a freeware program that doesn’t need installing. Point it towards your BIN file – ignore the CUE – and where you want it to go. From here, you’ll want to go and head back into PS2 GUI and press the ISO button to get your ISO. You can rename it in the title section if it doesn’t appear right.
Convert to PS4 PKG FilesPress Create PS2 Classic and put it where you want to save it. Now you need to either put it onto your USB drive or send it over remotely via FTP to get the game onto your console. It should install and work like any other game, so experiment and enjoy your classic games!

We’re living in a strange moment in history. In the face of COVID-19 many of us are withdrawing into our homes. Some of us suddenly have a surplus of time. While leisure might have once seemed like an unachievable goal, it now has an unsettling, tenuous quality: Rather than being born out of a desire for relaxation, it is the result of a slow-down that was forced upon us. Around the country and around the world, many of us are in a position where we are sequestered and desperately seeking new kinds of distraction.
In my forthcoming book, Play Like a Feminist, I argue that playing more games (in every way imaginable) is of import to feminists: It’s an issue of equality and quality of life, and one essential to restructuring the flawed nature of the video game industry. To that end, I argue that feminists need to find time and space to play more, and to create more opportunities for play for those around them. While my book could not possibly have anticipated the strange crisis of our current moment, I would like to suggest that some of you can use this opportunity to find ways to deliberately play more and do it on devices that you already own.
The problem is finding the right place to start. As a woman who has researched video games for more than a decade, I get many requests for recommendations from unlikely players. Most of the people who ask are not “hardcore gamers”—they are people who might be called “game curious” (a term that I have borrowed from movements based out of Toronto and Montreal). But, while the game curious might want to experiment with digital leisure, they don’t always know where to start: The Apple Store can be daunting and online lists work under the assumption that players understand the terminology, play styles, and the lineage of past games.
The following suggestions are for excellent games, meant for those who don’t play a lot. Some of them are artful and literary. Some of them are weird. Many are sweet and thoughtful. Most of them are engaging and might, perhaps, help to distract you in ways that will help you survive the next month (or longer). At the same time, I hope, many of the games I’m listing here might convince you that video games are important, and that playing and promoting play is an activist concern.

Dash Adventures
The latest in the Diner Dash franchise is fast paced, funny, and cute. The player is a waitress managing customers, which is more fun than you might think. A good game for those of you looking to feel productive in this unproductive moment.
Dots & Co.
The games in the Dots franchise are a calmer, less visually stimulating version of the Match-3 style of game. The design is minimalist, the colors and animations are not visually overwhelming, and the game is a relaxing way to meditate while you play.
Hungry Babies Mania
A match-3 game with some excellent twists, and more levels than you could ever dream of. While you match fruits in a line, you can simultaneously feed grateful, cute, baby animals.
Polar Pop Mania
An excellent bubble shooter game that is light on narrative and has excellent physics. By tossing balls into the air you save cute baby seals on behalf of a mother seal; breaking them free gives a nice satisfying rush.
Mobile games under $5There are a lot of independent, smaller mobile games that are artful, literary, and satisfying. Here are a few to consider.
Donut County
A weird and hilarious game where you play as a hole in the ground, sucking up everything around you; an apt metaphor for the current zeitgeist. Swallowing up the world into giant holes is the best possible way to spend a few weeks, and the game is still fun on replay.
Gorogoa
A gorgeous silent puzzle game that involves rearranging hand-drawn squares as it tells you a story. It takes a while to get a hang of how to play, but once you get into it, the puzzles are absorbing and visually stunning. If you are going to stare at a screen, this is one of the best ways to do it.
Hexologic
A cool number logic game that would appeal to fans of Sudoku. The game is quiet and relaxing and thoughtful, and it is easy to get lost in. The surrounding art is calming and minimalist, and the logic puzzles are increasingly challenging.
Monument Valley (1 & 2)
The Monument Valley games are breathtakingly beautiful puzzles that have the player navigate through Escher-esque castles and landscapes. Looking at the structures and spaces differently yields answers, making it a game that helps us remember to keep perspective.
Ticket to Ride
The digital version of the popular board game has an excellent online version; you can multiplayer online with friends asynchronously. I always have at least two versions of the game playing in my everyday life, and you can play with bots if your friends aren’t available. When you get bored of the US map, alternate ones are available for purchase.
Rusty Lake Paradise (or any of the Rusty Lake games)
Mobile games $5-$15If you are willing to spend a little bit more money, you can have some truly excellent experiences on your mobile device. Here are a few suggestions.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is the darling of independent games. It’s a deeply involved farming game that involves magical realism and romance. If you’re looking to get sucked into an easy, adorable game world for the next month, this is the best thing money can buy you.

Professor Layton: Curious Village
A story game where you play a detective, solving a larger puzzle in a small town by figuring out the solutions to short riddles. Some of the riddles might be familiar, others are new but the overlay of the cute villagers offering brainteasers is just the right level of fun. There are several other games in this franchise.
In addition, it is also worth mentioning that iOS has Apple Arcade that is $5 a month for unlimited games—there are some excellent options available, such as Sayonara Wild Hearts, Patterned, Jenny LeClue, and Sneaky Sasquatch.
Regardless of what you choose, remember that there are things to do on our screens beyond refreshing the news and scrolling social media. Video games are not all just violent, gun-filled explosions. Try a few experiences, expand your world, and escape for a while.
