However, whereas even six months ago it all seemed to be doom and gloom, many believe that better times are on the horizon, and statistics are emerging that appear to support this newfound enthusiasm.

The challenges currently facing the once-buoyant IT job market are many. Some say that the high number of H1-B visas, the classification used by IT pros to work in the country on a temporary basis, is to blame. Many point to overseas outsourcing, and still others finger the lack of control over L-1 intra-company transfer visas as the villain of the piece. But while all these factors have likely had some impact on the IT job market, there can be no denying that the underlying economic issues that have plagued the U.S. economy over the past two years are the real reason why a good IT job is hard to find.

But on the back of statistics such as a 7.2% quarterly increase in gross domestic product, and jobless claims hitting their lowest level in almost three years, many people in and outside the IT industry believe that the economy is turning a corner that will pave the way to recovery.

Even better, to maintain the momentum of that recovery, companies will need to start investing in business expansion and the development of new products and services. This expansion and development process invariably involves IT, along with the accompanying personnel.

Although updates from the government tell us that the economic outlook is brightening, at what point does that translate into a recovery of the IT job market? So with all signs pointing to a recovery in the IT job market, if you have been waiting for the right time to look for a new job, it might just be time to dust off the resume. But what are employers looking for?

In a highly competitive market, just having the right technical skills may no longer be enough. With many experienced and highly motivated IT pros looking for work, competition for desirable positions will likely be fierce for some time to come. Where before you may have been able to rely on your technical savvy and network of contacts, the challenge of being seen by recruiters in such a competitive market requires job seekers to alter the way in which they look for work.

According to Candy Dellinger, director of human resources for Growth Markets & Global Services at Colorado-based Storage equipment manufacturer StorageTek, recruiting the right people has become more of a challenge because there is so much interest in a single position.

Having so many potential applicants for a single position makes it that much harder to set yourself apart from the crowd, though employers are quick to hone in on candidates that offer more that just an acronym-laden skills summary and an impressive project list.

“In addition to a solid skills set, a lot of organizations are also looking for signs of stability,” says Kashou. “Employers are looking for people that will make a commitment. If a candidate has been in a number of short-term jobs or contracts, it doesn’t send the right signals to the recruiter that this candidate will be in for the long haul.”

As far as the tools of the job seekers’ trade go, the resume is still the most powerful tool in the arsenal, though as many recruiters and hiring managers will tell you, it is not used anywhere near as effectively as it could be by experienced techs who prefer to let their skills summary do the talking.

“Prepare a professionally written resume,” says Maitlin, “as statistically they tend to provide better results.”

Many recruiters cite the quality of resumes as a major hurdle in finding the right people. Hard-to-read resumes make it difficult to see what skills a candidate has, and with so many resumes to read for a single position, recruiters will move on to the next resume on the pile rather than battle through pages of meaningless and jumbled information.

In truth, it might not matter how good a resume or the corresponding candidate is, and many qualified and eminently capable IT professionals may miss the initial wave of vacancies due simply to the depth of the available talent pool.

“Good people get passed up all the time because of the volume of resumes that a hiring manager receives,” says Kashou. “To be considered a prime candidate you will need to have at least five years of experience in your chosen field, and a solid understanding of the business applications of IT. We are seeing candidates who meet these requirements start to get multiple offers, and they have no problem getting employed.”

While things start to look good for experienced techs, the outlook for those with less than two years experience is not as bright. If you are newly minted tech, or are even relatively new to the industry, you should be prepared for the opportunities to be scarce, and the competition stiff, for some time yet.

To be even more precise, Microsoft was referring to a specific model. According to Redmond, the entire Surface Pro family will be getting Windows 10. They are, however, preparing a special update for the Surface, not qualifying which one exactly, that will bring Windows 10 features to the tablet without bringing Windows 10. Considering the Surface, whether it be the RT or the 2nd generation, is the only Windows RT device line (that we know of), we can pretty much consider this applicable to the whole platform. And this can practically be considered the writing on the wall for Windows RT.

There will probably be no tears shed for the platform. Indeed, Windows RT was perhaps a bigger wart than Windows 8 itself. While the focus on ARM tablets is perhaps a welcome attempt, the implementation has left a bad taste in the mouth of even Microsoft’s fans. It offered none of the wide selection of software available to Windows 8, both the Modern and the regular desktop apps. But it also didn’t have access to the conveniences and apps of Microsoft’s real mobile platform, Windows Phone. Windows RT seemed like a half-baked solution made solely for the purpose of putting Windows on ARM tablets.

That purpose might no longer have any value today, with the improvement and proliferation of Intel’s mobile chips. Windows 8 on Intel tablets have found a better niche than Windows RT, and Windows 10 will strive to improve on that. It all looks good for Windows, except for Windows RT. What specific Windows 10 features Microsoft plans to port over, it isn’t saying yet, so we’ll have to wait for more definite information.

That said, the situation does make one wonder if Microsoft still has any plans for the ARM tablet market. Intel is by no means the king of that market, and some might argue that the likes of Qualcomm are still a few steps ahead of the game. Granted, there hasn’t been much demand for ARM-based Windows 8 devices, but probably only because Windows RT proved to be a disaster. Will Microsoft be developing full Windows port for ARM, or has it tied the fate of Windows to Intel and x86/x64 in general? We’ll have to wait and see how it plans to push through with Windows 10’s convergence to find any clues to these questions.

And believe us when we tell you, that list is a long one. But these are not outrageous demands, as it would feel normal for downloaded and installed software to take the same aspect as the OS it runs on.

This will make the certain app feel like a system native and create an overall harmony of shapes that will surely delight users.

The important thing to remember is that Windows 11 is still in its beta testing phase and it can’t be labeled as a complete experience.

Can Oxytocin Get Me A Boyfriend?

We met up at a dim sum place in Chinatown. He smiled when he saw me, and I gave him a long hug. Already, there was none of the stiff awkwardness that had plagued our first two dates. What my companion didn’t know was that minutes before arriving at the restaurant, I had inhaled two puffs of oxytocin, a polypeptide hormone that might be the biological basis for love.

The brain releases oxytocin into the bloodstream during physical contact such as stroking, hugging, and sex. When this happens, blood pressure lowers and you feel calm, safe, and trusting. As a part of the body’s anti-stress system, it works as a mirror to adrenalin, the hormone associated with the fight-or-flight response. I was researching oxytocin for an article about the science of love, and I decided to conduct a little experiment: Could taking the hormone before a date make me fall in love?

I ordered the $60 bottle of OxytocinFactor from ABC Nutriceuticals, one of a handful of companies that sells the hormone as a nasal spray. Three days later, a box containing 30 milliliters of oxytocin arrived at my doorstep from Boise, Idaho. The packaging read, “The hormone that makes love and relationship possible.” Bryan Post, the owner of the company, told me that he tested his product on “himself, his mother and 30 other people.” He claims the drug isn’t addictive, and it won’t get you high—it just “lowers your anxiety.”

For decades after its discovery in 1906, oxytocin was regarded as a “female hormone” because mothers’ brains release it during childbirth, according to Kerstin Moberg, a Swedish scientist and an early pioneer in oxytocin science. But in the late 1980s, Moberg’s research showed that both men and women get an oxytocin rush when they are in physical contact. Animal studies in the 1990s found that the brains of many other mammals release oxytocin during mating.

Oxytocin products are being marketed on the internet as pills and sprays to increase trust and cure stress.

I also spoke with two women who definitely don’t believe the oxytocin rush is all placebo effect. Susan Kuchinskas and Elisabeth Cruz organize oxytocin parties in Berkeley, California. Called “Love Chemistry,” the parties are for people who are interested in the science of love, says Kuchinskas. At the parties, people take artificially produced oxytocin together as an icebreaker. Cruz and Kuchinskas have gotten many different reactions from the attendees. “Some people feel warm and then they feel really calm while others feel disconnected, and they don’t know if they like it or not,” says Cruz. “There have also been nights when people feel so comfortable they don’t want to go home.”

But many scientists remain dismissive of how oxytocin products are being marketed on the internet as pills and sprays to increase trust and cure stress. “Some of the indications and proposed usages of oxytocin might very well be true, but there is too little research to say so yet,” says Moberg. Many of the properties attributed to the hormone rely on just one study, she explains.

There are many studies, however, that have examined the effects of oxytocin on animals. In one 2003 experiment, researchers petted pairs of rats that were caged together. When they were later released into a larger group, the two rats were much more likely to mate than rats that hadn’t been stroked. The researchers saw the same results among pairs of rats that received injections of oxytocin instead of petting.

I was skeptical that my spray would have any effect at all. Morberg told me that when oxytocin is released into the bloodstream it comes in waves, sometimes over a long period of time. So taking a dose through the nose might produce an effect, but it will never be as strong as when the body releases the hormone naturally.

On the train I felt a little dizzy; I imagined the liquid ascending into my brain and expanding like a cloud. But I started to feel my otherwise tense shoulders relaxing. By the time I arrived at the restaurant, 20 minutes had passed since I’d inhaled the oxytocin.

I decided not to tell my date I had taken the hormone. Kinsbourne had explained that if just one person acts more comfortable and interested, it can spark a natural release of oxytocin in the other person. My companion was tall with dark hair, and I thought I had never seen him so nicely dressed before. He wore dark jeans, a black jacket and a hat (in retrospect, I hate chunky hip-hop caps, but at the time I found everything about him very charming.) We took a tiny table in the middle of the room. It was a brightly lit, busy place, and the waitresses were screaming loud orders in Shanghainese. It wasn’t romantic, but I didn’t care—I was in a very good mood.

And my date definitely seemed more confident and relaxed. I sensed that he liked this calmer version of me better than the very intense and chatty version he had met before. We took a long walk home, and, for the first and only time, I imagined us as a couple.

We were going uptown on the same train, and before he headed out, he asked me if he could come with me back to my place. Sitting there close to him, I wanted to say yes, and it felt strange to leave him after such an intimate evening. But something made me hesitate, the train stopped, and I said no. He bent forward and kissed me on the cheek, looking miserable as he left the train. Oxytocin might have increased my trust and made me more patient, but it hadn’t made me lose my guard.

After our very affectionate date, I was excited to meet him again a few days later. I didn’t take oxytocin this time. He came to my place for pancakes, and I was a little nervous. As he sat there in my kitchen, we suddenly had nothing to talk about. It was back to stiff conversation. I didn’t find him very attractive and got annoyed that I had to come up with things to talk about.

I think he could feel it, and after we said goodbye, he sent me a text thanking me for the pancakes. I never heard from him again. Maybe I was under the spell of oxytocin that earlier night, or perhaps it was, as Kinsbourne said, “the magic of the third date.”

Let’s take a look at seven key lessons you can take from entertainment and apply to your content marketing campaigns, regardless of industry.

1. Content Can Be a Product

The entertainment industry shows us how many different ways content can be a product.

Content marketers have often heard, “think like a media company,” but assumed that meant a newspaper or magazine.

But content and media are more than that.

Content can be all kinds of different experiences.

Take Disney, for example. It’s one of the biggest media companies out there.

And Disney has all different types of content and media under its umbrella — movies, TV shows, music albums, news TV, a streaming platform, books, Broadway shows, ice shows, and even entire theme parks.

We don’t explore all the different options we have for content channels when we’re just focused on what other marketers are doing.

When we look outside our own industry and at other products, industries, and niches, we tend to explore more creative options.

2. Diversify Your Assets

Building off the Disney example, just look at that list of different areas of content they produce. Their content portfolio is diversified.

It doesn’t matter whether a child prefers books, short videos, or listening to music, there are multiple options for parents to provide every classic Disney story in their child’s format of choice.

Diversifying your content has two main benefits:

It creates a way to meet a potential audience member where they’re at and bring them into your brand’s world, regardless of their content format preferences. It can be difficult to convince a stranger to your brand or content to engage that first time in a format they’re not a fan of in the first place.

Once people are in your world or your audience, diversifying your content gives you multiple ways to engage them.

Not everyone will consume the same message in multiple formats. But the right and most engaged people – the people most likely to become customers – just might.

3. Fans Love a Good Rerun

Let’s talk more about those “right” people. Your superfans.

In content marketing terms, they’re the prospects who become loyal customers.

In entertainment terms, they’re the ones at the midnight movie premiers; they’re at the stage doors after concerts, with piles of merch for signing.

Superfans are the ones who will watch the TV show every time it’s on, no matter how many times they’ve seen that episode before.

And it’s important to cater to them. With your content, that means creating content experiences prime for binging and consuming more than once.

For example, grouping YouTube videos into playlists, creating reusable assets as lead magnets, and offering downloadable content are different ideas that might apply to your strategy.

Help your audience out and make it easy for them to re-consume or reference your content later. That means keeping it evergreen, user-friendly, and optimized.

4. Amplify Your Greatest Hits

If you have tons of content, it can be overwhelming to think of where to start with your rerun strategy.

So when it comes to any kind of content updating or optimizing, I always recommend starting with your greatest hits.

Your greatest hits are the content proven to attract, engage, or convert those right-fit audience members to take the next step.

It’s objectively successful.

So when it comes to things like diversifying content formats, syndicating content, updating content, and more, your greatest hits are where you should start.

Get those quick wins under your belt.

All of your content experiences should be designed to put your best working content front and center.

5. Know the Difference Between a Single and a B-Side

Content marketers are sometimes guilty of not thinking enough about bottom-of-funnel content for customer retention and loyalty.

Or, if they have thought about it for their company, they often measure it by the same metrics as content at the top of the funnel, such as page views and rankings.

But smart marketers know the difference between a hit single and a B-side.

Not every piece of content needs to rank highly in search or get tons of page views to serve its purpose. Similarly, not every song on an album needs to top the charts and get tons of radio play.

Musicians don’t necessarily release their best songs as singles; they release the ones with the most mainstream appeal. Singles are top-of-funnel content that goes out to find fans, and B-sides are special bonuses for those fans.

6. Content Is a Multichannel Experience

Marketers are too primed to think of media only in terms of newspapers and magazines.

It’s too narrow a comparison.

There are so many more formats and channels out there waiting to inspire you.

As the entertainment world has shown us, content that can cross channels and engage users in multiple ways creates the best experience.

Think of the early ages of MTV and the prime era of music videos. People were accustomed to the music they experienced in the comfort of their home as an audio-only experience. Adding another form of stimuli rocked pop culture.

With that said, adding another channel experience to your content doesn’t need to be a massive culture shift.

It can also be added to surprise and delight the consumer. That’s the perfect description of how I felt when I first learned that CD jackets had all the lyrics and notes from the musician on the inside.

7. Content Is Part of Culture

Entertainment content is the best proof there is on how content is part of a larger culture.

Your content and marketing don’t exist in a vacuum, separate and apart from what’s going on in the world and your industry.

You can serve your audience and brand better when you’re tuned in to what’s going on.
