You remember Bob Borchers. What’s that, name doesn’t ring a bell? Borchers’ was the anonymous Apple marketing guy who hosted the original, 24-minute iPhone guided tour video back in June of 2007 when the device first came out.

Yes, it was only a few years ago, long before “There’s an app for that,” that Apple felt compelled to do a rather lengthy promo video to explain just what the heck the iPhone was.

In addition to heading worldwide product marketing for the iPhone, Borchers also spearheaded the Nike+iPod partnership and Apple’s iPod integration efforts with major auto companies. His almost five year tenure at Apple continued up through the recent launch of the iPhone 3GS. Earlier he held senior marketing positions at Nokia and Nike.

Now he’s a partner at venture firm Opus Capital. I caught up with him at the GigaOm Mobilize conference where, unleashed from Apple’s traditional stranglehold on employee’s speaking to the media, he was happy to discuss his time there and trends in the marketplace.

Even his hiring was tinged with secrecy. Borchers says he had no idea what he was being hired to work on. But after he got there, Apple let him know they were working on a new device, the iPhone.

“The good news is that you came away from every meeting with decisions being made; there was no paralysis by analysis.”

Selling a $500 phone

When the iPhone launched with a $500 price, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said his first reaction was “that is the most expensive phone in the world and it doesn’t appeal to business customers because it doesn’t have a keyboard.” Later he said, “it may sell very well.”

Nice save!

Borchers, as it turns out, had experience selling much more expensive phones when he did marketing for Nokia’s Vertu line of luxury phones. These babies sell for anywhere from $3,000 to $100,000! One example, Nokia says its diamond-laced Signature Diamond phone is “Assembled by hand in a process so complex that it takes even experts up to three years to learn.”

Perhaps after that, pitching a $500 phone didn’t seem very daunting. He says one his goals at Apple was to establish in people’s minds that the iPhone was more than just another product, and something a consumer would be happy to pay more than a hundred bucks to own. Mission accomplished.

“Steve (Jobs) realized no one loved their phone,” says Borchers. “The goal was to make the iPhone irresistible and make the customers give the most effective demos. We deliberately never called it a smartphone because we don’t want to be part of what that was.”

Palm and Apple and who else?

He also believes Apple’s other edge is a long held marketing strategy it shares with his previous employer Nike — complete disdain for market research in devising new products.

“As a company, and I think Apple gets this better than anyone, you want to follow what Wayne Gretsky said about hockey: skate to where the puck will be, not where it is.”

In other words, rather than survey customers on what they want, Apple (and Jobs in particular) is more inclined to follow his gut as to what consumers want, even if they don’t know it already.

Borchers says he’d like to see more such forward thinking when it comes to mobility in the enterprise. “We’re still in ‘Enterprise 1.0’. The devices are trying to replicate what’s on the desktop. But what I want on a mobile device or phone isn’t a mini-Salesforce, I want something designed for the device from the start.”

With the economy still struggling, he says the right investments in mobile today could pay off big time as the economy improves and consumers and businesses gain more buying power.

“People say, ‘Is venture dead?’ No, what I see is a flight to quality.”

Opus Capital has a somewhat unique approach in that it doesn’t target market segments but rather smart people, ideas and opportunities.

“The last thing we want is someone who says something like ‘This is a software-as-a-service company.’ We look for great teams and ideas. Over the course of 5-to-7 years a successful venture will probably have changed quite a bit from the original idea.”

Google Pixel 4 Leak Looks Shockingly Like Iphone 11

Google Pixel 4 leak looks shockingly like iPhone 11

Images of the Goole Pixel 4 appeared today in a series that should remind you of another notably leaked phone this Summer season. The angle of the round corners, the shape of the hardware, the extreme similarities in placement, size, and possibly internal structure of camera modules… all of this says iPhone. But this is no iPhone, said this tipster, this is a new Pixel 4.

The tipster that showed the Google Pixel 4 today generally has leaks that are to be trusted. The images come from OnLeaks, a notoriously accurate early-info leaker presented these images with Pricebaba, and OnLeaks usually works with CAD files that otherwise go to case-makers (and the like). But this time things are a little different.

This time the information comes with an additional disclaimer on the part of the leakster. This time it would seem that there’s a little bit more hesitancy than normal when it comes to these images being the final-final versions of the phone. Per OnLeaks, these aren’t necessarily the same CAD drawings normally used, these are “based upon early prototyping schematics.”

The hesitant nature of the leak may be because the imagery popped up so early. These phones don’t normally hit the racks until October each year. Or at least they’ve not been revealed until around October in the first three years they’ve been shown by Google.

There’s also the fact that OnLeaks doesn’t work with photos of the original device, only schematics of the exteriors. This means that he’s seeing the features that are relevant to an accessory-maker, so some items of interest are hidden. The sensors, for example, aren’t necessarily shown in the CAD drawings, so they’re not pictured in the renderings made by OnLeaks.

The same is true of the camera lenses. Because the backside camera array uses one big piece of glass to protect multiple lenses, the original creator of the phone schematics does not need to show the case-maker what’s inside. They don’t need to show what’s under the glass, because the case-maker shouldn’t need to decide what to cover up and what to reveal – the whole array is protected without need for a case.

The frontside MIGHT have a notch, it might not. It could just be that the case-maker should assume that the whole frontside should remain unprotected, much like it was with the Pixel 3 XL, which also had a notch. One big pane of glass there, too.

We’ll keep investigating here – this is a strange sort of situation, and not one we’ll be easing up on any time soon. The Google Pixel’s been the most major single-camera phone player in the game for the last couple years – more than one camera now seems strange.

We’ll still be expecting the Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4 XL to come in October, for reveal at least. Release dates for the Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4 XL will likely happen in late October 2023 or early November – we’ll see!

Sharp Back Pain: Stabbing Pain In Back

A sudden sharp pain in the back can stop anyone in their tracks and the cause of a sudden sharp back pain or acute back pain is not always obvious. Different muscles, bones and connective tissues meet in the back; thus, individuals may experience back pain for a wide range of reasons.

The majority of people experience sharp back pain in the lower back as compared to the upper back. There are many common and less-common causes of sharp back pain, and they may be both mechanical and medical.

Sharp Back Pain: Common Causes

Sharp back pain which is caused by a mechanical problem with the bones, disks, ligaments, or muscles of the back is one of the most common types of back pain. Some of the most specific causes for acute or sharp back pain may include the following −

Muscle Spasm

It refers to prolonged contraction or stiffening of the back muscles, which are a result of trauma or repetitive strain. A muscle spasm can produce sharp back pain in either the upper or lower back.

A muscle strain or spasm might occur due to a simple action like suddenly bending down to pick something up or twisting while holding a heavy object. A sharp back pain due to muscle strain may cause a burning or tingling sensation or a radiating ache, especially in the lower back.

Slipped Disk

Slipped disk is also called a bulging disk, herniated disk, ruptured disk or pinched nerve. It occurs from the improper lifting of heavy objects or overly strenuous activity. One of the most common symptoms of a slipped disk is sciatica which occurs when sharp back pain shoots down through the buttocks into the legs.

Pain from sciatica may build up over time or come severely at once. It may vary from a dull ache or severe tearing to a burning feeling. The pain may be warm or sharp and may radiate from one side of the lower back down to the hip or buttocks.

Compression Fracture

It is a fracture of the vertebrae which are commonly known as spine bones. This fracture can be a result of trauma or osteoporosis (weakened bones) where the pain is often very sharp.

Osteomyelitis

When the vertebrae themselves are infected, this condition is called osteomyelitis. It is a very rare vertebrae infection where back pain is generally accompanied by fever and other symptoms.

Other Causes of Sharp Back Pain

The rupture of the main artery in the abdomen which is called a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm may cause sharp back pain. Moreover, pyelonephritis, which is a kidney infection and pleurisy, which is an infection of the lining of the lungs and chest, may mimic back pain.

Additionally, there might be other symptoms that may call for immediate medical attention such as back pain with fever, numbness or tingling, acute pains in the extremities or groin or pelvis, progressive weakness, pain when coughing or urinating, difficulty in walking and loss of bowel or bladder control.

Pain in the lower back may occur from an injury. However, it may be a symptom of a chronic issue like incorrect posture, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, ankylosing spondylitis, kidney infection, arthritis, fibromyalgia or spinal cancer. Furthermore, in women, lower back pain might occur due to ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids and ovarian cancer.

If a person is diagnosed with any of these infections, appropriate treatment of the underlying cause may resolve the back pain. One must consult a doctor immediately if back pain occurs with any of the above-mentioned symptoms.

Remedies for Sharp Back Pain

Sharp lower back pain is one of the common sources of discomfort for people which may develop after doing strenuous activities like weightlifting, making a quick twisting or jerking motion involving the back.

The severity of the back pain and the level of injury may decide the medications or the type of treatment. Muscle spasms usually respond well to rest and hence, avoiding physical activity for a few days may heal the affected muscles. However, after a few days of rest, engaging in some physical activity under the guidance of a physical therapist can help strengthen the muscles.

Applying hot or cold packs may help cure symptoms like swelling and pain. Using a cold pack for 20 minutes for the first few days and later on, using a heat pack for a similar duration may help relax the tense muscles and promote blood circulation.

Sciatica may improve without medical treatment within four to six weeks, but if the pain persists, one may have to consult a healthcare provider. A doctor can prescribe pain relievers and suggest physical therapy to treat sciatica pain. Surgical procedures may include lumbar decompression surgery and microdiscectomy for curing sciatica pain.

Some Over-the-Counter (OTC) pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, steroid injections and other anti-inflammatory medications may help relieve pain. Most often, minor cases of sharp back pain resolve by themselves, but some may need doctor’s treatment and physical therapy to strengthen the muscles and prevent future injury.

Conclusion

There may be many causes of sharp back pain and most of them could be treated with simple remedies. But, if the home remedies do not work and the pain continues, one must consult a doctor and determine the exact cause. Doctors may prescribe the right medicines and suggest appropriate treatment to cure sharp back pain as per the causes and you can get back to your daytoday activities without any further delay.

Back Camera Not Working On Android And Iphone? Try These 8 Fixes

If you are an influencer or social media fanatic, your day probably won’t pass without using the camera. However, sometimes it may disappoint you with frequent crashes or freezing.

Generally, you experience these problems due to software bugs. However, some hardware failures and defects in the camera component can also lead to this issue. If it’s a software issue, you can get rid of such issues by simply restarting or updating the device. Otherwise, hardware issues may require some special attention.

There can be many causes behind your camera not working on your devices. A few most probable causes are mentioned below.

Software Bugs

Camera lenses are blocked

Hardware Damage

A problem within the camera app

The first thing you need to do is inspect your Back Camera. If it has any sort of hardware issue, it can lead to issues with your camera. After ensuring that there is no hardware damage force close all the apps from the background and launch the camera app again. Moreover, you can also remove the phone case if it’s blocking the camera and see if it’s working again.

Your camera app might not work properly due to some bugs. However, by simply restarting the device, it can be solved. When you restart, all the currently running background data will be stopped, forcing the device to start fresh in the memory.

On Android

On iOS

The camera won’t work unless you give the camera permission to run it. The camera app may open, but it will get stuck and ask you to grant permission. You can enable the permission by going to the device’s settings.

On Android

On iOS

The camera will forcibly stop working on its own or display a warning message if your device gets hot when you use the camera for a long time in a hot and humid place while recording at a high resolution like 4K.

The best option to resolve this would be to turn off your device, take off the case, and take it to a cool place like the AC Room or in front of the fan. Therefore, in that case, you have no other choice than to cool down your device before you can use the camera.

Your device’s storage also plays an important role in camera functionality. If you run out of space, the camera can open but won’t be able to take a photo or video. Due to insufficient space, a basic app like a camera also frequently crashes or fails to load.

Therefore, you need at least a few GBs of free storage to handle and run the tasks of your device. You can delete or uninstall the data/files to make a new space.

On Android

On iOS

This is another way to resolve the camera not working if it’s related to software-related issues. When you clear the data, it will reset the camera, which can also fix the issues. Therefore, test it on your device and see if this method might work for you. However, if you are an iPhone user, you can’t clear the data on it.

On Android

Have you tried opening the camera from the third-party apps? If not, you should try it because it can give you an idea of whether it’s the fault of the default camera or the physical camera itself is malfunctioning. You can try the camera apps like Google Camera, VSCO, Open Camera, etc.

However, you should not totally rely on third-party apps. When downloading such camera apps, only install which you have tested or have proven safety records because some of the apps can contain viruses, which can steal your personal information.

As mentioned earlier, your camera may not work due to software bugs. However, if the issue is minor, it could be fixed with a simple reboot or clearing the data, but if it didn’t get fixed with it, you should update your device.

Thus, if the new update is available for your device, you should install it and see if the camera issues are fixed.

On Android

On iOS

This may be the last option you can do on your own to fix the camera issues. When you reset, it will wipe out all of the data. Therefore, you should first make a backup of your important files and then only reset them. There’s a possibility that it could work for you unless your camera has physical issues.

On Android

On iOS

If none of the above methods work, your camera might have hardware damage. For that, you need to visit your official manufacturing repair center. If you are under warranty and the problem didn’t arise from your side, they may exchange or repair it for free, depending on the conditions.

If the warranty is expired, they may take charge based on a problem. Visiting the repair center will also be a good choice because they will inspect your device from hardware and software to troubleshoot the issues.

Back Up Your Web E

Yes, we know–it’s hard enough to remember to back up your desktop, your laptop, your smartphone, and your tablet, and now we want you to think about backing up your cloud-based e-mail account, too.

The recent Gmail outage may have ended happily, but it still should be a wake-up call for anyone who relies too heavily on the cloud. The time to back up your Web-based e-mail is now.

Gmail

Google’s Gmail gives you plenty of space–over 7.5GB of space, actually–to store thousands of e-mail messages, but that doesn’t mean you should put all of your e-mail eggs in one basket. Fortunately, you have a simple, free way to back up your Gmail account in one fell swoop: Gmail Backup.

Gmail Backup works with both Windows and Linux. Here’s how to back up your Gmail in just a few minutes:

1. Download and install Gmail Backup. The install is quick and painless, and leaves you with a Start menu shortcut and a desktop icon.

I tried Gmail Backup, just to make sure it really is as simple as it sounds–and it is. I was able to download messages from one account and “restore” them to another account, and Gmail Backup kept all of my labels (including ‘Inbox’ and ‘Sent’) and attachments. Gmail Backup can’t support characters that are not alphabetical or numerical (such as a forward slash or an asterisk) in labels, but aside from that little glitch (just rework your labels before backing up), this is a shockingly easy way to make a hard-drive backup of your Gmail account.

Hotmail

Unfortunately, no “Hotmail Backup” exists for non-Gmail users. However, you can use a free application that’s pretty easy to set up: MailStore Home. A Windows-only backup utility, MailStore Home lets you back up and restore both Web-based and desktop-based e-mail.

Sure, MailStore Home requires a little more setup than Gmail Backup’s “enter your password and go” approach (you have to set up a POP3 account), but it’s a smooth and easy tool to use. Not only can you see your messages in the MailStore Home desktop client, but you can also back up your files to a CD, DVD, or USB drive.

MailStore Home keeps your folders and labels intact, and can also run in increments (it skips over messages that it has already archived).

Also, although I admittedly have fewer e-mail messages on my Hotmail account than I do on my Gmail account, MailStore Home seems to be quicker than Gmail Backup (and, yes, you can use MailStore Home to back up Gmail as well).

Yahoo Mail

If you’re cheap (as I am), here’s how to back up your Yahoo Mail without dropping that $20.

1. Download and install Zimbra Desktop, which is a free desktop mail client that works with Yahoo Mail, Gmail, and Hotmail.

5. You’ll get a zipped file (.TGZ), which you can open with WinRAR. All of your messages save in .EML files, which you can open with a desktop e-mail program (such as Outlook or Thunderbird). You can also import this zipped file into Zimbra Desktop, and your messages will be recovered; once your messages are restored to Zimbra Desktop, the utility will sync with the server, and your Yahoo Mail account will be back on its feet.

Zimbra isn’t as easy to use as Gmail Backup or MailStore Home are, but it is an effective way to back up your Yahoo Mail–for free. Zimbra Desktop retains folders and attachments, and can even “back up” your contacts and calendar.

Amazon Looks To Move Security Appliances To The Cloud, Says Ciso

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking to expand its security offerings with hosted intrusion protection appliances and more extensive encryption features, as it looks to increase the level of protection users can get in its cloud.

For Amazon, proving its cloud computing platform can offer the same level of security as traditional hardware and software has been an ongoing challenge.

That it’s difficult for companies to meet their existing security requirements in the cloud is a common misconception, according to Stephen Schmidt, chief information security officer at Amazon Web Services.

“For example, they are concerned about access control; network perimeter device control; and the ability to construct networks in ways that are consistent with their particular compliance or enforcement requirements. In most cases we find that not only can they do what they are doing right now in the cloud, but have more granular controls,” Schmidt said.

There is also a misconception about separation of computing resources in the cloud, according to Schmidt.

“Some people have written academic papers that say it is theoretically possible to, for instance, have maybe a side-channel between hypervisors … where you could pass information between virtual machines. The important thing about that is that those are academic papers set in a laboratory environment, as opposed to in the real world,” Schmidt said.

The Virtual Private Cloud service, which lets users configure a logically isolated section of Amazon’s cloud, completely negates that threat, according to Schmidt.

Security appliances in the cloud

The company is now working with partners to let enterprises move security appliances to the cloud, including virtual appliances for intrusion detection and prevention. The move to the cloud will be a boon for enterprises that are concerned about denial-of-service attacks that rely on using a lot bandwidth, according to Schmidt.

“Obviously individual companies can’t afford to have the kind of connectivity to the Internet that we can. Furthermore, they don’t necessarily have the network expertise to mitigate large scale attacks whereas we do,” he said.

Amazon will expand on the ways encryption can be used to help protect information, as well

“I think in the short term you’ll see us enabling encryption on smaller and more granular pieces of data,” Schmidt said.

Amazon’s road to improve encryption functionality has already started with the recent addition of Oracle Transparent Data Encryption to its Relational Database Service (RDS), and with the introduction of CloudHSM, a service that uses a separate appliance to protect cryptographic keys used for encryption.

“You can see there is a theme here. Give the customers the tools to create an encryption infrastructure that allows them to ensure only the people they want to, whether it’s in their organization or ours, have access to that data,” Schmidt said.

Certifications

A key part of Amazon’s security efforts has been getting various kinds of certifications.

“For some industries it is an absolute must-have. For instance, for chúng tôi to move onto AWS we had to be PCI compliant, because of the credit card transaction volumes. For U.S. government organizations to move into AWS, we had to be compliant with their rules and regimes and for the U.K. government we had to be compliant with theirs,” Schmidt said.

For organizations where compliance isn’t a must then certifications, including ISO 27001, still work as a way for them to understand how Amazon practises security, according to Schmidt.

One certification Amazon is still working on is Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), a government program that aims to standardize security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud services, according to Amazon.

“It is an evolving process. The U.S. government hasn’t quite decided what it wants to do with FedRAMP, and it keeps changing some of the evaluation criteria, but hopefully that will be settled soon because we are really looking forward to that one,” Schmidt said.

Government organizations and agencies can rely on FedRAMP instead of doing their own evaluations, resulting in cost savings and uniform evaluations. Today some organizations are more capable of performing a good review than others are, but the FedRAMP program will iron out those differences and raise the security bar across the government space, according to Schmidt.
