Suggested January 2024 How To Speed Up Chrome With 6 Easy Tricks

But that doesn’t mean you can’t crank even more speed out of Chrome if you fancy it. Here are the best ways to speed up the already-speedy browser.

1. Clear the Chrome Cache

Your cache is generally designed to make pages load quicker by storing crucial information about them on your PC, then pulling it up each time you return to that page. But if you don’t maintain it, it can get filled with outdated cache information for certain sites, which then prevents the up-to-date site information from taking its place. Clearing your cache can therefore help speed up Chrome.

To clear your cache, carry out the following steps:

1. In Chrome either press Ctrl + Shift + Del on your keyboard or type chrome://settings/clearBrowserDatainto the address bar.

2. Suspend Tabs You’re Not Using

Over the years the amount of tabs we simultaneously leave open has ballooned into the double figures. With higher-resolution monitors capable of displaying more info on-screen, and the option of multiple desktops these days, why not?

You can read more about our favorite Chrome flags here.

3. Compress Sites as They Load

If you’re using a PC, there’s a good chance you’re in a position where you don’t need to worry too much about how much data you’re using each month. But data-saving can also have the desirable effect of speeding up Chrome.

4. Use an Ad-Blocker

This isn’t just for the reason that they’re ugly, annoying, and sometimes have the cheek to take up your entire screen, but they force your browser to load more elements which puts strain on your PC.

5. Turn on Hardware Acceleration

The graphics card in your computer – whether a rudimentary integrated one or the latest nVidia beast – is an invaluable part of keeping your browsing zippy. In Chrome you can use “hardware acceleration” to utilize your graphics card power for more graphically intensive browser processes.

If you’re interested, you can have a look at what aspects of Chrome hardware acceleration are affected by going to chrome://gpu/.

6. Use Chrome Task Manager to Disable Unnecessary Processes/Extensions

Implementing just one of these settings might not have a profound impact on your browser, but add them together and you’ll start to see the benefits. If you follow these tips, then you’re clearly someone who cares about the speed of your browser anyway and probably already do your due diligence in not having too many extensions, tabs and so on straining Chrome.

How To Speed Up Windows 11 And Improve Performance

Windows 11 is finally out for the general users and has brought along a number of new features. You can easily customize the Start menu, or edit the Taskbar‘s look. There’s also a refreshingly new UI, and a lot more. The performance department has also seen some improvements as Microsoft has improved memory management, disk usage, app prioritization, and several other factors related to CPU and battery performance. But, not all’s well if you have an old laptop running the new Windows version. Hence, there’s a need to optimize Windows 11. In this article, just like we detailed how to speed up Windows 10, we bring to you another tutorial on how to speed up Windows 11 and improve the performance significantly.

Speed Up Windows 11 with These Easy Steps (2023)

We have a number of options that you can try to make Windows 11 faster on your device. You can expand the table below and move to any relevant section to know more.

Best Ways to Make Windows 11 Faster

In case the system is up-to-date, there’s no harm in restarting it. This can help with random one-off issues that sometimes slow down your PC. One thing worth noting is that this is a temporary fix and you might need to look into more settings to avoid these problems from occurring again.

2. Disable Startup Programs/Apps

Tap on the Start menu and select Task Manager. This can also be done by using the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Shift + Esc.”

Now, select the Startup option where you will find the programs that can be disbled.

Apart from that, there are various startup apps such as Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, and Skype that can hog the resources during startup. Here’s how to fix this:

Once there, turn off all the apps that you don’t want to run during startup. It’s that simple.

As you install more apps over time, this list will keep growing. So, keep in mind that you should do this every so often to ensure no unwanted apps are launching at startup and slowing down Windows 11.

3. Debloat Windows 11

The best part is that it also adjusts your privacy settings and stops all kinds of telemetry services in the background that are responsible for eating most of the system resources.

4. Change Power Mode 5. Defragment Hard Disk

With time, files on the hard disk can become scattered and this can also slow down performance of your system. To solve the issue, you can defragment the hard disk via the defragment tool.

Note: Keep in mind, if you are using an SSD then defragmentation is not recommended. It will reduce your SSD’s life.

Tap on the Windows icon and go for the Defragment and Optimize Drives option.

Select the drive that you want to defrag. After that, tap on the Optimize option to complete the process.

6. Add More Memory on Windows 11 (RAM/SSD Upgrade)

Increasing the RAM of a computer can help improve its performance and make it faster. You can also consider switching to an SSD if you are using a PC with a hard drive. Believe me, the difference in performance is simply day and night. I have been using an SSD on a 3rd-gen Intel i3 processor and Windows 11 runs flawlessly. A typical 5400 RPM hard drive has a read/write speed of 100MBps whereas a SATA SSD offers a read/write speed of 500MBps. It’s a massive jump of 5x and you will experience the change in boot time, app opening, and overall interaction with OS elements.

If you are using an older desktop or laptop then you can check out some of the best SSDs to buy. So, to make Windows 11 run faster after all the software optimization even on dated processors, you should get an SSD. I would go as far as to say that you should not be using Windows on an HDD!

7. Disable Restartable Apps

So, to disable restartable apps, just follow the steps below.

Open Settings and head to the Accounts section.

Select the Sign-in options.

Now, disable the toggle for “Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in” and it’s done.

8. Uninstall Unwanted Software/Bloatware

Removing unwanted files and bloatware can also help you make Windows 11 fast. And this involves a few simple steps to follow.

Tap on the Windows icon and go for the Settings option.

You will now find the list of apps and remove the unwanted ones by tapping on the three-dotted menu and selecting the Uninstall option.

9. Delete Temporary Files

Another thing you can do is remove temporary files. These are the files that get stored on the PC or the laptop when apps perform tasks, for smooth functioning. However, these files aren’t too essential and can end up occupying a lot of space. You can follow these steps to remove them, and in turn, improve Windows 11 performance.

Press ‘Windows+X‘ and tap on the Run option. You can also use the hotkey Windows+R to get the option directly.

Type “%temp%” and select OK.

You will now be taken to the temporary files folder. Just select them all and delete them.

Do note that you can also use the inbuilt Disk Cleanup app to easily clean temporary files off your hard disk.

10. Free Up Disk Space

So if you have made up your mind and want to stick to Windows 11, you can follow our guide and free up disk space on Windows 11. Even if you don’t want to delete Windows 10 files, you can still remove temporary files that don’t have any use on Windows 11. Just follow our guide and you will find Windows 11 performance has improved by leaps and bounds.

11. Use Storage Sense to Make Windows 11 Faster

In addition to this, you can also enable Storage Sense, which automatically cleans up Windows 11 from time to time. To enable it, follow the steps below.

12. Disable Animations and Visual Effects

We know some of the best features of Windows 11 are smooth animations, acrylic blur, transparent UI elements, etc. These new UI changes really give a fresh makeover to Windows 11. But again, all these fancy animations come at a cost, especially if you don’t have a dedicated GPU. So if you want Windows 11 to focus on performance rather than on looks, you can adjust the settings accordingly. Here’s what to do:

Open Settings and navigate to Personalization.

Tap on the Colors options. Here, disable the toggle for “Transparency effects.”

After that, move to Accessibility from the sidebar.

Now, select the Visual effects option and disable “Transparency effects” and “Animation effects.”

13. Disable Notifications and Tips

To help improve your usage, you will often receive notifications and tips and tricks to go about. For this, the PC is scanned, which might end up impacting its performance. Disabling them can prove helpful. Here’s how to disable notifications and tips in Windows 11.

Select the Notifications option. There you will find two options: “Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device” and “Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device.” Disable both of them.

14. Disable Background apps

Select “Advanced options” and scroll down a bit to get to the Background apps permissions option. Select Never to complete the task.

15. Disable VBS (For Gamers)

Virtualization-based security (VBS) is a new feature on Windows 11 that protects the OS from unsafe code and malware. It’s part of the Hypervisor-Enforced Code Integrity (HVCI) layer. But recent reports suggest that due to this security feature, games have seen a performance drop of 5% to 25%. Even Microsoft suggests that gaming laptops “may choose to ship with HVCI disabled”. So if you are a gamer and want the best performance on Windows 11, you can just disable VBS.

To do so, press the Windows key once and search for “Core Isolation.”

Open it and disable the toggle straight away. Once done, restart the PC and you are done.

16. Disable Game Mode

If you are not a gamer, it’s best to disable the Game Mode altogether. It will stop DVR and other Xbox-related services in the background, speeding up your Windows 11 PC.

For this, open Settings and head to “Gaming.”

Open “Game Mode” and disable the toggle.

Similarly, open “Xbox Game Bar” and “Captures” and disable all the toggles under both the menus.

17. Don’t Install a Third Party Antivirus Software

It’s a common misconception to install a third-party antivirus on Windows 11 and 10. Yes, there was a time when you needed a dedicated antivirus program to block malware and viruses. However, Microsoft has upped the game on the security front and its built-in Windows Security (also called Windows Defender) is more than enough to protect your Windows 11 PC. Microsoft updates the virus definitions regularly and in my usage, it has proven to be a reliable antivirus.

Note: Anti-virus software are useful in certain specific use-cases. Moreover, if users are accessing shady websites, they should preferably use a good anti-virus software to protect their PC

Meanwhile, make sure to check for viruses regularly, because they can hamper the performance of your PC and pose security risks. Windows 11 has inbuilt virus protection that can help you get rid of them.

Head to the Start menu. Open Settings and then go to Privacy & Security.

Once opened, head to the Virus & threat protection option, check for updates, and run a quick scan. This helps in improving the PC performance and keeps you protected as well.

Why is Windows 11 Slowing Down?

There can be numerous reasons for a slowed-down Windows 11 PC or laptop despite the major Windows 11 upgrade. Whether it’s an old PC/laptop or issues with the hard disk, there are some things you can do to improve Windows performance on your computer. So, let’s take a look at how to speed up Windows 11.

How to speed up Windows 11 PC for gaming?

If you’re a gamer and you want to speed up Windows 11 for gaming purposes, you should disable VBS on your PC. You can check out the steps to disable VBS on Windows 11 above.

Improve Windows 11 Performance With Ease

These are some of the ways that can help you speed up Windows 11. There are a few other tips that you can follow to keep Windows 11 fast. This can be done by un-syncing OneDrive, troubleshooting Windows 11, and more. Note that I have not suggested modifying any Registry settings as they may break some of the Windows components. The Debloater script does most of the job and removes unnecessary packages without manually tweaking the Registry.

The 15 Best Ways To Speed Up Windows 10

These days, Windows 10 runs well on almost any computer you can buy, but that doesn’t mean you’re always going to get snappy performance. If Windows 10 is taking its time, why not try some of these ways to speed up Windows 10?

1. Reboot Your Computer

It’s easy to keep a Windows session going for days, weeks or even months. Windows is just that stable these days. That’s great, but the downside is that apps can slowly start clogging things up by not playing nice with memory and CPU resources. If your Windows computer is sluggish, first try turning the computer off and on again to see if it helps.

2. Use an SSD

While it’s going to cost you a little money, one of the biggest speed boosts you can give to Windows is installing it on a Solid State Drive (SSD). These drives are many times faster than mechanical spinning hard drives.

You don’t need to spend a fortune either. If cost is a concern, consider buying a relatively small SSD (e.g. 250GB) and then using it as your Windows install drive along with a few of your core applications. On almost any computer, swapping to an SSD brings instant and dramatic speed improvements.

SSDs can be a little complicated, so we have some recommended reading for you before you whip out your credit card. Check out SATA 3 vs M.2 vs NVMe, SSD Buying Guide and Everything You Need To Know About SSD Wear & Tear.

3. Install More RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is the fast working memory space of your computer. When there isn’t enough of it to contain all of your active application and operating system data, Windows is forced to swap data in RAM to and from your hard drive. This is one of the biggest performance disasters a computer can encounter, slowing everything to a painful crawl. The most straightforward solution is to add more RAM to your system.

First, familiarize yourself with Windows’ RAM requirements to make sure you have enough. Also, check the RAM requirements of the applications you want to run at the same time to get an idea of how much RAM you need.

You may not actually have to spend money on an upgrade just yet, try the suggestions in 7 Ways to Clear Memory and Boost RAM on Windows and How to Allocate More RAM to Specific Apps in Windows.

4. Tune Your Paging File for Better Performance

If you have to rely on a RAM paging file for your current workload and things are slowing down far too much, you should consider optimizing your paging file. Luckily we have a simple guide on how to do it, so head over to How To Optimize The Paging File In Windows and spend some time getting the right balance of paging file size.

5. Run Disk Cleanup

There are many nooks and crannies where random trash accumulates on your hard drive. These temporary files can slow down your system long after your need for them is gone, but manually finding and removing them would be quite the chore. Instead, try running Disk Cleanup to automatically find and remove these files. We have a guide for disk cleanup at How to Run Disk Cleanup in Windows 10.

6. Change Windows Performance Settings

Windows has a lot of attractive visual settings, but they come at a price! On lower-end computers turning off some or all of the Windows visual decorations can free up system resources:

Open the Start Menu and select the settings cog icon.

Select System.

Select About.

Select Advanced System Settings.

Select Settings under Performance and then Adjust for best performance.

Select OK.

Now Windows won’t be quite as flashy, but it should be faster.

7. Streamline Your Startup Applications

With every restart of Windows, there’s probably a long list of applications waiting to be run at startup. Many of these can have a massive impact on how long it takes before you can start using your PC. It’s a good idea to go through all of the apps that are set to start automatically with Windows and disable the ones you don’t need. Have a look at How to Disable Or Change Startup Programs In Windows 10.

8. Enable High Performance

Windows is a very power-conscious operating system and may be limiting your computer’s performance to save battery power or reduce your monthly electricity bill. However, if your system is plugged in at the wall, why not unlock its full potential? All you have to do is :

Open the Start Menu and select the settings cog icon.

Select System.

Select Power & Sleep.

Select Additional Power Settings.

Select High Performance.

Your computer will now be given as much power as it needs to reach its peak performance.

9. Enable Fast Booting in the BIOS

Most motherboards have a fast booting option toggle that you can use to cut down on the number of things the BIOS does at startup and to remove any artificial delays, such as the one that waits for you to press the button that launches the BIOS. Check your motherboard manual for specific details on how to do it on your system.

10. Use Sleep or Hibernation

Instead of turning your computer off completely, consider using either sleep or hibernation modes, which are both faster to start from than a cold boot. If you don’t know what either of these modes is, please read What Is the Difference Between Sleep and Hibernate in Windows 10?

11. Pause or Stop Cloud Apps From Syncing

Cloud apps such as OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox are convenient ways to backup and share files on your computer, but if they are using your disk while you try to do something else it can cause performance issues.

So if you’re running any of these or similar cloud-sync applications on your computer consider disabling auto-sync or scheduling syncing overnight when you’re not trying to use the computer.

For an example of how this works, check out How To Disable OneDrive On Your Windows 10 PC.

12. Disable Search Indexing

In order to ensure that you get instant search results in Windows, there’s a file indexing program running in the background at certain intervals. On some computers search indexing can cause performance issues, but you can disable it without much trouble. Just read Turn Off Indexing in Windows for Better Performance for the details.

13. Check for Malware

There are all sorts of malware that can bring your computer to a halt, so it’s always a good idea to run antivirus and antimalware software to rule out malicious software as the culprit behind a laggy Windows experience. If you aren’t sure how to do that, read How to Remove Malware Completely With Free Tools.

14. Update Your Drivers

Incorrect or outdated drivers can often be the culprit behind bad performance. Manually checking that your drivers are up to date is a pain, so you’ll probably want to read our guide on how to automate device driver updates.

15. Disable Background Apps

If your computer isn’t particularly high-end, then programs running the background can eat into your hardware performance pool. To disable background apps:

Open the Start Menu and select the settings cog icon.

Select Privacy.

Select Background apps.

Either toggle all background apps off or do it for individual apps you don’t need.

For most modern computers you don’t need to do this, but on severely constrained machines it’s one of those small performance boosts that can really add up in the end.

How To Stay Caught Up With The Curriculum

You mention to a fellow teacher during lunch or after a faculty meeting how far along you are in the curriculum and they respond, “Oh, I’m way past that.” Gulp. Not what you were looking to hear, right?

Around this time of year, the truth is, I hear a lot of anguished statements from teachers who I support, like, “I’m already behind,” “things are taking too long,” and, “I’ve got to pick up the pace.”

First off, curriculum “races” among teachers are just as common as fishing stories. To compare is to despair, I say, and the key to avoiding such despair? Stay focused on the talents and strengths of your group of learners, as well as your talents and strengths as their guide and teacher.

So why are so many teachers already feeling like this so early in the year?

One reason could be pacing plans that are sometimes used as mandates rather than guides, and are created by people outside of your school (down at the district, or maybe even in another state). And let’s be honest, the authors are not always teachers. Possibly once they were in the classroom, but they’ve since forgotten that learning goes way beyond just covering an enormous amount of material. Real learning that sticks takes doing — practicing, applying, and experiencing — and reflecting.

So, consider quitting the covering curriculum contest, take a deep breath and enjoy teaching again. I promise your students will enjoy learning that much more. Hey, they may even do better on the state exam.

In the Classroom

Let’s talk practical now. Yes, as teachers, the reality is we do have a lot to teach in one year and we want our students to transition effortlessly to the next grade and be thoroughly prepared. This means identifying exactly what students need to know and be able to do when they exit your classroom in June.

Setting Goals for Learning

Start by creating learning objectives for each unit (remember, learning objectives are measurable and include outcomes). Then, strategically plan and sequence your lessons. Rigor in the classroom is important, but you don’t want to leave your students in the dust, so be sure to check for understanding along the way.

If an activity, class or homework assignment is not directly connected to your learning objectives, you probably need to eliminate it. Simply put, cut out all the fluff. To do this, you will have to take a close look at those activities you’ve possibly been doing for years and decide if they are really necessary (even if it’s that character collage, or science inquiry poster the kids absolutely love making). Or, you can create an abridged version of the project, or make it extra credit to be done at home.

Also, keep this in mind when warding off that little demon called time: If it’s important work but doesn’t need teacher guidance or peer support, send it home to be completed independently.

Seek the Sages

If you frequently find yourself running out of time, your instruction might be more activity based than learning goals based. One suggestion: consider reaching out to the teachers you admire at your school site (or those master teachers you’ve heard about at other sites). Why re-invent the wheel when you can get your hands on finely tuned, engaging lessons and projects that they’ve been creating for years, and that address the learners in your community. (If you have these lessons, please share with your colleagues and especially those new teachers in your building. They need your help and your expertise!)

Modify, Accommodate, and Move On

When students are struggling to comprehend new ideas and material, and the content is crucial to achieving the learning goals for the unit, find reading material that is an easier reading level so they can access the important information. Also think of other ways the students can learn the content and concepts: a brief documentary clip and discussion, a simulation, a Q&A with an expert (possibly via Skype).

If a small group of kids are still having a hard time with that new concept or content, don’t stop to re-teach the whole class or slow the instructional pace (this will lead to twenty or more restless, bored students). Instead, move on, but do re-teach and modify the assignment for that handful either after school or while the class is working independently (check out my post on differentiated instruction here).

Depth over Breadth

After you have decided on learning objectives and chosen material, dig in rather than gliding over. This will take a change in pace, but sometimes you have to slow down to go quickly. What does that mean? As we’ve established, there’s a tendency and quite a bit of pressure these days to cover heaps of material, and quickly — breadth over depth. That means teachers are being put in the situation to tell rather than show, and therefore students are forced to be passive rather than doers and creators.

Simply covering material is not teaching; it’s checking off a list. If we focus more on getting through the curriculum than on creating meaningful and enriching educational experiences, we forget such vital parts of our job, such as checking for understanding, re-teaching, and reviewing.

If you find yourself telling and rushing much more than showing and creating opportunities for students to discover, check out a diagram of Dale’s Cone of Experience here. It gives a strong argument for diving in and allowing kids to discover, experience, discuss, and reflect. This is the kind of learning that sticks.

Still feeling an incredible amount of pressure to race through that curriculum? Educational research shows that only about 10 to 15 percent of students learn best auditorily, but 80 percent of instructional delivery is auditory. Yikes.

What that means is to serve our learners in an authentic, meaningful way where the learning lasts, all that telling (direct-teaching) has to be toned down and replaced with lots more visual, hands-on, and experiential learning. And that, as we know, takes time.

What tips would you like to offer for staying focused and on track? We look forward to your suggestions.

11 Fixes To Speed Up Your Computer Before Buying A New One

1. Uninstall Any Leftover/Unwanted Programs

First, the most obvious step: get rid of any leftover or unwanted programs left on your system! We don’t recommend doing this manually through Windows. Instead, use IOBitUninstaller or another third-party uninstaller. The benefit of using a method like this as opposed to doing it in Windows is that you don’t have to uninstall programs one by one. You can just check them off a list, and all trace files and folders are actually deleted.

2. Disable Startup Programs

Ever notice that your computer is at its slowest when you’ve just turned it on? If that sounds accurate, chances are you have too many startup programs enabled. You should disable unnecessary startup programs so they don’t bog down the system.

Within Task Manager, choose the Startup tab, and you can individually enable and disable all startup programs.

3. Run a Full Malwarebytes Scan

Suspect that your computer might be bogged down by malware? Even if it isn’t, we recommend running a Malwarebytes scan at least once every one to two weeks, depending on how active you are online. Malwarebytes is a free, industry-leading tool for protection against viruses, ransomware, malware, and the like.

For the best results, consider running Malwarebytes in Safe Mode.

4. Enable High Performance Power Plan

By default, “Balanced” will be selected. To improve performance, select “High performance” – your power draw may be slightly higher, but if you’re reading this article, you probably need all the power you can get.

5. Use Lightweight Alternatives for Your Favorite Applications 6. Optimize Windows Performance Options

Windows actually takes a pretty significant amount of power to run on its own, especially modern versions of Windows with more extra features and prettier graphics. Here are a few visual tweaks that can improve your experience.

Within the Personalization window, choose the “Colors” tab, then switch Transparency effects off.

7. Disable Unused Windows Features

There are a wide variety of Windows features that take up a lot of performance but may not even be utilized by the end user. To alleviate this issue, we recommend disabling Cortana and using W10Privacy to cut down on as many unneeded extras as possible.

8. Run a Windows Repair

This will work best if you run it while within Safe Mode.

9. Use Built-In Reset Options

On Windows 10, it’s fairly easy to perform a Reset. In this context, a reset means a complete reinstallation of your operating system.

10. Switch to a Lightweight OS

If everything above fails, another way to speed up your computer is to replace Windows with a lightweight OS, like Linux.

Sure, the user interface will be different and your favorite applications might not be available, but there are plenty of Linux distros that are well-suited for Windows users and plenty popular applications are available for Linux, too. It just requires a little time and effort to get used to it, and who knows, you may like it so much that you make the switch permanently.

If you are already on Linux, learn how you can speed up a Linux PC.

11. Upgrade Your Hardware

If your computer is really old and slow, instead of getting a whole new PC, you can just upgrade some of the hardware.

The biggest improvement you can make to speed up an old computer is the addition of a solid-state drive (SSD). This will massively improve OS and application load times.

The addition of more RAM should improve performance across the board, but it can be hard finding the right RAM suitable for your old motherboard, and there might be a limit on the max RAM it can support. Refer to your motherboard manual and check out the things to take note of before you upgrade RAM.

When to Just Buy A New Computer

If you can’t speed up your computer with the above tips to achieve the results you want, it might be time to buy a new computer. Newer applications often require newer hardware – no matter how you optimize your old machine, running at maximum efficiency isn’t going to be able to compete with modern hardware. All is not wasted, though, as even if you got a new computer, there are still plenty of uses for your old PC.
