Suggested March 2024 How To Setup A Usb Drive That Can Run Or Install Ubuntu
There was a time not all that long ago, when you needed to rely on optical media to install or run Ubuntu on your desktop. These days, you can easily use USB for those tasks, thanks to a combination of large capacity flash drives and modern motherboard BIOS options.
In this article, I’ll show you how to create a USB drive that can install or run Ubuntu if you’re currently using Windows or OS X, or if you currently run Ubuntu and want to install it on another PC.
For most people, coming to Ubuntu means jumping ship from Windows, usually XP, Vista or Windows 7. For this example, I will be explain how to setup a USB flash drive using USB Creator for Windows. My reason for using this tool versus others is that it works flawlessly each time without tons of hassles.
Download the preferred Ubuntu ISO file you’d like to use. This can either be the standard Ubuntu release or a daily build Ubuntu release, depending on your preferences.
Keeping in mind that this will erase all the data on your USB flash drive, insert the drive into a free USB port. Open up USB Creator and select the ISO file you’re going to be using for your Ubuntu installation.
If you don’t want to install Ubuntu onto your hard drive, you can select the persistent data option, then choose the amount of persistent data you wish to retain on your USB flash drive. This is useful when you wish to retain your user data without needing to utilize an internal hard drive to retain these settings.
Considerations: It’s important to remember that your flash drive needs to be formatted as FAT32 in order for it to work. Luckily, USB Creator will alert you to this if it’s needed and allow you to easily format the drive, right there within the software. Also, if you are on a newer Windows 8 system, you may need to download and use rEFind to get around the UEFI headaches found on Windows 8 computers.
For those of you looking at installing Ubuntu from USB to OS X, there is really only one truly reliable option to get Ubuntu set up without frustrating yourself into giving up. And that option is Unetbootin. What might surprise many of you is that getting Ubuntu to work on a Mac isn’t as simple as one might think—you will need to use some terminal commands in conjunction with Unetbootin.
Download a copy of an Ubuntu ISO image (see links above). Remember, you will need to decide whether you prefer using a daily build or a stable release of Ubuntu. In either case, it must be 64-bit Ubuntu to work.
Download both rEFind and UNetbootin. Because we’re dealing with a controlled situation where Macs don’t make running Ubuntu from a USB drive easy, rEFind is helpful for booting into your USB flash drive after things are setup. You will need to follow these instructions to make your USB flash drive Ubuntu-bootable. The easiest approach however, is to install the chúng tôi script onto your OS X drive.
Download and install UNetbootin for OS X. This will make installing Ubuntu from USB easier than with other less accurate guides available on the Web.
Reboot your Mac, and you should be presented with a rEFind boot menu. Select the USB flash drive with Ubuntu installed and continue with your boot up.
Considerations: If you’re looking to skip running your Ubuntu installation from a flash drive and simply wish to install it onto your Mac’s hard drive, follow this guide for step by step instructions.

If you recently moved to Ubuntu from Windows or macOS and are looking for a way to install drivers in Ubuntu, you have come to the right place. We have added 4 detailed methods to update drivers in Ubuntu, right from downloading additional drivers to installing Nvidia’s latest graphical drivers. Apart from that, we have written separate articles on how to switch between Wayland and Xorg in Ubuntu and have compiled the best screen recording tools on Ubuntu for new users on Linux. On that note, let’s go ahead and learn how to manually install drivers in Ubuntu.Install Drivers in Ubuntu (2024)
In this tutorial, we have added 4 ways to install drivers in Ubuntu. From updating additional drivers to moving to the latest branch for bleeding-edge updates, we have covered everything. You can expand the table below and move to any section you want.
Note: The below methods have been tested on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) build, and they work flawlessly well.
In case you are unaware, drivers on Ubuntu or Linux are directly built into the kernel, and they are handled by the system automatically. So whenever the kernel is updated, drivers are also patched immediately. Unlike Windows, you don’t need to manually find and install each of the drivers.
1. First of all, open the App Launcher on Ubuntu and open “Software and Updates“. You can also directly open “Additional Drivers”.
2. Next, move to the “Additional Drivers” section. Here, you can see that it’s already using the recommended driver (proprietary and tested) for my Nvidia GeForce GT 730 graphics card.Install Drivers in Ubuntu From Terminal (CLI Method)
1. If you wish to update drivers in Ubuntu from the Terminal, well, you can do so using a bunch of commands. First off, open the Terminal from the app launcher or by pressing the “Ctrl + Alt + T” shortcut.ubuntu-drivers devices
3. Here, you can choose which driver to install. For example, to install the latest recommended driver which is nvidia-driver-470, run the command in the below fashion.sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470
orsudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:470
4. You can also run the below command to install all the recommended drivers automatically in Ubuntu.sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
4. After the installation, reboot your computer and you will move to the latest stable version. Run the below command to check the current driver version.nvidia-smi Install the Latest (Beta) Nvidia Drivers in Ubuntu
1. Open the Terminal in Ubuntu and run the below command to add the graphics driver PPA.sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
2. After that, run the below commands to update all the packages.sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
3. Now, execute the below command and it will list out all the latest drivers including both stable and beta builds. However, in my case, 470 is the latest driver, superseding even the beta build which has a version number of 465. So I can comfortably stay on 470.ubuntu-drivers devices
4. If a new version displays for your graphics card, you can run the below command to install the beta Nvidia drivers. Just replace 470 with your latest beta build.sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470 Install Nvidia Drivers in Ubuntu Using Official Installer
1. First off, open Nvidia’s website and enter your graphics card detail. Choose “Production Branch” for stable and “New Feature Branch” for beta drivers.
2. On the next page, download the Nvidia driver for your Ubuntu system. It will download a file in .run format.
4. Move to the “Permissions” tab and enable “Allow executing file as program“.
Note: I have SSHed into the Ubuntu computer from my Chromebook to capture the screen. It may look a bit different on your system.
6. In the text console mode, enter your Ubuntu username and password and log in. After that, run the below command to disable the graphical server.sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target
7. Now, unload the Nvidia driver that is currently in use by running the below command.sudo modprobe -r nvidia-drm
sudo sh filename.run
10. Once the installation is done, execute the below command to enable the display server.sudo systemctl start graphical.target
11. You may have to perform one more step. Run exit to close the current session and press “Ctrl + Alt + F2” to bring back the GUI interface.
12. Now, restart your computer, and the Nvidia driver in Ubuntu should be upgraded to the latest version.
Virtually everyone knows what a USB Flash Drive is. First available in 2000, USB drives are data storage devices designed to replace optical discs and magnetic floppy disks. USB drives were smaller, faster, and much more reliable, as they had no moving parts and were immune to electromagnetic interference (unlike floppys) and surface damage (unlike optical disks).
The first USB flash drives sold to the public had (by today’s standards) a laughably small storage capacity at 8MB. Since then, USB flash drives have increased from megabytes to terabytes. With the average person needing more and more space to store their data, older USB flash drives are being abandoned for larger more practical drives.
So what do you do with the old drives? Most folks probably chuck them into a drawer somewhere and forget all about them. We have previously discussed the various things you can do with old USB drives. Here are five more cool things to make good use of an old USB drive.1. USB Dead Drop
The brainchild of Berlin artist Aram Bartholl, a USB dead drop is guaranteed to make you feel like a spy. Dead drops are a method of espionage in which two parties can exchange information at a secret location without having to meet in person.
A USB dead drop takes this idea and updates it for the digital age. After embedding USB flash drives into walls, curbs, buildings, or other public spaces, anyone can access its data. Users can track down these USB dead drops and share data, anonymously and totally offline. Sound fun? Of course it does, so what are you waiting for? Start making one of your own!2. Flash Drives for Freedom
The North Korean government controls virtually every aspect of their citizens’ lives. Censorship of the Internet, movies, television, movies, music and books is rampant. Human rights activists have been secretly smuggling contraband material into the country for years, hoping to subvert the regime.
One of the best ways to smuggle media from the outside world into North Korea is via USB. Compact and able to store lots of data, USB drives are providing a window to the outside world. Human Rights Foundation and Forum 280 partnered with North Korean refugee organizations to collect unwanted USBs. After they are filled with censored media, the USBs are smuggled into North Korea where they can educate the suppressed population.3. Create an Automated Application Installer
The tedious process of downloading and installing your software of choice has become obsolete. Ninite is a package management system for Windows that allows users to create a custom application installer. Simply head to the Ninite website, select the software you wish to install, and Ninite compiles everything into a single executable. Running the Ninite executable will download and install the selected programs to your computer.
Ninite installs all software with default settings and automatically refuses any extra bloatware (like search toolbars) that try to sneak onto your system. Chuck the executable onto a USB, and you’ll never have to waste time downloading and installing programs again.4. Create a Windows 10 Password Reset Disk
Whether it’s your PC, phone, eBay account, or PayPal, everything requires a password. If you’re anything like me, you probably tend to forget your passwords from time to time. When it’s a website or service you usually have to spend a few minutes resetting the password. It’s an inconvenience for sure but not a complete disaster. If you forget the password on your Windows 10 PC, well, that’s a whole different can of worms. Before it comes to that, grab a spare USB (or SD card) and create a Password Reset Disk.
Note: this tool only works for local accounts and does not recover a Microsoft account password.5. Create a Modern Day Mix-Tape

Smartphones and tablets provide a convenient and ideal way of accessing content for on-the-go use, but there still remains something to be said for viewing on a big screen television.
You may be watching something on your phone, and want to see it on a larger display or share with others in the room.
Table of Contents
Thankfully, smartphones and tablets are built with multitasking capabilities such as listening to music, gaming, and streaming video. Most of them also pack the power of computers in a portable device, and this includes the ability to connect it to another screen or monitor, such as your TV.
Android and iOS device users have an arsenal of devices and wireless options to connect a phone or tablet to a TV. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to link up your phone or tablet to your TV via USB.Reasons To Connect Your Phone or Tablet To a TV
You can easily view your phone or tablet’s display on a TV by wireless means such as screen casting or using devices like Google Chromecast and others, but a USB to TV connection is beneficial in various ways.
Alternatively, you may want to display some photos for others in the room to see, stream videos in higher resolution, or watch content on a larger screen. In this case, a USB to TV connection from your phone will help you view your files like pictures on your TV, so your phone acts as a storage device if your TV has a USB input.
If you’re using a smart TV, it’s easy to connect to internet apps as these are built into the device. For other TVs, you can use streaming devices or set top boxes to get your favorite content up on the TV.Connect Your Phone or Tablet to Your TV Via USB
There are different methods you can use to connect your mobile device to a TV via USB such as using a USB cable for Android or Lightning cable for iOS devices, Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL), or SlimPort.
Let’s look at how each of these methods work to mirror your phone or tablet’s screen on your TV.Android – Using a USB Cable
This method is used when you want to view files or photos on a compatible TV as it technically transfers your files for opening on your TV.Connect With An Adapter Or Cable
This method works when you want to mirror your screen onto your TV to transmit the display on-screen. You can use an HDMI adapter or cable to connect your phone to a TV and mirror the content on your screen.
A USB to HDMI adapter is the easiest option as you simply plug the adapter to your phone and plug the HDMI cable into it to connect to your TV and watch from your phone. Check that your phone supports HDMI Alt Mode, which lets it output video.
Some Android devices have micro or mini HDMI ports for direct connection to HDMI over a single cable, so it’s important to check whether your cable is compatible before connecting your devices.Connect With a Converter
A converter allows you to mirror your phone’s screen to your TV while charging its battery at the same time. This method involves plugging the converter into a USB-C port and HDMI port using your charger and HDMI cable, and your screen will be cast onto your TV for as long as you want.Connect Using MHL
The Mobile High-Definition Link protocol allows compatible smartphones or tablets to connect to a TV. The general setup for using MHL to connect your phone or tablet to a TV via USB requires you to have an MHL-enabled and compatible phone or tablet, HDMI and power cable, USB to HDMI MHL cable or adapter, and a display with HDMI input.
If your phone supports MHL, connect it to the HDMI MHL adapter and attach an HDMI cable, and then connect to your TV. Don’t worry about your phone or tablet battery running out of juice, because this kind of adapter has a charging port so your device can charge while you watch.Connect Using SlimPort
MHL is one of the best ways of connecting your phone or tablet to your TV via USB, but you can also use a SlimPort cable, which works similar to MHL as it serves content from your device to your TV display except its outputs are different.
MHL and SlimPort are both plug-and-play, but MHL is limited to HDMI video output, whereas SlimPort works via HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort and DVI. This means you can use it for various displays, including older TVs that don’t have digital inputs, but have VGA.
SlimPort and MHL also differ in power supply; the former doesn’t draw power from your device, while the latter does, which is why you need to connect a power cable with the MHL method.
To use SlimPort, you’ll need a compatible device, SlimPort adapter or cable (depending on your device), display with HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort and DVI input, plus a video cable.
Plug the SlimPort adapter to your phone, and attach it to your TV using the right cable and you can view your screen on your TV.Stream With a DLNA App
If using cables doesn’t work for you, use a DLNA app to connect your phone or tablet to your TV.
DLNA is a streaming protocol supported by most internet-connected TVs through which you can stream media files to your TV from your phone or tablet, provided the files don’t have DRM features.
Some good DLNA apps you can use include LocalCasts, which is free, or AllCast and stream your media files to a DLNA device.Connect With Samsung DeX
DeX connectivity works with Samsung S8 or newer flagship handsets, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. However, for S8, Note 8, S9 and S9+, you need a dock, power cable to charge the phone and dock, HDMI cable, and a TV with an HDMI input to use DeX connectivity.
Other Samsung devices like the Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 or newer models merely require a Type C to HDMI cable to enter DeX mode and DeX desktop mode respectively.iOS – Using a Lightning Cable
This process is similar to connecting your Android phone or tablet to TV via USB, except you’ll need a Lightning cable, which differs with your iPhone model.
Most people have an iPhone 5 or newer with a Lightning connector, but for HDMI outputs or VGA connections, you need a Lightning digital AV adapter or a Lightning to VGA adapter respectively.
There are many third-party cables but most of them don’t work if you want to watch video-streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, or on-demand video like DirecTV or Comcast Xfinity. They lack HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), which protects against pirates capturing the content.
Plug in the adapter and connect video output to your TV and your screen will mirror to the display. Remember to plug the USB end of the cable into the adapter and the other end to a power source, as it needs to be charged to play.
Note: The Digital AV Adapter for iOS devices comes in two models, serving different purposes. One connects your iPhone or iPad to a TV with HDMI output, while the VGA adapter plugs into VGA-compatible peripherals, so be sure to pick the right version.Connect With a DLNA App
Like Android, you can connect your iOS device to internet-enabled TV using DLNA apps to stream media such as videos or music. For videos and music purchased from iTunes Store, you won’t be able to use a DLNA app to stream content with DRM restrictions.
The good thing about using a DLNA app is that it’ll still find media on other devices like your computer and set up streaming to your game console, TV, or another PC without having to convert a video or install special codecs for it to work. Conclusion

Getting work done with just a tablet is hard. Many of us carry Android or iOS tablets to stay connected while we’re away from our PC, but without a proper keyboard or mouse it’s difficult to do much more than answer a few emails or play Angry Birds.Download a Better Keyboard for Increased Productivity
The biggest challenge in working from your tablet is adapting to the lack of a keyboard and mouse. While it’s possible to pick up a portable Bluetooth keyboard, many professionals find working exclusively on tablets appealing because of their portability, and lugging around a bag brimming with peripherals sort of ruins the point. Instead, download apps that make the tablet’s on-screen keyboard work for your needs.
For Apple’s iOS, consider an app like Keyboard Upgrade, which allows you to resize and split up the keyboard to make touchscreen typing more comfortable. Unfortunately keyboard apps on the iPad are of limited use since Apple does not currently permit developers to modify the iOS keyboard that pops up in all applications, and thus apps like Keyboard Upgrade require you to copy what you type and paste it into other applications.
Android tablet users have it much better thanks to excellent keyboard replacement apps like Thumb Keyboard or SwiftKey Tablet X. You can even try a new way of typing with Swype, and each of these keyboard upgrades will upgrade the default Android keyboard across all Honeycomb apps.Never Lose a Business Card Again
Chantel Atkins owns The Rhythmic Lounge, a streaming music website that unites underground artists and musicians. She runs the website almost exclusively from her iPad 2, relying on common business apps like Google Analytics and QuickOffice Pro. For working professionals looking to streamline their business, Chantel recommends the handy Business Card Reader app for the iPad 2. “This app is great; it allows me to instantly import a business card and all of its information,” she says. “There’s no worry about misunderstanding the phone number or email address and possibly losing touch with that connection.” Those using an Android tablet should check out ABBYY, a business card reader that links up with your LinkedIn and Twitter accounts to help you better connect with new business contacts.Let Apps Turn Your Tablet Into a High-Tech Swiss Army Knife
Of course you’re not limited to Square if you want to accept credit cards on the road; the mobile payment market is constantly evolving and there are already worthy competitors like Intuit that offer equitably priced mobile payment systems.Need a Legal Signature on That Document? There’s an App for That
Professionals working in fields that regularly handle sensitive data are understandably hesitant about migrating their business practices to a tablet, but investment banker Harry Ting conducts most of his business and meetings using just an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer tablet and the accompanying keyboard. Ting works for a boutique firm in Dallas and regularly handles sensitive engagement letters and nondisclosure agreements, storing and sharing the documents via DropBox and validating signatures on the go with the Vignature image-based electronic signature app.
