Suggested January 2024 How To Reduce Microphone Background Noise On Your Pc
When making a video-conferencing call, both the video and audio quality are important for a good user experience. Your audio should be clear and crisp so that it’s easy for all listening ears to understand. However, one of the common issues that disrupt the call is the background noise from your microphone. You’ll learn here how to reduce your microphone background noise on your computer.
Use HeadphonesMost laptops have a low-quality built-in microphone, which can cause echo or muffled audio. The best way to reduce microphone background noise in this instance is to use headphones, preferably with a dedicated microphone. This will ensure that your voice quality is clear and that the microphone does not pick up noise from your speakers.
Remove Surrounding Background NoiseAnother very important step to improve your audio quality is to remove background noise from your surroundings. You can do this by turning off fans, closing windows, and locating yourself away from any other disturbing noise. Make sure your microphone is at a distance from your mouth so that your breathing can’t be heard by others. Another good option is to mute your microphone when you’re not talking.
Perform a Microphone TestThe best bet to understand your voice quality and what factor may be affecting it is to do a microphone test. There are various options to accomplish this.
Here, from the Recording tab, select your microphone and select Configure.
Select “Set up microphone” and follow the steps listed to allow you to visualize your Microphone sound level. Windows will also let you know if anything’s wrong with your mic.
The second method is a bit simpler albeit manual. Simply record a small voice clip using the Windows Voice Recorder, play it and listen to your own voice. You’ll be able to understand if something’s wrong with it in regard to background noise and echo, and then you can take steps to rectify it.
Voice Suppression In WindowsWindows offers some features to help you reduce your background noise. The exact features available will depend on the sound card in your PC and your manufacturer’s audio drivers. We’ve included a short guide below.
1. Open the traditional Control Panel on your PC / Laptop. To do this, search for Control Panel in your Start menu. Make sure to open the old traditional Start menu, as these features aren’t available in the new Settings app.
4. Here, in the Levels tab, you’ll be able to adjust the voice level of your microphone. If you have background noise, you can try lowering the Microphone boost setting. This makes the microphone more sensitive to sounds so that it’ll be activated more easily, but it will automatically pick up more background sounds.
Another option that may or may not be present depending on your PC settings is Voice Suppression. This will be present in the Enhancements tab. If you don’t have this tab, your PC may not support this option.
In the Enhancements tab, you’ll find two options:
Noise Suppression / Noise Cancellation: this reduces background noise and in some cases may completely eliminate it.
Acoustic Echo Cancellation: this eliminates any echo in your voice, especially if it’s caused by the sound emitted from your external speakers (if used).
Microphone Input Settings on macOSYou can also adjust the microphone input settings on your Mac. Depending on which Mac you have and what type of microphone you’re using, you’ll be able to adjust these settings. To do this:
1. Open System Preferences on your Mac.
3. Similarly, depending on your microphone, you may also see an option to “Use ambient noise reduction.” This option is not available if a four-channel built-in microphone format is selected in Audio MIDI Setup.
Use App’s Built-In Voice Reduction SoftwareMany video-conferencing software offer settings to optimize your voice and the audio quality. For example, Discord and Zoom both allow you to set up, check and optimize your voice through your mic. They also offer different background noise suppression features which can be very handy to reduce microphone background noise.

How To Reduce Power Supply Noise On Your Pc
The power supply is arguably the least exciting part of a personal computer. Not surprisingly, it tends to get ignored and often has the least amount of budget allocated in most PC builds. That’s also why the Power Supply Unit (PSU) happens to be the culprit in most noisy computers. Here we take a look at the various ways in which your power supply can cause a racket and how to reduce power supply noise on your PC.
1. Is the PSU fan clear? If the noise emanating from your computer is loud and harsh, your first line of action should be to open the case and verify whether the PSU fan blades are free of obstacles. It isn’t uncommon for stray cables to poke into the fan blades despite the protective grill. This is easily fixed by simply securing the object poking into the PSU fan.
However, things get tricky if the source of this obstruction is internal. Resist the temptation to take the power supply apart yourself at all costs. The bulk capacitors within can hold enough electrical potential to kill you even when the device is powered off. Please leave this to the professionals and take the PSU to the authorized service center.
2. Is the PSU fan worn out?If the harsh/buzzing sounds persist without any sign of obstruction, there’s a good chance that the fan bearing has worn out. Older and/or cheaper PSUs employ fans with sleeve-bearing fans that are notorious for making unpleasant noises near the end of their life cycle. The problem can be rectified by either re-lubing the sleeve-bearing fans or outright replacing them. However, this cannot be done without taking the PSU apart. That’s something we don’t recommend under any circumstance.
3. Check the case mounting screwsThis might seem like a no-brainer, but it isn’t uncommon for PC builders to either skimp on PSU screws or forget to tighten them. If your PSU isn’t secured to the case, the rotating mass of the built-in fan can cause vibrations that are loud enough to be heard. Fixing this is a matter of adding missing screws and/or tightening the loose ones.
4. Check air intake/exhaust for blockageA PC component that draws in air is usually equipped with mesh filters for dust control. These filtered intakes tend to accumulate dust and become clogged over time. The PSU fan is no exception. In fact, it is quite prone to clogging since it usually takes in air from the bottom of the case. Being placed on the floor doesn’t help matters either.
A clogged PSU air intake can cause the fan to run faster and noisier. Clean the PSU fan filter/intake periodically to avoid this problem. Avoid placing the rear of the case too close to a wall or otherwise obstructing the exhaust mesh of the PSU in any way. Failure to do so will contribute to heat buildup and consequently increased fan noise.
5. Keep it off the carpet 6. Make sure the PSU is oriented correctlyThis is a fairly common mistake committed by novice PC builders and leading technology media houses alike. All desktop PC cases are designed to mount power supplies in a specific orientation for optimal cooling by ensuring air intake and exhaust along the correct direction. Mount the PSU the wrong way, and you risk blocking the critical cooling airflow. This installation error manifests itself as excessive fan noise. It is also a potential fire hazard.
7. Don’t rule out coil whineWith all the standard remedies out of the way, here’s something from left field. Coil whine can be as noisy as a misbehaving fan and much harder to diagnose. It manifests as a harsh buzzing noise that tends to rise and fall with varying levels of PC activity. Coil whine emanates from inductors or power coils found on the PSU’s printed circuit board. This is easily located once you put your ear towards the GPU, motherboard, and PSU to isolate the culprit.
These power-conditioning components tend to vibrate in tandem with high frequency currents coursing through them, thereby making a buzzing sound when the frequency of vibration matches with the inductors’ natural resonant frequency. Most well-designed PSUs prevent this annoying phenomenon with better design and having these components coated with vibration/sound-absorbing materials. Reputable PSU manufacturers offer replacements for premium/high-performance units exhibiting excessive coil whine.
8. Running your PSU in the sweet spotA computer PSU must convert alternating current from a wall outlet into direct current required by the PC components. This AC-to-DC conversion is fraught with inefficiency that is converted to heat. Computer PSUs are the most efficient when they are asked to supply anywhere between 40 and 60 percent of their total rated output.
The PSU tends to become inefficient when it is forced to supply power outside of this sweet spot. In other words, a PSU rated at 1000 watts isn’t efficient enough while supplying 950 watts of power. This inefficiency manifests as heat dissipation through the power-delivery components. That in turn forces the cooling fan to work hard, which consequently contributes to overall noise.
One way is to calculate the amount of power your PC is consuming, then get an oversized PSU. It isn’t uncommon for PC builders to choose grossly powerful power supplies. Most power supplies don’t switch on the fans until the system load reaches 30 percent of their rated capacity. The solution might not be efficient, but it sure is quiet.
9. Undervolting to keep things quietUndervolting is the exact opposite of overclocking. In simple terms, it involves reducing the maximum voltage supplied to critical processing hardware, such as the CPU and the GPU. Refer to our excellent undervolting guide to learn more about the process.
Reducing voltage to these components lowers the total power consumption and therefore the total heat dissipated by the PSU as well. This also makes your computer and PSU run significantly cooler and quieter. This process may be involved, but it is a powerful option if all previous options fail to make your PSU run silently.
Conclusion: it’s smarter to invest in a good PSUWhile all these remedies will address your problem to some extent, there’s little that can be done if you are rocking a really cheap power supply. That’s a bad idea because low-quality PSUs are responsible for most system stability issues and critical component failures. It is a good idea to be able to identify a dying power supply. And don’t forget to check our guide to choose the correct PSU for your PC.

How To Test Input Lag On Your Pc
Testing input lag is a challenging and inexact process. Even RTings, a trusted source of input lag tests, says they had to develop their own tool to make it work, and only some people have the appropriate hardware to do so. However, there is still a way you can test your input lag if you have access to a CRT monitor or a screen with an input lag you already know.
Input lag is the time it takes between when your computer receives a signal, sends it to your monitor, and the action appears on the screen. Most of the time, it isn’t very noticeable. For example, when you’re watching streaming video, it sends one frame after the other, and any lag is accounted for because each frame has the same rate, and you aren’t inputting any signals from your mouse and keyboard.
One example of lag that’s easy to see is when you’re typing a sentence. It may take a split second between when you press the key and when the letter appears on the document. It’s almost imperceptible because of how low the input lag is on most modern systems. People used CRT displays with basically no input lag in the past, so it wasn’t an issue then.
There are times when input lag matters a lot, though. For example, competitive gamers can suffer if the input lag between a computer and the display is too high.
If you haven’t experienced different input lags, try typing on this Lag Simulator at 0ms and then at 400ms. You’ll see a noticeable difference.
Sometimes the input lag doesn’t matter much. If you’re not doing fast-paced gaming, you may prefer a display with different specifications and a little more lag. Displays with low input lag often aren’t quite as visually appealing as displays with high input lag numbers because of the types of panels they use to get the low ms rating. This is also why televisions usually have a higher input lag than PC monitors.
However, as monitor technology improves, displays with low input lag look better and better. There’s a lot less to compromise on now than there was even five years ago.
The lag you experience is affected by a few different factors.
The best way to find out the input lag of a monitor is to check with the manufacturer or look up independent ratings. Since it’s hard to control for all the factors on an at-home test, they’re not very accurate and won’t give you a rating that’s completely right.
However, you can still check to get an idea of how bad your input lag is in a few ways.
To test the lag of your display on your own, you need a monitor that you know the input lag rating of and a camera in addition to the monitor you want to test. However, this won’t be as accurate as the information you’d get from the manufacturer.
One of the primary reasons this doesn’t give a perfectly accurate input lag rating is that you can’t control how quickly the monitor sends signals to the monitors with different cables and connection types. If it prioritizes sending it to the display you’re testing, it may appear to have a lower input lag than it does compared to the control display.
You can do many things to improve your input lag numbers, even without switching your monitor.
You can monitor your performance with these changes to see how each affects your lag. Changing things as you go can help create the perfect setup for your needs.
The amount of input lag you can deal with depends on your computing activities and personal tolerance. Some people don’t mind a bit of delay when doing everyday activities like typing emails or navigating the internet. Some people prefer an instant response, even during those common activities.
For gamers who rely on fast-paced actions, like competitive shooters or MMO end-gamers, a total input lag under 40 ms can be helpful. If you check out what displays professional players use, they’re generally ones that introduce less than 10 ms to the lag.
Your HDMI cable will introduce some input lag because it takes microseconds to send the signal from the computer to your display. However, the delay is so slight that you won’t even notice it.
Most of your computer components will introduce a bit of lag as they do the processing and work necessary to make your computer run. If one of your components creates a bottleneck in your system, that could delay processing and introduce even more lag as well.
You will still have some input lag, no matter how fast your internet is. However, some lag is also introduced if you’re connecting to another server because of how that server performs and how good your connection to it is. If an external server is slow, you won’t be able to have things work at your optimum speed because that server isn’t providing enough speed for a smooth experience.
Most televisions have higher input lag than most monitors. While it isn’t true across the board, it is true as a general rule. You should always check with the manufacturer and read what kind of lag the display has before buying it, though.
You may be surprised at how bad specific displays can be – like I was when I tried to play a first-person shooter on the first 75-inch TV I ever hooked to my computer. The lag was terrible enough to make it unplayable.

Want to experience some classic games? You can play old games on Windows 11, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the perfect match. Numerous challenges have been precariously linked to this game. Arguably the most challenging one is how to play it on your PC.
It’s one of the most beloved games in Nintendo’s history, so it’s no surprise even the newer generation wants in on the fun. If you’ve ever wanted to play this game on your PC, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we show you how to get and play it on your PC.
Where can I play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on PC?Some games require extra effort to get them to play on your PC. And if you should go through all that is required to play, it should be worth it. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of those games users will go to extreme lengths to play.
The game was originally released in 1998, so it’s not a new one. However, it’s still enjoyable and well worth playing today. If you’re looking for classic gaming nostalgia or want to check out one of the best games ever made, this is it.
Since its release, Zelda has been predominantly locked to Nintendo, which forced other users to look for alternatives. Below, we show you how to bypass these restrictions.
Is there a way to play Zelda Ocarina of Time?Yes, but before you can start playing, you will need the following:
ROMYou need a copy of the game, and you’ll need to get it legally. The game is no longer in production, and Nintendo has taken steps to prevent people from playing it on their computers. A ROM is a copy of a game cartridge.
It’s an exact bit-for-bit duplicate of the original game. The only difference is that instead of being stored on a physical cartridge, it’s stored in digital form on your computer. It may cost you a few bucks, but if you’re dedicated, you can’t put a price on a classic game.
Expert tip:
EmulatorsEmulators are programs that allow users to run software designed for another platform on a computer or mobile device. In this case, the emulator will allow users to run the original version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on their computers.
These are much easier to come by, and you can check out our recommended list of the best all-in-one emulators. The downside to using emulators, especially for older games, is that they can be quite unreliable and buggy.
For this article, we will use a port: The Ship of Harkinian. This is an unofficial fan-made remake of Ocarina of Time that runs natively on Windows. It includes many improvements over the original game, including high-resolution textures and better controls.
How can I play Zelda Ocarina of Time? Now that you’re all set proceed with the following steps:
The resolution is top-notch, and the widescreen support is a much-welcomed improvement. Now, all fans are waiting on is a higher FPS, and from the look of things, it doesn’t seem far off.
After all is said and done, the most important thing to take away from this article is that playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time on your PC is a lot of fun.
It’s easily one of the best games ever made, so it’s well worth playing regardless. If you haven’t played it before, you owe it to yourself to set aside an evening and try out this classic gem.
This is not where it ends. We also have another interesting article on how to play Zelda: Breath of the Wild on your PC, so check that out too.

Gamers should also take a moment to visit our dedicated Gaming page.
Players around the world finally have the opportunity to play FIFA 18! However, not everything goes smoothly for all of them, as there are already some issues, which certainly kills the hype.
In that manner, we’ve conducted a list of the most common problems that occurred (or may occur) in FIFA 18. So, if you’ve experienced at least one of these problems, check the solutions below.
How do I fix the most common FIFA 18 problems? 1. Invisible players in online modeThis issue hasn’t occurred yet, but based on our experience, it eventually will. The invisible players issue in the online mode will probably be caused by some patch. So, the best solution, in this case, is to simply update the game, as EA will definitely release a proper fix.
2. FIFA 18 unexpectedly exits Ultimate TeamSame thing here. If you encounter unexpected exits while playing the Ultimate Team mode, just update your game.
If updating doesn’t solve the problem, try disabling some background apps that may interfere with FIFA 18. Most of the time the apps you’re looking for are Skype and your antivirus program.
If the problem still occurs, try disabling the Origin in-game feature. Here’s how to do that:
For a better gaming experience, we recommend downloading Game Fire for free. It will help with various gaming issues, such as low FPS, lags, and slow PC.
3. FIFA 18 controller doesn’t workIf your controller doesn’t work in FIFA 18, there are two things you can do. You can delete your profile, and create a new one. Or you can just update your controller’s drivers.
Here’s how to delete your FIFA 18 profile:
Start the game.
Go to preferred mode where issues occurred.
Move on to Customize.
Select Profile.
Delete it.
Start a New game mode and go to Controller settings.
You should see that the issue is gone.
Move on until you are able to load an old game.
4. Game crashes when launchedHere’s what you need to do if your FIFA 18 crashes on launch:
If your computer has two graphics cards, use this solution:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionWindowsRequireSignedAppInit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionWindowsRequireSignedAppInit
5. Black screenThe best solution in case of a black screen issue is to update your graphics card drivers. Here’s how to do that:
Alternatively, you can update your graphics card driver automatically with dedicated software such as Outbyte Driver Updater. You can set it up to do regular scans and updates while you take care of more important tasks.
It is a time-saving utility that identifies outdated and damaged drivers and installs the best versions available. Outbyte Driver Updater always matches your hardware with the corresponding drivers, so you don’t have to worry about that.
6. FIFA 18 won’t connect to EA serversHere’s what you need to do:
Make sure EA servers are running
Restart your router
Check if firewall is blocking the game
7. The game won’t startIf FIFA 18 won’t start, try running it as Administrator:
Expert tip:
8. VC++ runtime error
Go to Origin GamesFIFA 17__Installervcvc2012Update3redist
Run the vcredist_x64.exe file
Immediately go back to your Origin Library and install the game.
9. Issues with saving the resolution option when starting the gameHere’s what you need to do:
Go to: C:DocumentsFIFA 17, open the
file
Add your customized resolution at the RESOLUTIONHEIGHT and RESOLUTIONWIDTH options
Save the file and go back to the game.
10. FIFA 2023 doesn’t start; the game never workedThis problem can be caused by various factors, therefore multiple solutions can be applied to it. Here are some of the most common workarounds:
11. Fix graphics issues
Update your graphics drivers.
Turn down shadows and adjust graphics settings.
Disable third party background apps and then set FIFA 17 in High Priority in Task Manager.
If your computer is equipped with a Nvidia GPU, go to Settings and set Power Management Mode to
Maximum Performance.
12. Transfer Market Purchase – Listing expired errorA lot of players recently encouraged a strange Listing expired error while making purchases in the Transfer Market.
Unfortunately, EA hasn’t released the solution yet, but ‘technicians’ recommend unlinking your profile and linking it once again.
“Thanks for the continued reports on this. Getting an expired error when trying to purchase something on the market is being looked into, you don’t need to unlink accounts to get this to work, we’re looking into a fix.”
13. We are sorry but there has been an error connecting to FIFA 18 Ultimate Team“We are sorry but there has been an error connecting to FIFA 18 Ultimate Team” is another common FIFA 18 error that bugs too many players.
This was a serious issue some time ago, but EA has been working on the fix. So, you probably just need to update your game in order to fix this problem. If it doesn’t get fixed right away, try again in a few days.
14. EAS FC experience stuck at 86.324/86.700This is perhaps one of the most serious issues players of the FIFA Ultimate Team have faced so far. Apparently, experience points are just stuck at some point, and no matter what you do, you can’t get them up.
More than one hundred players have reported this issue on the EA forums so far. But unfortunately, there’s still no solution, and we’re clueless about what you should do in this case.
15. Pro Clubs – no opponent foundIf you’re not able to find any opponents in Pro Clubs, try the following workaround:
Unfortunately, this is only a temporary solution. Hopefully, some future game update will fix the issue for good.
16. Match won’t start, stuck in pre-match trainingThis problem was caused by some of the previous squad updates, which messed up boot ids and players. We’re not going to get into details here, if you want to find out more about this issue, visit this forum thread.
To resolve this issue, you basically need to delete your current squad and let the game download new squad files. If you’re not sure how to do that, follow these instructions:
After doing this, you should be able to start the match without any problems.
This post has been updated to account for the increasing amount of bugs but also with their respective fixes, when applicable.

With a new antivirus treat fresh out of the oven, Bitdefender is proposing a new era of digital security. In today’s world full of threats and malicious entities that scour the internet, it’s more important than any time before to have complete control over security.
There are many factors to keep in mind, ranging from keeping threats out to keeping yourself safe when you browse the web. It’s not about browsing the web either. Many attackers will try to hijack your desktop or physical device, making life a torment for those that don’t use antivirus protection. BitDefender is also the first big antivirus company to release their 2023 product lineup already, so that’s why we already included them in our list with the best antivirus for 2023.
There are many reasons for which you should get the latest Bitdefender version, but here are just a couple of them:
The latest versionAs time passes, more virus threats and hacker attacks will reveal themselves to the world, making it harder and harder for outdated software to keep up with protection. Having the latest version of Bitdefender will ensure that the most recent means of protection are in place. Professional antivirus service providers like Bitdefender work to bring more functionality to their software which means that every new feature has a precise place in the developer’s plan.
FeaturesThere are many reasons for which you should get the latest Bitdefender version, but here are just a couple of them:
The new Advanced Threat Defense feature acts like a guard dog that is able to sniff out any possible threat. Sometimes, threats are disguised as regular processes, but they won’t be able to get passed Bitdefender which can tell legitimate Windows processes from shady or phony ones.
The Safe files feature turns the computer into an impenetrable fortress. To be more precise, it’s like it creates these little bunkers within the system, where your most important and sensitive data can be stored. And just like a real life bunker, no one unauthorized can get in. This will stop hackers from trying to use data present in the system to initiate a ransomware attack.
The Webcam Protection feature makes sure no one can remotely access your webcam. This is pretty much one of the oldest tricks in the book but not being versed in IT, many users still become victims. That can be avoided with Bitdefender which will act as a big wall between your privacy and nosy intruders.
Downloading Bitdefender 2023 for Windows PCIf you want to know more about 2023 edition, we recommend you to visit BitDefender’s website.
