I absolutely love Fantastical. It’s a wonderful way to manage my week-to-week activities via my iPhone, and there’s a desktop client as well. Fantastical uses “real” language when it comes to adding appointments to your calendar. This means that I can simply type: Dinner with the wife next Wednesday at six, and it knows to setup an appointment on March 13 at 6PM. That’s really just the beginning of how useful Fantastical is, but this isn’t meant to be a review of Fantastical, this is a tutorial that shows you how to link Fantastical to the stock Calendar app.

Now, why in the world would you ever want to link Fantastical to the stock Calendar app? For one primary reason. 3rd party apps aren’t allowed to display the current day with a dynamic number like the stock iOS Calendar app does. That means I have to make a compromise. I can keep both the stock Calendar app on my Home screen alongside Fantastical, or I can remove the stock Calendar app from my Home screen and suffer without the ability to see the current date.

The most desirable solution would be for Apple to allow Flexibits — the developer of Fantastical — and any other 3rd party app developer, to use dynamically updating app icons. Since I don’t see that happening in the foreseeable future, we must use a workaround instead. Thankfully, I believe I’ve found the perfect workaround in the form of a jailbreak tweak that’s sort of been forgotten. It’s a tweak that I reviewed a long time ago, but I had all but forgotten about. The jailbreak tweak is called OpenOther, and it allows you to redirect an app icon to another app of your choice. This, as it turns out, is the perfect workaround for the Fantastical problem. Check inside for a full tutorial to see how I did it.

Video Walkthrough

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is to head over to Cydia and download OpenOther for free. If you’re browsing this post from your iPhone, you can use this link to take you directly to OpenOther’s Cydia page. Yes, it works fine with iOS 6.

Step 2: Obviously, you want to make sure you have Fantastical installed as well. You can download it from the App Store using this link.

Step 3: Open the Settings app, and tap the OpenOther preference panel to open up the OpenOther configuration screen.

Step 4: Make sure that the toggle switch to enable the tweak is set to the ON position.

Step 5: In the App to redirect field, type the following:

Step 6: In the Redirect field, type the following: com.flexibits.fantastical.iphone

Step 7: Tap the Settings button in the upper left-hand corner to exit the OpenOther configuration screen, and press your Home button to get back to the Home screen.

Step 8: Tap the stock Calendar app, and instead of the stock Calendar app opening, Fantastical should open instead.

That’s all there is to it; that’s how you can easily link the stock Calendar app to Fantastical. Now, you have the best of both worlds. You have the dynamic day app icon on your Home screen, and you have a direct link to Fantastical. All of this, without having both app icons nestled together on your Home screen.

How To Create A Facetime Link In Calendar On Ios 15

Apple recently demonstrated all the features that are coming in the next major update for your iPhone – iOS 15. Set to release this September, the upcoming iOS version will come with a slew of new features like SharePlay, Focus, Spotlight search for photos, Live Text, new Weather UI, and more. But perhaps the biggest changes to be made available on iOS will be the new features set to roll out to FaceTime. 

In iOS 15, FaceTime is getting a new revamp owing to the increasing reliance on video conferences that have been forced upon us. One of these FaceTime features includes being able to generate a FaceTime link that can be shared via messages and email and also linked to a Calendar event. The addition of these FaceTime links will also make the dream of joining FaceTime calls via Android and Windows a reality.

In this post, we’ll help you generate a link for a video call on FaceTime using the Calendar app on your iPhone or iPad. 

How to Create a FaceTime Link in Calendar on your iPhone and iPad

Before you go ahead and try to create a FaceTime link inside the Calendar app on your iPhone or iPad, you need to know that this new feature is only available on iOS 15.

If you do somehow get iOS 15 on your iPhone, you can follow these steps to create a FaceTime Link inside Calendar. To do this, open the Calendar app on your iPhone and tap on the ‘+’ icon at the top right corner to create a new event. 

You will now be taken to a new screen. Here, tap on the ‘FaceTime’ option under ‘Video Call’. 

When you do that, FaceTime will automatically create an upcoming call and link it to your Calendar event. If this is successful, you should be able to see the ‘FaceTime’ label under your event title inside the Calendar app. 

In case, Calendar doesn’t add a FaceTime link…

Since iOS 15 is still in Developer Beta, there are a bunch of bugs as you’d expect. We believe this is why on some occasions, you may not be able to add a link to a FaceTime call directly from a Calendar event. In such scenarios, you will have to manually add a link from FaceTime. For this, open the FaceTime app on iOS and look for the most recent ‘FaceTime Link’ under the ‘Upcoming’ section. If you don’t see one, you might have to create a new link by tapping the ‘Create Link’ button at the top. 

If you see a recent ‘FaceTime Link’ under the ‘Upcoming’ section, tap on the ‘i’ icon adjacent to it.

 On the next ‘FaceTime Link’ screen, select the ‘Share Link’ option. 

When the Share Menu appears, tap on the ‘Copy’ option. 

When the FaceTime link is copied onto your clipboard, go to the ‘Location or Video Call’ option inside the ‘New Event’ screen. 

You can then add the FaceTime Link you copied inside the ‘Enter Location or Video Call’ search field at the top. For this, tap and hold on the search field and then tap on the ‘Paste’ option when it appears. 

When this link is pasted, tap on the ‘FaceTime’ option which will now carry the link actual link to the video call. 

The Calendar event should now include the FaceTime Link at the top. 

After you have added a FaceTime link to the Calendar event, you can edit other event details on the screen like meeting start and end time, add invitees, alerts, attachments, other URLs, and notes as required. 

Once you have added all the relevant details for the event, you can tap on the ‘Add’ button (or ‘Done’ button if you’re editing an existing event on Calendar) at the top right corner.

When you successfully create an event on Calendar with a FaceTime link, a FaceTime label should appear inside the Event Details page once the event has been created.

From here you can enter the FaceTime call directly by tapping ‘Join’ or share a link to the call using the Share icon beside it. 

That’s all you need to know about creating a FaceTime Link in the Calendar app on iOS.

Step #1. Open Calendar app on your iOS device.

Step #2. Under Other section in the sidebar, check the box to the left of Birthdays. Going forward, you will see the gift icon to the left of your friend’s name.

Later, if you happen to change your mind and wish to hide the birthdays in the Calendar app for macOS. Follow the same steps explained above and then uncheck the box to the left of Birthdays option.

How to Connect Phone Link to Your PC

For the Phone Link app to work, you need to have it installed on your PC. It comes pre-installed on Windows 10 and 11 and can also be downloaded via the Microsoft Store. 

You need to have the Phone Link Companion app installed on your Android device. Some Samsung devices come with this pre-installed; otherwise, you can find it on the Google Play Store.

To set up Phone Link:

Open the app on your phone. You can find it by searching for Link to Windows. If you don’t have the app, install it from the Google Play Store. In the app, select Add computer.

The Pros and Cons of the Phone Link App

For those who need to maintain constant contact with their phone, either for work or otherwise, the Phone Link app can be a helpful tool—especially for Samsung users. In fact, if you have a Samsung phone, you will be able to keep a window open that mirrors your phone’s screen, meaning that you can use your phone as usual. 

One of the commonly reported issues with Phone Link is that it disconnects often. This makes the app pretty useless, and there doesn’t seem to be a consistent fix for the issue.

Then, check your access under Access level. You need to have Admin access level set up with your email address.

Go over to the Admin section at the lower left-hand side of the platform.

Under User Management, you need to have edit access to the account.

Link Your Accounts Together

Check the compatibility of your Google Ads IDs.

Choose and input an account name in the Link group title field. This way, if you have multiple accounts that you connect to your Google Ads account, you can determine where this is coming from. 

Choose where you want to pull data from. You are allowed to choose multiple views. 

Enable auto-tagging to automatically pull data from your Google Ads account into Google Analytics. 

You may also want to leave auto-tagging settings as they are, especially if you are utilizing UTM tags and you want to avoid mixing it up with the auto-tagging feature.

You may also want to try to link Google Ads and Google Analytics through Google Ads’ linking wizard.

So let’s go ahead and see how the data will look once the two accounts are linked! 

Looking at Live Data

Open the homepage of your Google Analytics account. You’ll be able to see all the campaigns and reports under Acquisition → Google Ads → Campaigns. 

On the top of the screen, you’ll see the sales charts. It will show the number of Users vs. Transactions report of a particular timeframe for your campaign.

Going further down on the Campaigns page, you’ll see the different metrics of your campaigns. 

For example, you’ll find the Cost and Revenue in this report. You’ll also see the Ecommerce Conversion Rate, Bounce Rate, Sessions, etc. for your campaigns. 

Similarly, you can analyze and compare the results of different campaigns to increase their effectiveness. 

For example, the bounce rate of a smart campaign can be considered good even if it’s around 80%, but the bounce rate of a shopping campaign will be considered good only if it’s really low.

You can definitely obtain revenue-related information from your Google Ads account. But when you analyze the reports with your Google Analytics account, you can make more informed decisions as you have a holistic view of data.

As link builders, we can get a bit “stuck in our ways”. Sometimes we focus too much on the technical aspects of building links and forget that link building should be a creative endeavor.

By allowing ourselves to be creative we begin to realize there are numerous way to build links through a multitude of channels. One such channel is offline, in the “real” world.

Although links exist online, it doesn’t mean we can’t utilize offline strategies to build links. One of the best ways to build links offline is through events, and there are a number of ways to do this.

Host an Offline Event

One of the best ways to build links offline is through hosting your own event.

While links are extremely valuable in terms of SEO, it’s simply not feasible to host an event just for the sake of building some links. But there are a number of other viable reasons to host an offline event, and if you already have one planned there’s no reason you can’t build some great links as well, especially if online visibility is important to your company.

However, these links don’t come easily and much like with traditional link building, you have to do the necessary work. So let’s go through all the different types of events you might already have planned and highlight the potential link opportunities.

Host a Small Local Event

If you’re a small business, it likely makes more sense for you to host local events.

For building links, the main consideration is who you will invite. Some people who may offer link opportunities include:

Prominent Bloggers and Local Influencers

Not only will those who interview you link to you, but others in the industry will often link to the interview as well – which only further increases the value of your links. This strategy only works if you are already viewed as an authority within your niche.

Here is an example of an interview Danny Sullivan did ahead of his conference (SMX West), which provided him with a link from Moz to his site (Search Engine Land).

Give Away Merchandise

These large events are the perfect place to give away branded merchandise.

Conferences are great for giving away merchandise because the majority of those attending will be within your niche or industry – or at the very least, interested in your industry. These are the people who you want talking about your company, as they typically share the same audience and often have their own websites.

By giving these people merchandise you can get them talking about your company, which not only means brand exposure, but can also lead to a link.

The key here is to give away things that people actually want and would be excited to receive. Give away something that has the potential to create conversation – something unique, that people would want to tell others about (and provide a link in the process).

There is typically a lot of merchandise given away at conferences so it can be hard to stand out,  and I certainly wouldn’t suggest giving someone merchandise and subsequently asking for a link. However, if you give away something that excites people, they will want to talk about it.

Attend an Offline Event

Much like hosting an offline event, similar link building opportunities are available through simply attending an offline event.

For example, you can speak at an event you attend, and get links from being listed as a speaker. Here is a link I got from speaking at SES San Francisco in 2012:

You can also get links from others covering your presentation. Here is another example of a link I received from Advanced Web Ranking, as part of their coverage of SES San Francisco 2013:

Networking at these events can also provide you with quality links. Find potential partnerships, build relationships with vendors, join an association – all of these can lead to links. Simply interacting with another company in a notable or memorable (and positive) way can sometimes lead to a great link.

Finally, you can write a review of the event and your experiences. There will always be an audience of people who wanted to attend the event, but were unable to. If you write an in-depth review of the event, people within this audience are likely to share your review, often by linking to it.
