How To Install Drivers In Ubuntu

If you recently moved to Ubuntu from Windows or macOS and are looking for a way to install drivers in Ubuntu, you have come to the right place. We have added 4 detailed methods to update drivers in Ubuntu, right from downloading additional drivers to installing Nvidia’s latest graphical drivers. Install Drivers in Ubuntu (2023)

In this tutorial, we have added 4 ways to install drivers in Ubuntu. From updating additional drivers to moving to the latest branch for bleeding-edge updates, we have covered everything. You can expand the table below and move to any section you want.

Note: The below methods have been tested on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) build, and they work flawlessly well.

In case you are unaware, drivers on Ubuntu or Linux are directly built into the kernel, and they are handled by the system automatically. So whenever the kernel is updated, drivers are also patched immediately. Unlike Windows, you don’t need to manually find and install each of the drivers.

1. First of all, open the App Launcher on Ubuntu and open “Software and Updates“. You can also directly open “Additional Drivers”.

2. Next, move to the “Additional Drivers” section. Here, you can see that it’s already using the recommended driver (proprietary and tested) for my Nvidia GeForce GT 730 graphics card.

Install Drivers in Ubuntu From Terminal (CLI Method)

1. If you wish to update drivers in Ubuntu from the Terminal, well, you can do so using a bunch of commands. First off, open the Terminal from the app launcher or by pressing the “Ctrl + Alt + T” shortcut.

3. Here, you can choose which driver to install. For example, to install the latest recommended driver which is nvidia-driver-470, run the command in the below fashion.

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470

or

sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:470

4. You can also run the below command to install all the recommended drivers automatically in Ubuntu.

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

4. After the installation, reboot your computer and you will move to the latest stable version. Run the below command to check the current driver version.

1. Open the Terminal in Ubuntu and run the below command to add the graphics driver PPA.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

2. After that, run the below commands to update all the packages.

3. Now, execute the below command and it will list out all the latest drivers including both stable and beta builds. However, in my case, 470 is the latest driver, superseding even the beta build which has a version number of 465. So I can comfortably stay on 470.

4. If a new version displays for your graphics card, you can run the below command to install the beta Nvidia drivers. Just replace 470 with your latest beta build.

1. First off, open Nvidia’s website and enter your graphics card detail. Choose “Production Branch” for stable and “New Feature Branch” for beta drivers.

2. On the next page, download the Nvidia driver for your Ubuntu system. It will download a file in .run format.

4. Move to the “Permissions” tab and enable “Allow executing file as program“.

Note: I have SSHed into the Ubuntu computer from my Chromebook to capture the screen. It may look a bit different on your system.

6. In the text console mode, enter your Ubuntu username and password and log in. After that, run the below command to disable the graphical server.

sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target

7. Now, unload the Nvidia driver that is currently in use by running the below command.

sudo modprobe -r nvidia-drm

sudo sh filename.run

10. Once the installation is done, execute the below command to enable the display server.

sudo systemctl start graphical.target

11. You may have to perform one more step. Run exit to close the current session and press “Ctrl + Alt + F2” to bring back the GUI interface.

12. Now, restart your computer, and the Nvidia driver in Ubuntu should be upgraded to the latest version.

How To Install Unsigned Drivers In Windows

Any hardware devices attached to your Windows system require you to install hardware drivers to work properly. The hardware drivers have low-level access to your Windows system so that they can work as they should. Since the drivers get access to the kernel, Windows requires those drivers to be officially signed. This means Microsoft tries to block any attempt to install unsigned drivers in Windows.

However, there will be times when you need to install unofficial drivers, unsigned drivers, or even old drivers with no digital signature. It’s possible but not quite as easy as installing signed drivers.

Note: Checking driver signatures is a security feature and disabling it is not recommended. Only install unsigned drivers from trusted sources. Always back up your computer fully before proceeding and ensure you’ve created a recovery drive. An untrusted driver could render your PC unusable without a complete format.

There are three different ways to install unsigned drivers in Windows. Each works, so pick the one you feel most comfortable using or whichever works best for you.

1. Install Unsigned Drivers From Advanced Boot Menu

The easiest way to install unsigned drivers is to use the Windows Advanced Boot menu. To do that:

Select the “Troubleshoot” option in the Advanced Boot menu.

In the Troubleshoot section, select “Advanced Options.”

Select “Start-up Settings.” The Startup Settings option will allow you to boot your Windows system in different modes.

Since we need to install unsigned drivers, press F7 on your keyboard to select the seventh option: “Disable driver signature enforcement.”

As soon as you select it, your system will boot into Windows. You can then install unsigned drivers in Windows without issues. After installing, restart your system, and the Driver Signature Enforcement will be automatically enabled from the next reboot.

If you ever want to install another unsigned driver, you have to go through the above process again. This method is ideal if you just need to install an unsigned driver once or rarely.

2. Install Unsigned Drivers by Enabling Test Mode

Another way to install unsigned drivers in Windows is to enable the Test Mode. The good thing about this method is that it will stay enabled until you manually turn it off — a pretty useful way if you are testing different drivers.

To begin, open your Start menu and type “command prompt.” Select “Run as administrator” under Command Prompt.

The above action will open the Command Prompt with admin rights, which are required to enable Test Mode. At the prompt, copy and execute the below command:

bcdedit

/

set

testsigning on

You’ll see that the command has been successfully executed. Just restart your system, and you’ll be booted into Test Mode. When you are in Test Mode, you can install the unsigned drivers. Moreover, you will also see a watermark, something like the one in the screenshot below, to let you know that your Windows system is in Test Mode.

Once you are done installing the driver, it is important that you turn off Test Mode. To do that, use the below command as an admin and reboot your system:

bcdedit

/

set

testsigning off 3. Install Unsigned Drivers by Disabling Integrity Checks

You can also disable the integrity checks to install unsigned drivers in Windows. Disable integrity checks by opening the Command Prompt as admin (Start, search for Command Prompt, select “Run as administrator”), and execute the below command:

bcdedit

/

set

nointegritychecks off

After executing the command, just restart your system, and you can install the unsigned driver on your Windows machine.

Just like with Test Mode, it is important to reverse the changes you made. To re-enable integrity check, execute the below command as an admin in the command prompt:

bcdedit

/

set

nointegritychecks on

Now, restart the system, and you are good to go.

Frequently Asked Questions 1. Are unsigned drivers safe?

It depends on the source. If you trust the source, it’s generally safe to install unsigned drivers.

Windows blocks unsigned drivers by default for a couple of reasons: they can be a source of viruses and they may not function correctly.

To be safe:

Set a System Restore point before installing. This will let you roll back your system to before you installed the driver. Obviously, this won’t help much in the event of a virus, but it will undo any system changes.

Always scan the downloaded driver with your anti-virus software first. You can also check the site and download link using

VirusTotal

. Also, watch for any common red flags that the site isn’t safe.

2. What’s special about signed drivers?

Signed drivers are verified to work with your system. They’ve been checked and should work without any issues with your specific Windows version.

Unsigned drivers haven’t been verified to work with your version of Windows or even Windows at all. Think of it as similar to installing an app made for Windows 7 on Windows 11. It might work fine or cause glitches or not work at all.

Also, with unsigned drivers, you don’t know when they might have been changed, which makes it even trickier to determine if they’re right for your system.

3. How can I identify unsigned drivers on my PC?

You can use the in-built Signature Verification Tool (sigverif.exe) to scan your system and ensure all drivers are verified and haven’t been altered.

Press Win +R to open the Run tool. Then, type sigverif.exe and press OK. Follow the prompts to run the sigverif tool.

This is also a great way to ensure only the unsigned drivers you’ve authorized yourself are installed. Malicious drivers that have installed behind the scenes can show up on this scan too.

PUBG is the game that redefined the ”battle royale” genre and immediately gathered an enormous player base.

However, the game is far from flawless and it seems that, besides the usual bugs, we have more than a few issues that completely ruin the gaming experience.

One of those is a common crash followed by the ”Out of video memory” prompt.

If you’re frequently affected by this debilitating error, make sure to check the steps below and we’ll, hopefully, resolve it with joined forces.

How can I fix  the “Out of video memory” error in PUBG? 1. Make sure your configuration is up to the task

If you didn’t get the memo, we must inform you that PUBG is one of the most demanding games out there. If you want to run it at an optimal FPS value, you’ll be needing a gaming rig, to say the least.

Top-notch graphics are a must, especially since this error refers to Video Memory which comes with GPU. On the other hand, if you reduce settings to a bare minimum, your CPU will take most of the pressure.

Here are the minimum and recommended requirements for Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds:

As you can see, these are some rather intimidating configurations so make sure to meet the enlisted requirements and optimize the game settings to your configuration capabilities.

2. Check the in-game Graphics configuration

While we are at it, there are certain Graphics options you should reconsider reducing in order to fix issues with Video Memory.

As we already stated above, the more you increase your graphics settings — the more GPU will have a hard time rendering it. On lower settings, the CPU takes over UnrealEngine 4.

These are the settings you should consider disabling or decreasing to lowest values:

Anti-Aliasing – Very Low

Post Processing – Very Low

Shadows – Very Low

Texture – Medium (or Low)

Effects – Very Low

Foliage – Very Low

View Distance – Low

Also, disable Vsync and Motion Blur by unchecking the boxes at the bottom.

These should help you reach at least a reasonable performance while, hopefully, avoiding Virtual Memory crashes in the future.

In addition, some players recommend restarting the game after every match is finished in order to avoid memory leaks.

3. Update GPU drivers

However, as a plentitude of reports suggests, some users with ultra-premium GPUs with more than 10 GB of GPU VRAM are experiencing similar crashes. Which points towards drivers.

Without the proper functioning drivers, your GPU performance will suffer. No matter how powerful it is.

So, make sure to install proper drivers before you move to alternative steps. And we refer to official drivers, not the ones provided via Windows Update. Here’s how to do it simply:

Navigate to one of these official support sites and download proper drivers:

Install driver and restart your PC.

Grab the League of Legends Installer

Head over to the League of Legends Lutris page. If you’re familiar with Lutris, you know that these pages contain the installer links for each game. In the case of LoL, there are actually a few options. Unless you’re running an older version of Linux, use the “Latest Version” script. It comes with the most recent performance fixes.

Start the Install

Lutris will open to begin the install. It will start by asking if you’d like to begin the install and install the recommended version of Wine.

Lutris will start by getting the correct version of Wine and installing it. In the process, it will also ask you where you want to install League of Legends. Unless you have a specific preference, the default will usually work fine.

Continue through the installation accepting the defaults unless you have a different preference. Everything should run smoothly with the preset options.

Launch the Game

When the installer is done, it will ask if you’d like to create shortcuts for LoL and provide you with an option to launch the game. Go ahead and start it up.

League will start by updating itself and getting ready to run. This will take a few minutes, so be patient. It also might not look super polished at this point. Don’t worry, as that’s completely normal.

After LoL is done updating itself, it will launch the login screen. The screen will pop up much like it does on Windows, allowing you to sign in to your account. Sometimes back they raised the price heavily and then reduced again to reasonable rate to back in the competition. In our earlier article, we have explained how to install WordPress in SiteGround primary domain. Since the StartUp plan supports only one website, many users think they can install WordPress only one time. However, you can create subdomains and install WordPress under the same hosting plan. In this article, we will explain how you can do that.

The entire process consists of five steps in SiteGround.

1. Creating Subdomain in SiteGround Site Tools

First step is to create a subdomain under your primary registered domain.

Login to your SiteGround hosting account and go to “Websites” tab.

This will take you to the dashboard section of the custom hosting panel called Site Tools.

You will see a “Subdomain … is created” success message along with a button showing “Install Application”. However, do not install application at this point on your subdomain.

2. Installing SSL for Subdomain

Open your subdomain in a new browser tab to check the status. You will see an under construction page like below indicating the site is in making.

Check the subdomain website address in the browser’s address bar. In our case, it shows the secured pad lock symbol. But in most cases, it will show “Not Secure” warning. We have a wildcard SSL and hence the subdomain is automatically assigned to a trusted certificate with the primary domain. However, if you do not have wildcard SSL, then you may see “Not Secure” message as the subdomain uses HTTP protocol. You may also find the page shows privacy error indicating connection is not secure and SSL certificate is missing.

This will add your subdomain in the queue and start installing the certificate. Though this happens instantly, sometimes Let’s Encrypt SSL installation may take time. Make sure to check the status under the “Manage SSL” section and confirm that your subdomain has a valid certificate. You can also open the subdomain in a browser tab and confirm it connects with secured HTTPS and shows the padlock icon.

3. Installing WordPress in Subdomain

You have to fill up details in few sections to finish the installation.

Under “Application Setup” section, select your subdomain as “Domain” from the dropdown. After that select your preferred language for the admin panel and select “Main folder” as installation path. Alternatively, you can choose to install on subdirectory and enter the folder name. This folder will be created under your subdomain and WordPress will be installed in that directory.

Enter your username, password and email for logging into our WordPress admin panel under “Admin Info” section. These are the credentials you need for logging into the WordPress administrator dashboard.

Most of the time you will see “Not Secure” in the browser address bar when viewing your admin panel. This happens even though you have installed SSL certificate on subdomain.
