Set Walking Directions as Default in Apple Maps for iOS

Many urbanites and city dwellers get about by walking, the oldest form of transportation in existence. If you’re one of us who often gets about a concrete jungle by propelling your legs in a forwardly direction, you’ll be pleased to know that the popular mapping applications in iOS have you covered. Both the default Maps app from Apple and Google Maps offer walking directions, though using each is slightly different.

Notice this is “set” walking directions, because with Apple Maps you can set the default direction choice to be walking, which is excellent if you spend most of your time in a walkable downtown region.

Open the “Settings” app and choose “Maps”

Scroll down to “Preferred Directions” and tap on “Walking” to set foot traffic as your new default preference

Exit out of Settings and go back to the Maps app for changes to take effect

Directions will now be provided with a preference by foot travel, and it’s usually pretty good, providing sidewalk shortcuts and foot/bike overpasses when possible. For the most part, this is really best for a city, and it’s a largely fruitless endeavor beyond the obvious for smaller towns, which often set the walking directions as the same as driving directions.

This can also be useful to toggle on for those visiting a downtown region for the day, say if you have a car parked in a garage and have spent the day walking around, since it can make the pin drop find-your-car trick more appropriate for getting back to the car by foot.

Get Walking Directions in Google Maps for iOS

Google Maps handles walking directions a bit different than Apple Maps, with no general default setting other than what you last used. This means if you last looked for driving directions, that will be your default, or if you last used walking, then foot travel would be the default. Anyway, using Google for walking directions is super simple:

Open Google Maps and search for a destination, or tap and hold to drop a pin

Tap the walking guy icon at the top of the screen to toggle walking directions on

Now tap the desired route from the list to draw walking directions on the map

Google Maps seems to have more walking data than Apple Maps, and you’ll sometimes get slightly different and often better walking directions for some locations, particularly smaller cities. Google also lets you drop a destination into the middle of nowhere, meaning no where near a road at all, and it will try it’s best to give you walking directions to get there – which can mean travel through parks, trails, walkways, and other corridors that may be otherwise not quite obvious.

Even for driving I generally recommend having both Google Maps and Apple Maps installed on iPhones, since adding Google Maps doesn’t take up much space, and, let’s face it, it’s still more accurate for many places anyway. The accuracy gap is shrinking, but urban folks will still often be better served by Google Maps, and thus it really does deserve a place on the iPhone of anyone who plans on spending a lot of time walking about in a city, even if it’s just for vacation. Another helpful trick is to remember that many city streets are laid out on a grid, sometimes in obvious north/south/east/west fashion, which can makes reorienting the maps to be pointing north particularly helpful when walking around.

Verizon To ‘Definitely, Maybe’ Get Iphone In January

The iPhone might be coming to Verizon in January? Can it be true? The rumor that never dies has popped up again thanks to some vague language in a filing to the SEC, and yet another rumor that Apple is producing Verizon-compatible chipsets for the iPhone. It’s hard to know for sure what to believe when it comes to the future of Apple’s smartphone, but there’s nothing like a little iPhone rumor-mongering to kick off the week so let’s dive in.

iPhones? We Don’t Need no Stinking iPhones.

AT&T discussed its exclusivity arrangements at great length in its recent quarterly filing with the SEC, and first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The filing has sparked speculation not so much for what it said about the iPhone, but what it didn’t say.

When discussing its wireless business, the carrier said it offered a wide range of devices including 18 smartphones. The reason for offering so many phones, the company said, was to reduce “dependence on any single handset.”

If you’ve been following tech news for more than five minutes it doesn’t take much to conclude that by “dependence on any single handset,” the company likely means “dependence on the iPhone.” AT&T may offer a variety of other handsets, but the iPhone is the most popular device the company sells. There’s also no question the company is best known as the exclusive iPhone carrier in the United States.

After declaring the company doesn’t depend on one handset, AT&T’s report gets even more suggestive. “As these exclusivity arrangements end,” the report says, “we expect to continue to offer such handsets…[and] do not expect any such terminations to have a material negative impact on our Wireless [sic] segment income.”

CDMA in the Pipeline

While AT&T may be preparing for the end of iPhone exclusivity, Apple is reportedly ramping up production of CDMA chipsets for the iPhone, according to TechCrunch. CDMA is the cellular network standard used by Verizon, while current versions of the iPhone are made for GSM networks. So Apple would to produce a modified iPhone for Verizon, and that could take as long as six months.

TechCrunch’s report is based on anonymous sources that purportedly have deep knowledge of Apple’s supply chain. The report contends that Apple has ordered “millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets” to produce Verizon-compatible iPhones. The handsets would reportedly be finished by December in time for a January launch.

Here We Go Again

Of course, this isn’t the first time rumors of a 2010 or 2011 Verizon iPhone launch have surfaced. In June, Bloomberg Businessweek also reported the iPhone would be on Verizon by January. Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal said Apple would start manufacturing iPhones for Verizon by September. In May, there were also rumors about a late summer launch. But given the long history of iPhone-Verizon rumors it’s probably wise to take these latest rumblings with a healthy dose of doubt.

Then again, rumors about a Verizon iPhone are starting to take on a life of their own. The last time that happened in the Apple rumor mill, the company launched the iPad.

With the new Touch Drive mode enabled, all you have to do is take care of nitro boost and drifting. Yes, the car will automatically accelerate and turn for you. As always, you can also unlock and customize more vehicles by scoring more wins either in the multiplayer or the campaign mode. The game animations are super fun and the iPhone XS never drops a phone even at the highest quality which makes the game shine. 3. chúng tôi – True Racing

Eden Games, the studio behind Gear.Club, is popularly known for bringing out games like Test Drive Unlimited on consoles and PCs. So, it’s hardly a surprise that chúng tôi has made it our list of best racing games for iOS. Right off the bat, the game looks gorgeous regardless of the iOS device that you’re playing the game on.

Coming to the gameplay itself, chúng tôi takes a simulation-style approach that coupled with a free-to-play model. You’ll be dealing with a roster of some of the best racing cars in the world, and they look just as exotic as they look in the real world. You’ll also have to fine-tune your car if you want to stay on top of your game while competing with some elite players. The game offers a really good campaign mode that’s packed with action and you can also check out the event if you are up for some fast-paced action.

4. Reckless Racing 3

Reckless Racing 3 is the sequel to the well known “Reckless Racing, and Reckless Racing 2” series. The game keeps the same gameplay as its predecessors, and is a lot of fun. There are a number of game modes that you can play, including the “Career” mode, as well as “Arcade”. In the arcade mode, you need not worry about the car you have, or any upgrades to it. You simply need to end up on the podium, in order to unlock the next levels.

Quite simply, if you’re only looking for straight-up casual fun, then Arcade mode is meant for you. However, the career mode offers a lot of features that one would expect from a full featured racing game. You can buy new cars, upgrade existing cars, and do a lot more in the “Garage”. You need to keep your car performing well, in order to progress through the career mode. The graphics in the game are quite nice to look at, and the gameplay itself is a lot of fun. It did take me a couple of races to get the exact turning mechanism right, but once you get past that, you’ll love the game. It is one of the hardest, funnest, and best racing games for iPhone that you can play.

5. Real Racing 3

The game comes with a career mode as well, where you start off with a car, and you need to win races in different segments, to earn cash for buying new cars, and upgrading your existing ones. The logic is pretty much the same as other racing games. The cars automatically handle braking when approaching turns, and drifting if you turn them too sharply. However, you can tap anywhere on the screen to manually brake, should you find the need for it. The game is free, and you should definitely try it out for some realistic looking races on your iPhione.

8. Trials Frontier

Trials Frontier is a very different kind of racing game, when compared to the rest of this list. For starters, it’s bike racing. But that’s not the difference I was talking about. Trials Frontier is a racing game with a story. In the game, you start off simply riding through tracks, while the game teaches you the basic controls. Later, the story begins, and you start off at a village, where the people need your help against another biker. You can visit different places in the village, and find people who will then give you missions to complete on your bike. On your way, you will meet the antagonist of the story multiple times, and your only aim, is to beat him on the track.

The game is really very well balanced, and it requires quite a lot of concentration to play. You need to be aware of when to accelerate your bike, and when not to. You’re also in-charge of leaning forward, or backward on your bike, to make sure you land properly after taking one of the many jumps in every track. The single player campaign gets a bit repetitive after a while, but the game itself is still kinda fun to play.

9. Traffic Rider

If you want to get a taste of arcade-style motorcycle driving, then Traffic Rider is the game to play. The game is a bit old, but it’s one of the best first-person motorcycle game on the App Store. It even made it to Apple’s Best of 2023 list.

As the name suggests, Traffic Rider sees you as a bike rider who rides through congested traffic. Your objective is to blaze through the traffic without hitting vehicles on the way, for which you’ll be rewarded points. You’ll get a bigger bonus for dodging oncoming traffic. You can use these reward points to buy new motorcycles or upgrade your existing whip. Traffic Rider offers an exciting career mode that offers a variety of fun missions and game modes that worth playing.

Boasting fascinating west coast locations coupled with pretty realistic driving physics, it allows you to race heart’s liking. But how well does this car racing game for iOS stand up on the customization front?

Well, Rebel Racing has looked quite good to me on the customization front. So, if you don’t mind some learning curve, you can craft stunning cars that can be the envy to everyone. What’s more, the game also offers you a chance to grab a lot of goodies which can help you scale heights and rule the leaderboard as a decorated car racer.

13. Highway Rider

Should you wish to indulge yourself with a thrilling motorcycle racing game, Highway Rider is the one you shouldn’t fail to give a shot. One of the highlights of this game is the intense multiplayer mode where you can showcase your racing prowess and unlock precious rewards. Just in case you don’t want to get into the multiplayer racing battle, there is an exciting fugitive mode where you will need to race against everything/everyone coming your way.

Whether it’s outrunning the angry cops or breaking the barricades, the fugitive mode will offer you the license to break all the rules so long as your speeding motorcycle doesn’t crash out. Beyond gaming, Highway Rider also offers you the desired freedom to customize your bike so that it looks standout. Not just that, you also get the option to choose from multiple characters when you start out. Everything considered; Highway Rider is an exciting racing game for iPhone and iPad, which you would love to go after during your free time.

14. Beach Buggy Racing

If a fun-loving racing game is what you are after, Beach Buggy Racing could be a great contender. In this kart-racing game, you get a chance to race against unique drivers each with charismatic abilities. So, it doesn’t matter how skilled you are at driving, you will need to come up with a smart strategy to outrun your rivals. And this is where this game becomes so intriguing.

Since it also offers rewards, your tireless efforts will always seem worth it. In a nutshell, “Racing in car” is one of the best casual car racing games that you can try out on your iOS device.

How To Use Google Maps: Features For Businesses

Google Maps is packed full of features to improve the local search experience for users as well as businesses who rely on the platform to reach customers.

Over the years, Google Maps has become the primary tool people use for finding driving directions, checking traffic conditions, and looking up locations with Street View.

There’s a lot more business owners can do with Google Maps beyond these everyday features. Here’s a look at some of the top features for businesses and how they can be a useful part of your marketing strategy.

How to Message Customers From Google Maps & Search

Google provides messaging capabilities in Maps and Search to facilitate easier communication between businesses and their customers.

Businesses with a verified profile can now message customers directly from the Google Maps app. Messages from customers will appear in the business messages section in the updates tab.

Messaging can be turned on or off from the settings panel of the Google Maps and Google My Business apps.

Google will soon add the ability for businesses to see and respond to customers on desktop by adding messages directly in Search.

Customers can already utilize business messaging from search results when viewing a Google My Business profile.

The example below shows what the new “Message” button looks like on a business post.

How to View Google Maps Performance Insights

Google tracks key marketing metrics within the performance insights of Google My Business.

These insights track how well a business is performing by measuring the number of customer engagements initiated from Maps and Search.

In addition, the performance insights show business owners which queries people are using to find their listings in Maps and Search.

The dataset tracks the following information:

Total amount of searches that triggered your business profile.

Whether performance is up or down from last year.

A list of search terms people used to find your business profile.

How many times each search term triggered your business profile.

Other insights include data on how many customers are finding a business via Maps and how many are finding it via Google Search, and whether the business was found on a mobile or desktop device.

All performance data is available for up to six months.

How to Publish to the Google Maps Community Feed

A community feed in the Explore tab of Google Maps allows users to find the latest reviews, photos, and posts added to Maps by local experts, people they follow, and businesses serving food & drink.

Businesses in the food & drink industry can contribute content to the community feed by publishing a Google Post or updating their profile with new information.

That’s one more reason to keep business listings regularly updated if you’re in the food & drink industry. The more often you publish a post or add other types of content to your profile, the more often you may show up in peoples’ community feed.

How to Submit Imagery to Google Maps Street View

Google lets regular users contribute imagery to Street View using only their phones.

With the Street View app, users can record a series of connected images while they move down a street or path.

After the footage is recorded and published with the Street View app, Google will automatically rotate, position, and put the sequence of images together.

This feature may be useful for businesses in areas without the best street view coverage. It could also be used to submit updated Street View imagery of the outside of a business.

The Street View connected photos feature is available for people using the app with an ARCore-compatible Android device in Toronto, Canada, New York, NY, and Austin, TX, along with Nigeria, Indonesia, and Costa Rica.

More regions may be added in the future.

How to Build Authority as a Google Maps Local Guide

One of the ways business owners can build authority and show their commitment to helping the community is by becoming a Google Local Guide.

Google depends on Local Guides to write reviews, share photos, answer questions, add or edit places, and check facts on Google Maps. They’re rewarded with points and special badges.

Businesses cannot become Local Guides, but business owners can join the Local Guide program with a personal Google account. When they contribute tips to Google Maps, their name will appear with a distinctive Local Guide badge next to it.

Over time this can help business owners stand out as people who truly care about their local market.

To become a Local Guide, simply sign up with a Google account and select your current location. Then go ahead and start making contributions to Google Maps.

How to Find Accessible Routes for Customers in Google Maps

Business owners should always have solutions in place for customers with accessibility needs. That includes having accessible ways to visit the business’s physical location.

Customers can easily look up directions in Google Maps, but they’re not immediately provided with the most accessible directions.

Business owners can assist in that regard by using their website to list accessible routes from different areas of the city.

With the right settings, Google Maps can be used to find accessible directions. To access the “wheelchair accessible” routes in Google Maps:

Type your business’s address into Google Maps.

Tap Directions then select the public transportation icon.

Tap Options and select wheelchair accessible as a new route type.

Google Maps will then show a list of possible routes that take mobility needs into consideration.

How to Utilize Questions & Answers in Google Maps

Business owners can answer customer queries in Google Maps by visiting their business profile and replying to any submissions.

If there are no submitted questions, business owners can fill up the Q&A section themselves by asking questions while signed in to another Google profile. Just visit the business listing and tap the “Ask a question” button.

Google Maps doesn’t show the names of people asking questions, which means business owners can populate this section themselves and it will look organic to other customers.

How to Use Google Posts

Another way business owners can contribute content to Google Maps is through the use of Google Posts. Think of these as social media posts for Maps that customers see when they view a business listing.

Google Posts can be published by following the steps below:

Open the Google Maps app.

Make sure you’re logged in with the account you used to sign up for Google My Business.

Open your business profile.

Tap Promote and tap the type of post you want to create.

Choose which elements to add to the post. Options include photos, videos, text, events, offers, or buttons.

Tap Preview to see what the post will look like to other users.

Tap Publish when you’re satisfied with how the post looks.

How to Use Google Maps Offline

This last tip is sure to get business owners out of a jam if they find themselves in a location with a poor wireless signal.

Don’t let a lack of internet connection get in the way of meeting with a client or customer. Plan ahead by downloading Google Maps directions to view offline.

Before heading to an area that may or may not have a reliable connection, look up the area in Google Maps and tap the Download button at the bottom of the screen.

This will download a map of the entire area to the device, making it possible to get turn-by-turn directions while offline.

Get Notifications When Your Iphone Switches Wi

As you leave your home to visit over places, you probably bounce from Wi-Fi network to Wi-Fi network to save your cellular data. In some cases, your device automatically connects to known or trusted Wi-Fi networks, whether you want it to or not.

A new jailbreak tweak called NotifyWiFi10 by iOS developer ichitaso is a Wi-Fi notification management platform that alerts you every time your device connects to different Wi-Fi network. It comes with a slew of features for choosing what happens after connecting to certain ones.

After installation, you will begin to see notifications like the ones shown above when your device moves between Wi-Fi networks. These notifications let you know the SSID (Wi-Fi name), and in some cases, you might even see the local IP address inside of them.

Notification appearance depends on whether a network is blacklisted or whitelisted; this, as well as many other options, are configured from the Settings app under the new NotifyWiFi10 preferences pane:

Here, you can:

Toggle the tweak on or off on demand

Toggle sounds and vibrations for banner notifications

Force iOS to copy the SSID name to your clipboard upon notification

Save a history log of all Wi-Fi networks you’ve connected to previously

Choose to open Wi-Fi settings or NotifyWiFi settings when tapping on a banner

Choose up to 6 different Wi-Fi networks to whitelist

Choose up to 10 different Wi-Fi networks to blacklist

Force your device to connect only to whitelisted Wi-Fi networks

Display an alert message asking what to do when connecting to a blacklisted network

Manage notification dismissal settings

The whitelist comes in handy for known networks that you trust because you won’t get notifications when connecting to these networks; these may be networks you use all the time, such as at home or work. The blacklist is where you put un-trusted networks; your Wi-Fi is automatically turned off any time your device tries to connect to one of your blacklisted networks.

For the most part, NotifyWiFi10 is intended for those who care about their security more than the average Joe might. It aims to better communicate with you when your device jumps between Wi-Fi networks, which is something iOS normally does automatically in the background whenever they become available. To be clear, not everyone needs to this functionality; but for the handful that do, it can be useful.

On AT&T iPhones for example, the handsets are configured out of the box to connect to AT&T-based Wi-Fi hotspots around town, which are unsecured networks. This can be concerning to some, and NotifyWiFi10 helps keep you in the loop before you start using high-risk apps, such as banking and social media, on these kinds of networks.

Due to the nature of the tweak, it will be most meaningful to those who use multiple Wi-Fi networks from day to day rather than those who are either always at home or always at work using the same networks. With that in mind, it will be better for travelers than it will be for home-bodies.

If you’re interested in trying NotifyWiFi10, you can download it from Cydia’s BigBoss repository for $0.99. The tweak works on all jailbroken iOS 10 devices.
