A Blocked for security reasons error message appears when Gmail users try to attach certain file formats to their emails. Then the users need to find another way to send the files.
Gmail blocks numerous file types primarily to stop virus attachments. Users can’t attach EXE, DLL, DMG, VB, CMD, BAT, JAR, VBS, JSE, PIF, VDX, JSE, APK, INS, SCT, and MSI among other formats.
Also, one can’t attach programs, scripts, software installers, and batch files to Gmail emails.
On the other hand, Gmail doesn’t block clean ZIP and RAR archive formats. This is why some Gmail users are surprised when getting a Blocked for security reasons message for such files.
However, you can’t attach RAR and ZIP archives to emails if they include file types and formats Gmail blocks.
As such, archiving EXE and other files that Gmail blocks does not enable you to attach them to emails.
What to do if
Gmail is blocking ZIP files
/RAR archives?1. Try out compression software
WinZip can prove very helpful if you are looking for a smooth way to solve blocked RAR email attachment issues.
The actual compression can be done quickly using this tool, yet don’t you imagine that all that WinZip does is zip and unzip files?
It’s also your all-in-one solution for securing and sharing files. Therefore, when other similar tools fail at completing the process of sending RAR email attachments, WinZip excels at this chapter.
It simply reminds you that working with archives is convenient and will make the transfer process a lot easier when RAR archives are involved.2. Edit the file extensions included within the RAR archive
Changing the files included within the RAR archive to formats that Gmail doesn’t block is a quick workaround to take into consideration.
You can set up a new RAR archive with the modified file formats and attach it to an email, as described above.
Do keep in mind that the recipient will need to restore the files included within the RAR archive to their original formats.3. Send the RAR as a Google Drive link
This means you need to save the RAR in your GD storage. Then you can select to insert files from GD in Gmail.
One last note, you could also save the RAR to a file host, and then send a URL for the file to the recipient. This software guide provides further details for the best file-sharing applications.4. Consider using a different email client
Yes, we make this suggestion from the start, since there are many great email clients available that can replace Gmail.
And our top choice in this particular case is Mailbird. Currently, Mailbird is one of the most popular email clients focused on increasing productivity rates. The tool brings a lot of easy-to-set customizable features and options to serve this purpose.
This said, not only do you get all your emails and contacts from multiple accounts in one single place.
Mailbird also supports integration with the most popular email clients, as well as with a lot of productivity apps like Google Calendar, Twitter, or Asana.
Plus, the app is integrated with Degoo, which is another tool that saves you the time of archiving large folders or files to send via email.
What’s more, you don’t have to store the file locally on your device and you don’t need to download anything to perform this action. And the receivers don’t need a special account either.
⇒ Get Mailbird
So that’s how you can send a RAR file, and any other file, that Gmail usually blocks via email.
For getting a wider perspective on the topic, do not hesitate to take a look at our Email Hub.

All the popular email clients have size limits on the files that you can email to recipients. However, there are ways to send large files as email attachments despite those limitations.
File size limits vary depending on the email service. For example, Gmail, Yahoo, and AOL have a limit of 25 Mb per email. chúng tôi is limited to only 10 Mb. Even desktop email clients have limits. Microsoft Outlook only allows a file send of 20 Mb, and while Mozilla Thunderbird is unlimited, you may still experience file size limits depending on what email accounts you connect it to.
Table of Contents
The trick is to either shrink the file sizes using various utilities or bypass email itself as the primary method for sending the files.Compressing Files
If the file you’re trying to send is just above the limit (for example, a 30 Mb file on Gmail), you may be able to compress the file to just under the limit.
Most files, once compressed into a ZIP file, will reduce in size from anything like 10 to 75%, depending how much available space there is within the file data for the compression algorithm to do its magic. Read our other post that goes into detail on which compression program is best.
If the compression routine was able to shrink the file below the size limits of your email service, you can attach the file to your email. Also, be sure to read about the different types of compression formats.
Also, check out our video on YouTube where we cover how to ZIP a file and make it smaller:Splitting Apart Archives
If you are trying to send one large archive file that contains a lot of files and folders, you can always break that file up into smaller archives that are each under the email service size limit.
For example, take a ZIP file that’s just under 60 Mb. You won’t be able to send this file using Gmail or any other cloud email service.
Right and folders by selecting Extract All.
Next, and Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Next, copy all the individual files and folders you just extracted from the oversized
Repeat this process for as many files and individual folders as you can until the size of the new archive file you created is just under the size limit.
Repeat the process above to create another empty archive and continue copying more files and folders until each of those files is just under the limit. Create as many archive files as you need to in order to recompress all the files and folders from the original, oversized archive file.
Finally, you can send each of these files as individual emails, until you’re done sending them all.Send Files via Google Drive
Another approach is uploading the oversized file to a cloud share account like Google Drive, assigning rights for anyone with the link to view it (which is default), and sending the recipient the link to the file on Google Drive.
To do this, upload the oversized file to a folder in your Google Drive account.
on the file in Google Drive, and select Share.
In the Share with others window, next to Anyone with the link can view, select Copy link.
This will copy the Google Drive file URL to your clipboard.
Go back to your Gmail email message and select the insert link icon. Paste the Google Drive file link into the Web address field.
Select OK to finish. This will insert the link into your email message.
Select download the file from your shared Google Drive file.
Using this approach, it doesn’t matter how large the file is. You can send any file of any size in this manner.Use Gmail Google Drive Integration
An even faster way you can upload a large file and send the link is by using the integration that exists between Gmail and Google Drive.
If these are two services you use and you’re sending your email using Gmail, all you need to do is attempt to attach a file that’s larger than the 25 Mb.
Gmail will automatically upload the file to your Google Drive account with visibility for the email recipient. You’ll see a message notifying you of this.
When the upload is done, you’ll see the Google Drive link inserted into your email.
That’s all there is to it. This is the fastest way to send an oversized file via email, but again you need to have both a Gmail and a Google Drive account for it to work.Send Directly from Cloud
Another quick way to send an oversized email is by sending it from your cloud share account rather than from the email service itself.
This will open a Send Link window where you can type in the recipient’s email address and the email message you’d like to include.
Select Send to send the email with the link to the shared file automatically inserted.
This is a much faster way to send oversized files, and you don’t have to worry about splitting it up into smaller files or somehow shrinking it to under the limit.Use Your Hosting Anonymous FTP
If you have your own web hosting account, you can use the anonymous FTP feature that’s usually included with these accounts.
Check with your web hosting provider if you’re not sure if you have this feature enabled.
If it is enabled, when you’re logged into cPanel, just visit the FTP section and look for the username of the anonymous account. Select Configure FTP Client to see the server name that your email recipient can use to make the FTP connection.
All you need to do is use your own FTP client to upload your oversized files to the anonymous FTP folder inside your web hosting account.
The folder for this is usually called something like public_ftp.
After you send the FTP details to your recipient, they can use their own FTP client to connect to the anonymous folder and download the file from the public_ftp folder.
This is an approach you may need to use for very large files, such as very large video files that are many gigabytes in size.
The file transfer may take a while, but this is the kind of file transfer that FTP technology was intended for.Transferring Large Files via Email
As you can see, there are many ways to transfer very large files via email. The method that you choose really depends upon what services you have available, and the size of the file itself.
The archive approach is great if your files are just over the limit. But if you’re dealing with very large files that you can’t split up into smaller archives, then the cloud share method or the FTP approach may be your best option.
Saving email attachments is a great way to back up all those images, documents, music, and whatever else you’re emailed throughout the day. But doing it manually is not a fun process, you’re likely to miss a few over time, and you’ll use up valuable storage on your computer.
Table of Contents
There are two really great ways to automatically save email attachments to a cloud storage service. The first one we’ll look at uses the file storage service Koofr to both auto-save and store the attachments; it works from any email but your files can only be saved to Koofr’s storage service.
The other method is a bit more flexible in that you can pick a different cloud storage service, but it doesn’t work with all email providers.Using Koofr To Auto-Save Email Attachments
Name it something about attachments, because this is where all your email attachments will be gathered.
Hover your mouse over the new folder to find a button called Share. Select it, and then choose Receive files.
Pick Never in the expiration section.
Copy the email address at the bottom and then select OK.
All your attachments are stored in the folder you made above. Something to know about this procedure is that the emails are stored, too, not just file attachments. So it works as an email backup service too.
Unfortunately, you can’t choose to save only the attachments, so the folder could get cluttered fairly quickly.Automatically Saving Email Attachments With Zapier
Open the new Zap page. If you’re not logged in, you’ll have an opportunity to make an account.
Choose your email provider in the first text box (Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, and others are supported) and then New Attachment in the second one, followed by Continue.
Optionally test the routine by selecting Test & Review, or finish with the Test & Continue button.
Select the plus sign under Do this… to choose what should happen once an email with an attachment is found.
Find and select the cloud service you want to save email attachments to. Popular ones like OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Box are supported.
Under Choose Action Event, select what should happen. We’re using Google Drive for this example, so we’ll choose Upload File.
Sign into the cloud service provider when asked.
Optionally choose where within your account you want attachments saved.
For the File option, choose Attachment. Optionally fill out the rest of the fields, and then press Continue.
Optionally test the routine and then press Turn Zap On to enable it.
Using Zapier to automatically save email attachments doesn’t do anything to the original email. The message won’t be marked as read and the attachment and/or message won’t be deleted.Other Email Attachment Saving Methods
Zapier and Koofr are the best ways to automatically save email attachments to a cloud storage service, but we shouldn’t overlook other, not-so-automatic methods that are built right into some email provider websites.
With Gmail, for example, you can hover your mouse over an attachment and choose Save to Drive to instantly transfer it to Google Drive.
If you’re on chúng tôi select the cloud icon that shows up on attachments to save the file to OneDrive.
Yandex.Mail users can open an attachment and select save to Yandex.Disk.
There are three extensions you can install to Chrome to make this work:
Here’s how this works if you’re using it in Gmail to save email attachments to Google Drive:
Open the email that has the attachment.
Select the download button from the menu at the top.
Choose Save to Google Drive.
Choose a folder if you want, but make sure to pick Save only attachments from the drop-down menu.
Optionally change how the attachment is named, and then press Save.
As you can see, cloudHQ can also save the whole message if you’d prefer. Just change the Save settings option to do that.

The Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments error message appears when the users are trying to open an email with attachments.
This can happen due to many reasons including attachments that did not follow official attachment guidelines, and if the attachment appears to be a malware code.
If you are also troubled by this error, here is how to fix this error message in the Outlook client.
How do I unblock unsafe attachments in Outlook?1. Receive the file through a third-party file sharing service
To make this error message disappear you can ask the sender to upload the attachment to any third-party file-sharing site.
Use Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox and then share the sharable file link via email.
You can then easily download the file to your computer directly from the Cloud hosting services.
This way you don’t need to disable the security feature for Microsoft Outlook and also receive the file without any restrictions.2. Change the Outlook security
Another helpful workaround to make this message disappear is to disable the security feature for Microsoft Outlook from the Registry Editor. Many users have reported that this has solved the problem.3. Receive attachment in compressed format
One way to skip the security check-in Microsoft Outlook is to receive the file in compressed format.
There are a lot of free encrypting tools out there, but the best way is to get premium software. Thus, we strongly recommend the WinZip software.
This is the most popular file encryption and compression tool. It has many more features, and it has priority for developers.
As a matter of fact, the program offers more file management options, including sharing, compressing, and backing up files.
The encryption option allows you to zip your files with certified 128 or 256-bit AES encryption, to safely open attachments in Outlook, as needed.
In addition, with this compression tool, you can create zip files and save them directly from email attachments. From there, you only have to extract the files and view them with no issues.
You should therefore benefit from this practical way to manage all your files using tech-wise support every time you receive attachments in Outlook.
⇒ Get WinZip
As you can see, there are a couple of methods to safely open the attachments, so it’s completely up to you which one you’ll use.
