Back in Black
The new dark mode in tvOS 10 is a lifesaver if you use the new Apple TV in a dark environment (and who doesn’t watch movies and TV shows in the dark?). It’s not quite as dark as the theme from older Apple TVs, but the gray user interface works on the main screen as well as Apple’s tvOS apps and other channels.
The easiest way to turn dark mode on or off is to just tell Siri. Alternatively, you can navigate to Settings → General → Appearance → Light/Dark to toggle the two modes. Or if you’re like me, just turn on dark mode and never change it.
Smarter Siri Search
Whether you’re using the Siri Remote or Siri on the Apple TV Remote app for iOS, the voice assistant is usually the fastest way to do something on the new Apple TV. Starting with tvOS 10, you can search movies by topic. For example, you can tell Siri to “Show me movies about politics” to find political films.
Siri, Meet YouTube
Siri can search a lot of channels on tvOS at the same time, but YouTube is harder to catalog than iTunes or Netflix. tvOS 10 solves this problem by treating YouTube a little different from other channels. You can search YouTube with Siri in tvOS 10, but Siri simply takes you to the search page with the results for what you requested rather than showing possible videos in a special user interface. It’s not as polished as universal search, but it gets the job done. Try it with something like “Siri, search YouTube for 9to5Mac” and see what happens.
Welcome Home Siri
tvOS 10 is based mostly on iOS, but the first version lacked support for HomeKit, Apple’s home automation framework. Starting with tvOS 10, you can now control HomeKit accessories with Siri Remote on Apple TV. The only exception I’ve found so far is smart locks for security reasons so scenes with locks won’t work. My favorite scene to set from Apple TV is ‘Movie night’ which lowers the lights and sets the temperature.
New Apple Music Experience
It’s not nearly as dramatic as the overhaul on iOS 10, but tvOS 10 also includes a new Apple Music design. This includes a dedicated Search tab and a new layout in general.
Smarter Keyboard Detection
Apple TV Remote is a great iOS app for controlling the new Apple TV, and tvOS 10 goes a step further by prompting you on your iPhone or iPad when it detects you’re typing so you can enter text easily on your iOS device. This works even if you don’t have the new Remote app installed as long as you’re nearby and using the same iCloud account.
Photos With Memories
Photos on tvOS 10 is one of the many places you can find Apple’s new Memories feature which resurfaces collections of photos from similar places or dates. It’s basically a slideshow with Apple doing most of the work. They’re also customizable too so it’s fun to play around with before you share with others on the TV screen.
Just like on iOS, tvOS 10 can now automatically download new app purchases to your Apple TV when you first purchase them on another device. This works for both free and paid apps, but only when you first get a new app.
Developers, Developers, Developers!
Some of the biggest updates to tvOS 10 will come from developer apps. Apple highlights plenty of technologies that are now available to tvOS 10 apps:
ReplayKit to enable developers to record and live broadcast from their apps;
PhotoKit to allow third-party app access to photos and videos in iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Shared Stream;
HomeKit to create apps to control HomeKit devices from Apple TV;
App badging on the Home screen, to make it easier for users to know something new for them is available inside an app; and,
Game Center enhancements and support for up to four game controllers at a time.
Single Sign-On Plus More (Coming Later)
Finally, Single Sign-On is coming to the App Store on both iOS and tvOS. This feature will let you sign in to your cable provider once, then be logged in to each available channel automatically rather than going through the set up process with special codes and Safari over and over and over.
The App Store will even present you with a list of all the available channels for your cable provider so you don’t have to hunt for the right channels on your own. We haven’t seen this feature live yet, however, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for it.

Apple Releases Ios 8.3 With New Siri Languages, Diverse Emojis And More
In addition to releasing OS X 10.10.3 to the public this morning, Apple has also rolled out iOS 8.3. The update, which developers and members of Apple’s public beta program have been testing since February, includes a number of new features and improvements.
Among those new features is support for Wireless CarPlay, which allows folks with vehicles or head units that support the feature to use CarPlay without dealing with cables. There is also new, more diverse emojis, additional language support in Siri, Safari fixes and more.
Interestingly enough, the new firmware comes just a few days before the Apple Watch is slated to become available for pre-order, but there doesn’t appear to be any new Watch-specific features or changes. There was plenty of that in 8.2, though, which landed in March,
iOS 8.3 is compatible with the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s, 5c, 5, and 4s; the fifth-gen iPod touch; the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, original Air, mini 2, fourth-gen iPad, original mini, third-gen iPad and iPad 2. Jailbreakers should stay away until we learn of a successful 8.3 jailbreak.

Everything New In Ios 15.4 And Ipados 15.4
Earlier today, Apple seeded the first betas of iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 to developers. Unlike the previous update, this one actually has some new features mixed in. Which means it’s time to take a quick look at what’s new in the upcoming software update.
First, it’s worth noting that this is just how things look right now. With the first developer beta. As Apple has shown in the past, nothing is set in stone with the prerelease software. It’s possible that any and all of the new features added here in this beta might not make the cut for the next, and they might not make it into the final release.
Still, it’s good to see Apple adding some new elements to the upcoming iOS update, so let’s take a look at what’s new.
What’s new in iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4
Face ID with a mask: As was discovered soon after the beta’s release, Apple is tweaking the process to unlock an iPhone or iPad equipped with Face ID while wearing a mask. The company’s previous option, and one that’s still available, is to unlock your iPhone with Face ID by authenticating via an Apple Watch. However, with this new option Face ID will actually authenticate by taking note of unique features around the eye area to unlock a device. No Apple Watch required.
Universal Control: As mentioned above, some features get added and then removed in beta seeds. Universal Control is one such feature. It has cropped up in previous release betas, but we’re still waiting for the final version of the feature. And we might actually be nearing that result. With the latest betas of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, developers (and soon, public beta testers) can finally try out the feature that lets users use a single mouse/trackpad and keyboard with multiple devices, moving from an iPad to a Mac, and back and forth, pretty seamlessly.
Emoji: Apple has made it a thing to update the emoji available across its devices with spring updates, and this one’s no different. Apple is adding quite a few new emoji to the mix, with 37 in total, along with more than 70 new skin tone additions. There are more than 100 new additions, all told. That includes a brand new melting face, a face with a hand over the mouth, and others.
Keyboard brightness: This one’s meant for iPadOS 15.4. With it, users will be able to use a brand new option in Control Center to quickly and easily adjust the brightness of an eligible keyboard paired with the iPad.
Apple Card widget: There is a brand new widget getting added to the mix with iOS 15.4, and it’s designed for the Apple Card. With this widget in place, Apple Card customers will be able to not only see their spending activity, but also their total balance.
Notes in iCloud Keychain: With this feature, users will be able to attach notes to any password store in iCloud Keychain.

Tvos 11: How To Join The New Apple Tv Public Beta
This year tvOS joined macOS and iOS in offering a free public beta version of upcoming software updates, and Apple released the first tvOS 11 public beta for testing early last week. There aren’t a ton of flashy new features in tvOS 11, but there are a few nice improvements that you can start using now. Here’s how to start using the tvOS 11 public beta on your Apple TV and what you can expect:
Why should you consider running the tvOS 11 public beta? For starters, running the tvOS 11 public beta gives you an opportunity to try new features and provide feedback to Apple about the software update before it’s finalized and ships to all users. Apple doesn’t provide a Feedback app on the Apple TV, but you can use the Feedback app on iOS if you’re running the public beta version of iOS 11 on your iPhone or iPad.
There are also a few new features to start using on tvOS 11. Apple TV gains fast switching to AirPods just like on iPhone, you can automatically change the appearance from dark mode and light mode based on local sunset and sunrise times, and Home screens can sync between multiple Apple TVs running the iOS 11 beta.
In the future, tvOS 11 should also include AirPlay 2 support for multi-room audio playback and more, although the current betas do not yet include this feature.
So how do you join the tvOS 11 public beta? The process for tvOS is super easy compared to how iOS and macOS both work.

The only issue joining the tvOS 11 public beta in my experience was not seeing the ‘Get Beta Updates’ option despite using the same Apple ID with the chúng tôi website as iTunes, but using my other Apple ID (for iCloud) on the chúng tôi website resolved the issue immediately on my Apple TV.
tvOS 11 (so far) is a much smaller update than iOS 11 or even macOS High Sierra, so there is generally less stuff to break and less risk attached to running the public beta version. For me, I rely far less on tvOS running smoothly than I do iOS and macOS, too, so it’s OK if something is wonky here or there.
With that being said, I haven’t personally experienced any issues with either the public beta or developer beta versions of tvOS 11 yet (mainly using Netflix and Hulu apps) but your experience may vary so still proceed with caution.
As for major new features, we may have to wait for this fall for a possible Apple TV hardware update as Tim Cook hinted at much more to come with tvOS later this year, which could mean a new box may be required for more impressive features.

How To Use The New Preview Mode In Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager is an invaluable tool for digital marketers.
Google recently announced an overhaul of the Preview Mode in Google Tag Manager (GTM).
Preview Mode is an incredibly useful feature allowing you to determine if tags are firing properly and what data GTM is picking up on before you make any changes live.
The previous Preview Mode showed up in a pane at the bottom of your window and only tracked tags that fired and interactions that occurred on the page you were on.
The new Preview Mode opens in a separate tab and tracks tags and interactions for the duration of your session on the site, allowing you to see a more comprehensive overview.
This setup appears to merge features previously available in the Tag Assistant Chrome Extension into the built-in Preview Mode
1. Accessing Preview ModeTo access Preview Mode, look for the Preview button in the upper-right section of the top bar in GTM.
Here, you can enter the URL you want to preview.
Note that you’ll now see two separate new tabs:
One for Tag Assistant.
Another for the website itself that you’re previewing.
The left sidebar shows each page that you’ve accessed (each denoted by a colored box and an arrow dropdown to the left).
You’ll also see events numbered in the order that they took place (Container Loaded, DOM Ready, Window Loaded, etc.).
Each of these denotes an event the GTM monitors in order to fire triggers and collect data.
Which tags fired when.
What variables were associated.
What values are held in the Data Layer.
Any errors that occurred.
2. Examining Specific TagsFor instance, say that you want to double-check on your Google Ads Remarketing tag.
Properties, including the Conversion ID and fields for additional settings relating to the tag.
Where the tag fired (in this case when the container loaded).
Any firing triggers associated with the tag.
Blocking triggers preventing it from firing.
If you’re using a tag that correlates with specific variables (placeholders for values), you can see those listed in the Variables sections.
For instance, you might have set up scroll depth tracking to fire events when people reach certain points on the page.
You can see the associated variables for each “Scroll Depth” event. In this example, you can see:
Scroll Depth Threshold = 50
Scroll Depth Units = percent
Scroll Direction = vertical
This criteria means the event correlates with a user scrolling vertically to the 50% point on the page.
Inspecting variables can be a valuable area to check when you’re trying to set up triggers based on IDs/classes/etc. in your site.
This practice can determine if a trigger is actually seeing the right element in your site when troubleshooting your setup.
If you’ve set up custom events to fire in the Data Layer, you can check the Data Layer tab to see what’s currently held here.
Finally, check the Errors tab to flag any issues that are being flagged by GTM when tags don’t fire properly.
3. Ending Your Preview Session 4. Previewing Previous VersionsPlaying with different setups in your GTM account to get a tag to fire properly and want to compare an older version versus a new one?
You can select a previous version of your GTM container from the Versions tab.
You can also select Share Preview to send an option to someone else to preview a particular link and GTM container version.
Start Testing Your GTM SetupsWhenever you’re setting up tags and triggers in GTM, you should be testing before you push your changes live to ensure that everything is working as intended.
The updates to GTM’s preview mode allow marketers to more easily assess how tags fire across a multi-page session.
You can troubleshoot why tags aren’t working by looking at errors and the specific variables that show up.
