The most common Ethernet internet speeds range from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Despite the promise of Gigabit fiber connection by your ISP, if the requirement network equipment doesn’t support 1.0 Gbps (Gigabit) connection, you may only see a cap of 100 Mbps when you view the Details window of your Ethernet adapter in Windows 11 or Windows 10 or when you test the internet speed.

If your ISP promises you a Gigabit fiber connection (e.g. internet speed of 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps), but you still see that your Ethernet speed is capped at 100 Mbps, this guide will show you why and how you can resolve the issue.

If you have an internet plan that gets you an internet speed of more than 100 Mbps, but you are seeing a cap of 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps when you view the Details window of the network adapter in Windows 11 or 10, in most cases, the problem is caused by one of the following reasons.

When it comes to Gigabit Ethernet connection issue, it is almost always the Ethernet cable that is causing the problem. As the speed value is determined by the maximum capabilities of the networking hardware, including the Ethernet LAN cable, you need to use a cable that actually supports 1 Gbps.

For Ethernet connection of 1 Gbps or more, you need to have at least Cat5e cable which can support up to 1 Gbps, or Cat6 which supports up to 10 Gbps.

Defective, old, physically bent or broken LAN cable can cause random connection issues, including a sudden change from 1 Gbps to capping of 100 Mbps. The best way to troubleshoot this problem is to swap the existing Ethernet cable with a new or spare Cat5e or Cat6 cable and see if it the issue can be fixed.

Note that every cable used from your Router to your computer matters. For example, if you are using a Cat6 cable to connect your Router to a Hub, but with a Cat5 cable (or a defective cable) from the hub to your computer, you will see a cap of 100 Mbps Ethernet speed because the entire connection is limited by the maximum capability of the Cat5 cable in the connection.

Not all Ethernet adapter supports 1 Gbps Ethernet speed. Make sure that you have an Ethernet adapter that is capable of supporting internet speed of 1 Gbps or more. Check your existing Ethernet adapter and see if it is a Gigabit capable Ethernet adapter.

One of the most commonly used Ethernet drivers is the Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller. If you see this driver description in the Network Connection Details, it means that you have a Gigabit capable Ethernet controller.

The same goes to the Router. Although most modern routers have the capability to support more than 1 Gbps Ethernet connection, some older routers can support only up to 100 Mbps. Some routers claim they can support up to 300 Mbps Ethernet speed but in most cases the port will still be capped at 100 Mbps.

Note that Ethernet is different from that of WiFi. Some routers have Ethernet capabilities of 1 Gbps or more but with a WiFi speed or 300 Mbps or lower. If you also need to have high speed WiFi, you need to look for a router that can support the speed you want.

Some rare routers may have settings that control the Ethernet speed for each LAN port. Check your router to see if there is any setting that allow you to switch between 1 Gbit/s and 100 MBit/s. If there is, make sure they are set to 1 Gbps instead of 100 Mbps.

There is a setting called Speed and Duplex in Windows 11 or Windows 10 which allow user to configure the Ethernet speed. By default, this setting is and should set as Auto-negotiation. If your networking equipment is set up correctly, auto-negotiation will give you a 1.0 Gbps link speed automatically.

This setting is usually used to address issues where the adapter couldn’t establish the desired link speed with an older switch, or if the switch does not support auto-negotiation. In that case, you can try to manually set the Speed and Duplex setting to match the link partner.

Check if the Speed and Duplex setting is set as Auto-negotiation. If it isn’t, set it to Auto-negotiation and verify if the problem is resolved. Otherwise, change this setting only to match the link partner.

Search for “Device Manager” via Start and open it (Windows 11).

Expand the Network adapters category.

Select Advanced tab and select Speed & Duplex from the Property column.

The last resort would be to call your ISP to confirm that you are getting the internet speed you were promised. Ask them for help if there is any technical issue that cannot be resolved at your end (e.g. damaged fiber optic cable).

As my colleague Christian reported on Saturday, some Mac models have been plagued by non-working Ethernet ports after installing a new security update outed by Apple. Although a lot of modern Macs don’t even have an Ethernet port, many models still carry it and many people still love using a wired internet connection because it’s faster, more reliable, and more secure than a wireless network.

The security update, known as “031-51913 Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data 3.28.1,” reportedly blacklists the Broadcom BCM5701 driver used by the Ethernet port that comes standard on many Mac machines.

Fortunately, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for anyone experiencing issues with their Ethernet ports after installing this security update. Apple has issued a support document on Sunday that notes how to fix the problem. In this tutorial, we’ll go over the steps to fix the problem yourself.

How to fix your disabled Ethernet port

Since those of you with a disabled Ethernet port after installing the latest security update will probably want to get it up and running again, Apple has provided a fix for you.

The first thing you need to do is check to see what version of the “Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data” you have installed on your Mac is. Apple says that if you have version 3.28.1 installed, you’ll need to install the updated version, which is 3.28.2, to fix the problem.

There are two ways to do this – 1) connect to a Wi-Fi network to circumvent the Ethernet port altogether so you can install the update that way, or 2) if you rely on Ethernet, and cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network, you’ll have to roll back your most recent update so you can download the latest security update instead.

So with that being said, the first thing you need to do is check to see what version you have. You can do this by:

If the latest version you see is 3.28.1, then you need to move on to the steps below. On the other hand, if you see version 3.28.2 in your list like you do in the screenshot example below, then you’re already good to go and you have no further actions to take.

How to fix the problem if you CAN connect to Wi-Fi

If you’ve determined that 3.28.1 is the latest version on your system, you can fix the problem by connecting to a Wi-Fi network and downloading the update over the Wi-Fi network instead of via your now-broken Ethernet connection.

Apple notes the following steps to get yourself all up-to-date with this Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data debacle via Wi-Fi:

1) Launch the Terminal app from the Utilities folder found in your Applications folder, or from Spotlight.

2) Copy and paste the following command into Terminal, then press your Return key on your keyboard.

sudo softwareupdate --background

3) Enter your system password when prompted, then press your Return key on your keyboard.

4) Quit the Terminal app and restart your Mac from the  Apple menu in your Menu Bar.

That’s all there is to it. Your Mac should now have the updated Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data and your Ethernet port should be up and running again.

How to fix the problem if you CAN’T connect to Wi-Fi

If you have no Wi-Fi network at home, or your computer is too big and heavy to lug around to someone else’s house to connect to Wi-Fi, then you’ll have to take a different approach. This is because with the latest security update, your wired Ethernet connection isn’t going to let you connect to the internet to check for updates.

If you fall into this category, you’ve got a little more work to do. Fortunately, Apple still has a fix for you, and with a little bit of patience, you can get your Mac connected to the internet again. Just follow these steps:

1) Restart your Mac into Recovery Mode, then move on to step 2. If you’re not sure how to do this, we’ve got a great tutorial on how to restart into Recovery Mode.

2) Once you’re in Recovery Mode, you’ll want to select “Disk Utility” from your OS X utility list.

3) Select your main boot drive from the sidebar  list in the Disk Utility app – by default, it should be Macintosh HD, unless you’ve changed it.

6) Quit the Disk Utility app and launch the Terminal app while still in Recovery Mode.

7) Enter the following command in Terminal, then press the Return Key on your Mac. Enter your password if you’re prompted to.

rm -rf “/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext”

Note: Replace “Macintosh HD” in the command above with the name of your boot drive if it’s named anything different. The rest of your command will be the same.

8) Quit the Terminal app and restart your Mac from the  Apple menu in the Menu Bar.

9) When your Mac starts back up normally, your Ethernet port should work once again. Now you need to install the latest update that fixes the Ethernet problem and gives your Mac the latest security updates. To do that, Launch the Terminal app on your Mac, enter the following command, and press the Return key on your keyboard.

sudo softwareupdate --background

10) Enter your password when prompted, then press the Return key on your keyboard.

11) Quit the Terminal app and restart your regularly Mac from the  Apple menu in your Menu Bar.

Once your Mac boots back up, you should be up and ready to rock again with not only a working Ethernet port, but also with the latest security updates. Sure, it wasn’t as easy as simply connecting to a Wi-Fi network to fix the problem, but it wasn’t that hard, was it?

10 Tips You Probably Didn’t Know To Keep Windows 8 At Full Speed (Editorial)

Nowadays it’s all about speed, computers have to boot under 10 seconds, apps have to open in a snap of a finger, and web pages are consider slow if they take more than 1.5 seconds to load. There is no doubt that Windows 8 is a very fast operating system, you probably noticed the first time you boot your new or recently upgraded PC.

But didn’t you notice that over time your system gets slow? The simple tasks like booting up, launching an app, or accessing documents take longer than usual. Well, your system is getting slow, but this isn’t completely Windows’ fault, you also play a big roll on your PC slow performance. To turn things around and make Windows 8 faster, below there are ten different tips you probably didn’t know that can really help speed up your computer experience.

Installing Windows 8 from scratch

For those users moving from Windows 7 or XP, or even Vista, to Windows 8, you should consider to perform a clean install of the operating system, instead of using the upgrade path. Although, Windows 8 can do a better job migrating your stuff over, you are always better off starting from scratch. Upgrade to SSD

Solid-State Drive, or SSD for short, is one the best investments you can do to speed up your PC and to improve the overall performance of Windows 8 on your older hardware. A difference from traditional hard drives with rotating platters and mechanicals read/write arms, SSDs are much faster, thanks to their flash memory technology. Access to data is immediate and they consume less power because there aren’t any moving parts.
