Tiktok Mental Health Videos Inaccurate And Irresponsible, Say Experts

Concern over TikTok videos

A piece in The Washington Post opens with the example of a teenagers with 5.9 million followers, most of whom are teenage girls between 14 and 18.

17-year-old Issey Moloney […] connected with people online as the pandemic isolated her from real-life friends. Eventually, she started making her own content […]

Some of her clips are general, such as a short ode to the relationship between mentally ill people and pasta, while others address real diagnoses, such as “signs you might have BPD,” or borderline personality disorder. Sometimes, people ask her to address particular conditions. She tries to to research for at least a week, checking websites and message boards and interviewing by direct message people who have the particular diagnosis […]

She has no official training and often talks about feelings that are to some degree universal, such as anxiety and depression. Commenters occasionally accuse her of pathologizing just “being a teenager” or encouraging self-diagnosis.

Things are made worse when creators have financial motives to push a particular agenda.

Amateur creators hit back, saying that professional mental healthcare may be unavailable or unaffordable, and they are simply sharing their own experiences, and trying to help.

This is, undeniably, one of the reasons for the popularity of these pop-psych channels. But professionals point out that there is no way for a viewer to tell evidence-based content from the opinions or obsessions of someone with no genuine knowledge of the topic.

Broader mental health concerns with social media

The broader issue is that social media apps may themselves be contributing to mental health problems.

There’s the obvious issue of highly curated content, where influencers portray an “Instagram-perfect” image of themselves or their lives. When viewers compare their own real life to these highly selective slices of someone else’s apparent experience, that can surface feelings of inadequacy.

Even Instagram’s internal research has identified this as a significant problem.

An internal report describes a number of ways in which Instagram is harmful to as many as 20% of teenage girls using the app. It can increase anxieties about physical attractiveness, social image, and money, and even increase suicide risk, according to Facebook’s own research […]

“We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls,” said one slide from 2023, summarizing research about teen girls who experience the issues.

“Teens blame Instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression,” said another slide. “This reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups.”

Among teens who reported suicidal thoughts, 13% of British users and 6% of American users traced the desire to kill themselves to Instagram, one presentation showed.

But apps like TikTok can also send users into a downward spiral.

After 224 videos into the bot’s overall journey, or about 36 minutes of total watch time, TikTok’s understanding of kentucky_96 takes shape. Videos about depression and mental health struggles outnumber those about relationships and breakups. From here on, kentucky_96’s feed is a deluge of depressive content. 93% of videos shown to the account are about sadness or depression.

Trustworthy sources of help with mental health

If you find yourself struggling with mental health, there are a wide range of resources available to you. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing has collated a set of resources and helplines.

If you are considering suicide, or worried that someone close to you is, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (formerly the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) is available to help. You can simply call or text 988 from any phone in the US. In other countries, simply Google “suicide helpline” for local help.

Antitrust Investigation Nothing To Worry About, Say Experts, As Aapl Drops $6B

Investors were clearly a little worried about yesterday’s announcement of a ‘broad’ antitrust investigation into Apple and other tech giants. AAPL stock dropped 1%, wiping $6.8B from its market cap, with similar falls for Alphabet, Amazon, and Facebook.

Altogether, the lost value totaled $33B, but experts say that there’s little to worry about — and indeed, the announcement could even be considered good news for the companies …

The Justice Department didn’t name names, stating that at this stage it is a broad look at tech giants “to understand whether there are antitrust problems that need addressing.” However, given that the terms of the antitrust investigation are to look at the behaviors of “dominant tech firms,” it is clear that Apple is among those companies in the spotlight.

The Justice Department is opening a broad antitrust review into whether dominant technology firms are unlawfully stifling competition […]

The review is geared toward examining the practices of online platforms that dominate internet search, social media and retail services, the department said.

Many are seeing this as a threat to Apple, including Apple Card partner bank Goldman Sachs, which this month warned investors to avoid tech stocks which become subject to antitrust lawsuits.

However, experts cited by Business Insider disagree. An academic and antitrust lawyer were both of the view that this was a political announcement, the government keen to be seen to be doing something, even if it’s unlikely to lead to much.

“There is enormous political pressure on the agencies in Washington to be seen as doing something about big tech,” said Daniel Crane, a professor at the University of Michigan’s law school who focuses on antitrust issues. He continued: “This is their way of responding to the political pressure” […]

The announcement was an unusually public performance by a federal regulator which typically prizes confidentiality in such matters. That’s because it was basically a notice, intended particularly to a key figure in Congress, that the Justice Department will now be spearheading the antitrust investigations into the big tech companies, said David Balto, an antitrust lawyer in Washington D.C. with decades of experience working for and with competition regulators officials there.

For tech companies, the DOJs’ announcement was if anything, a subtle indication that the government may not come down as hard on them as it might seem, he said.

Indeed, Balto went further.

This is good news for the companies.

That’s because it’s the Justice Department, not the FTC, laying claim to the issue.

Having the Justice Department take point on antitrust review is actually a good thing for the tech companies, Balto said. The Department of Justice hasn’t filed a major suit under the Sherman Antitrust Act since the Microsoft case two decades ago. And the agency actually has fewer legal options when it comes to policing competition than does the FTC, he said.

“I don’t think anybody’s going to lose any more sleep that this is all with the Justice Department,” Balto said. “If anything, they’ll feel more comfortable in their legal position.”

For his part, Professor Crane says it doesn’t much matter which agency takes the lead — nothing much is likely to come of any antitrust investigation.

The courts have made it difficult for regulators to win antitrust cases, and even when such cases are successful, they tend to take many years to play out. Because of that, there’s little chance the big tech companies will be broken up anytime soon, despite the political pressure on them, he said.

“The kind of blockbuster, ‘let’s break them up’ case that is being trumpeted politically, I just don’t see that being in the offing,” Crane said.

Apple recently testified to Congress on the issue. The DOJ investigation isn’t the only antitrust battle facing Apple: iOS developers have filed a class-action suit over App Store practices; the Supreme Court gave the go-ahead for another one by customers; and the European Union is investigating an antitrust complaint made by Spotify.

Navy Seals Could Get New Airborne Backup. Here’s What The Planes Look Like.

On the edges of battle, a little air support can go a long way. That’s the logic behind a set of purchases from the US military announced May 14. Worth just shy of $20 million, the award is for one each of five different airplanes. The goal is finding the right match for supporting units like Delta Force or SEAL Team Six while flying on the bare minimum of support.

The US Special Operations Command, or SOCOM, awarded the $19.2 million contract. The organization coordinates actions between the various special operations forces of the other military branches. These missions include everything from drug trafficking interdiction to the Abbottabad compound raid to kill Osama bin Laden.

Much of modern warfare is built around big, coordinated formations of people and vehicles. From patrols of vehicles that are in radio contact with high-flying drones and distant artillery, to sweeping arcs of tank formations, much of war is planned around mutual support from an array of forces.

Special operations forces grew out of the missions once given to commandos in the wars of the 20th century—missions behind enemy lines that necessitated a smaller force operating with only what they could carry on their backs. In 21st-century warfare, this entails fighting away from other support, which means that small numbers can become a form of stealth instead of a weakness. Other times, these missions are done in conjunction with the national militaries of other countries, as the commandos add special knowledge and weaponry to assist regulars in tracking down insurgents or the leadership of violent nonstate groups.

[Related: An Air Force artificial intelligence program flew a drone fighter for hours]

Presently, these commando units are served by the U-28A Draco, an unarmed plane. The Draco can fly from short and rugged runways, and once in the sky can collect and relay valuable scouting information to people moving below on the ground.

The Draco is, unfortunately, expensive to maintain, and a finite number are in service. Plus, while it can alert troops below of any danger, it cannot actually move to fight enemies itself.

To service special operations, SOCOM asked for an affordable aircraft that’s cheaper to maintain and has an onboard human pilot. The plane should be capable of Close Air Support, or shooting and bombing people and vehicles on the ground from a low altitude. SOCOM also asked that it be armed for its scouting missions, and that it can help direct aerial attacks, ensuring that friendly forces are not hit by friendly fire.

While there are plenty of fighters already in the US inventory that can do some or all of this (though none particularly affordably), what sets SOCOM’s ask apart is that whatever plane it selects must be able to do so in austere environments, like dirt airfields with limited access to supplies. If the F-35 is built to fly out of a well-equipped and well-staffed hangar, SOCOM wants a plane that can fly and fight from the bare minimum of infrastructure necessary.

[Related: The stealth helicopters used in the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden are still cloaked in mystery]

In addition, the contract notes that these places are where commandos are tasked with “Countering Violent Extremist Organization missions.” Under the expansive rules of the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force, as well as partner agreements with many militaries across the globe, this means that the aircraft selected to support special operations could also protect allied soldiers fighting alongside American commandos.

Five different airplanes were selected as possible contenders for the broader contract. They are:

The Bronco II

The pusher-prop Bronco II (seen in the large image at the top of this story) by Leidos borrows its name from a larger Vietnam War-era plane that performed similar missions. While the II cannot transport people like its predecessor, it does have room for cargo storage, allowing it to perform light resupply tasks. With its high wing and stadium-seating cockpit, the Bronco II also bears more than a little resemblance to the AHRLAC, a South African built light close air support plane.

The MC-208 Guardian

If the Bronco II resembles a strange fighter, the MC-208 Guardian by Mag Aerospace feels like a private plane that a bored executive has outfitted for the most dangerous game. Camera pods can fit below its fuselage, and there are mounts for missiles or rockets on special hard points from its wings. For missions that require transport as well as overwatch, the Guardian can carry nine people besides its two-person flight crew.

The AT-6 Wolverine

Textron’s AT-6 Wolverine is a two-seat turboprop that can be armed to the teeth. It can mount cameras and other sensors. The Wolverine’s armament can include everything from heavy caliber machine guns to guided bombs or even Hellfire anti-tank missiles.

The Sky Warden. L3 Harris

The AT-802U Sky Warden

Superficially similar to the Wolverine is L3’s AT-802U Sky Warden. It can carry a blistering array of surveillance cameras to go alongside its weapons. L3 is also marketing it on cost, specifically framing it as 1/5th the cost of an F-16, and 1/18th the cost to operate per hour.

The MC-145B Wily Coyote

Rounding out the selection is the MC-145B Wily Coyote by Sierra Nevada Corporation, a plane for which there exists very little publicly available information. It is most likely similar to the C-145A Combat Coyote, a twin-engine craft with capacity for 16 passengers. The Combat Coyote is built largely for cargo runs and air-dropped relief, so it will be interesting to see how that basic airframe is adapted to actual combat.

SOCOM expects to evaluate the five prototypes by March 2023. After that, should the military find a design it likes, it will have to convince Congress of the plane’s necessity, in order to secure dedicated funding for the project. If that can be approved, SOCOM hopes to buy 75 of the winning aircraft within 5-7 years from the award of a purchasing contract.

Can Dogeliens Surpass Dogecoin And Shiba Inu To Become The Best Meme Coin?

Memes are viral within the internet space. Often used to describe a viral picture or video, the word meme, from the Greek word “mimema,” meaning “imitated,” was coined by Richard Dawkins in his book, The Selfish Gene. Memes, however, did not become mainstream until the Web 2.0 Internet era, and ever since, memes have grown to become a viable media empire.

Contrary to popular opinion, the development of a digital cash system was not well received by all, as some thought it to be a wasteful and superficial idea. Jackson Palmer and his buddy, on the 6th of December 2013, launched an altcoin named Dogecoin as a joke to mock people’s expectations about cryptocurrencies at the time. The coin was based on the popular internet dog meme, hence was called a meme coin. The coin, however, gained a lot of traction, prompting the developers to act on it and push it to become mainstream, creating an entire niche in the crypto world for meme coins. Although the meme coins industry has boomed over the years with numerous meme coins being produced,  Dogecoin still maintains a hegemony in the industry as the best meme coin, with the Shiba Inu coin coming a close second. Ranking 13th according to CoinMarketCap, the Shiba Inu coin is an ERC-20 token used to power the Shiba world. It consists of three separate tokens; SHIB, BONE, and LEASH. Shiba Inu saw many price spikes thanks to Elon Musk’s interest in meme coins. This article unravels Dogeliens, a newly launched meme coin, and plans to take over the meme coins world.

The Ecosystem is fully equipped with an Academy, an NFTs marketplace, and P2E (Play to Earn) Games. The academy will have a plethora of content relating to crypto and basic skills like reading, mathematics, and Geography. The University of Barkington is a unique blockchain educational center. It provides an Avenue for users to learn about everything crypto, ranging from NFTs, Blockchain, and DeFi. The NFTs marketplace allows Dogeliens Holders to mint their own NFTs, which can be traded and used in the P2E games. The P2E games are the most fun niches in the puptopia. Members can battle their Dogeliens against others and even team up with up to 3 other friends in the Pup-Litter(squad) mode. There are several games available on the platform, ensuring users have many options to pick from. With Metaverse and GameFi becoming increasingly popular, Dogeliens seeks to strike while the iron is hot and gain a competitive edge in the market. The native token of the ecosystem is the $DOGET, which would be the sole utility token of the ecosystem. The token’s total supply is 25,000,000,000, 30% of which would go towards the presale. There would be a two-month vesting period for all presale tokens to allow everyone a fair opportunity to join the Metaverse invasion.

You Can Now Own A Stock Car That’s Just Like What Nascar Pros Race

For less than the price of a Porsche 911 GT3, you can buy a stock car just like the ones that hammer around NASCAR ovals—and then take it to the track yourself. That’s the promise of the Hendrick Track Attack Camaro and Chevrolet SS track day cars, which promise to put you into a driver’s seat that is very much like the one Jimmie Johnson slides into weekly.

Prestigious sports car manufacturers like Porsche and Ferrari have made a tidy side business selling their trademark sports cars with upgrades to make them more suitable for race tracks than for commuting. In fact, vehicles like the Porsche 911 GT3 and the Ferrari Pista proved to be thrillingly fast and fabulously capable when we track-tested them last year. But they are not only expensive to buy, they can be eye-wateringly costly to repair.

This was the observation of Bill Snider, director of the Track Attack program for Hendrick Motorsports, the team that has won a raft of NASCAR championships with drivers Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. For less than those souped-up sports cars cost, wannabe racers could buy a stock car from Hendrick’s racing stable, he figured.

And when they crash it, drivers will be better protected inside the stock car’s steel safety cage and the car will be far less expensive to repair than one of those automotive gems from Stuttgart or Maranello. “It is more inexpensive to buy one of our cars, it is safer, and if it is tuned right, it is faster,” Snider says.

The Hendrick team has some design innovations in its version of Chevrolet stock cars that it’s understandably wanted to keep secret from competitors. But now that teams have had to lock in their designs for the 2023 season, and new rules for 2023 require all-new cars with more shared standardized parts, there is no reason for Hendrick to keep its car technology to itself.

The Hendrick Track Attack cars are not watered-down stock cars with generic designs and components, according to Lance McGrew, who oversees construction of the cars at Hendrick. Indeed, the first Track Attack car for a customer was originally meant to be a backup road racing car for one of the team’s race drivers.

“We were super careful about letting some of our technology get out, but now this car is how we would have brought it to the race track,” McGrew says.

Teams like Hendrick Motorsports build specific cars for NASCAR’s races on curvy road courses such as Watkins Glen rather than the banked, left-turning ovals. Track-day customers normally also drive on their local road courses, so the suspension in Track Attack cars is optimized for that duty.

Hendrick’s secrets lay mostly in the front suspension, McGrew says, in details of geometry, the camber and caster settings, lower control arm lengths, and height of the front spindles/steering knuckles. “Our cars turn really well on the road courses,” McGrew says proudly. “We’ve worked on that for years and years, so that’s proprietary information as far as we’re concerned. But now it’s not something you’ve got to keep a lid on.”

The result? Anyone with $125,000 now has access to the deepest secrets of Hendrick’s chassis technology in a Camaro or SS-bodied stock car that looks, sounds, and drives just like the ones the team races.

The chassis of a Track Attack vehicle. Hendrick Motorsports

That means a full 1.75-inch diameter steel tube chassis with adjustable front double-wishbone suspension and rear trailing arm suspension for the solid axle. Shocks are Penske racing dampers with no external adjustments, and brakes are AP Racing one-piece aluminum units, six-piston front calipers and four-piston rears.

There’s an ATL explosion-suppressing fuel cell to hold the gasoline, same as in the race cars, and the car rolls on the same steel racing wheels from Aero Race Wheels. The driver sits in Hendrick’s own carbon fiber NASCAR-compliant racing seat and looks at an AIM Technologies MXG 1.2 Strada data display. Traditionalists who don’t want the LCD screen spoiling their NASCAR fantasy can specify NASCAR Cup-style analog instruments instead, McGrew said.

For that base car, customers will get an off-the-shelf 627-horsepower, 586 pound-foot, 454 cubic-inch General Motors small block LSX V8 with a dry sump oil system and forged rotating parts. It connects to a standard Andrews A431 four-speed manual transmission with short-throw H-pattern shifter. The engine is a production-based powerplant, but the gearbox is the very same one used in NASCAR Cup racing, complete with multiple gear ratios that can be installed.

If the idea of a street car engine powering your race replica doesn’t sit right with you, Hendrick will go ahead and sell you the whole-hog 725-hp, 490 pound-foot, 358-cubic-inch Hendrick Motorsports R07 V8.

Sequential gearboxes allow faster shifts and they make it less likely that drivers will miss a shift and over-rev the engine, so they are popular with racers. With NASCAR moving to that technology after this season, Hendrick will build your car with a Race Tech 6XD sequential six-speed with optional automatic rev matching. Calibrating the software for that rev matching was a chore the team finished just in time for the car’s announcement, McGrew says.

Add all the options and the Track Attack car’s price tag could reach $175,000, but most of the cars are expected to sell in the $125,000 to $150,000 range, Snider predicts.

However, some customers are reportedly interested in spending even more money. NASCAR will be switching to independent rear suspension from the traditional solid rear axle design in 2023, and some prospective customers are asking for this on the Track Attack car, Snider says.

Hendrick is considering an independent rear suspension option for the car, though the solid axle design is so well engineered that “if your springs are tight enough, you might not be able to tell the difference,” he says.

Mix and match your perfect matrix of engine, transmission and rear suspension, then pick the Camaro or SS body to adorn your new toy and head out for a track day. It will cost less to buy than an exotic European sports car, and you’ll be able to drive it all-out. Plus, you can remain comfortable in the knowledge that crunching it into a tire barrier will almost certainly be a reasonable repair bill rather than a potential write-off from a fragile unibody production-car chassis.
