Huawei Launches Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro And Mate 10 Porsche Design

Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Huawei has officially announced the brand new Mate 10 series of smartphones. The series consists of the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and Mate X Porsche Design. All three devices feature a FullView bezel-less display and Leica dual camera setup.

The company announced the phones during an event earlier today, and stressed heavily on Artificial Intelligence. That’s because, the Mate 10 series features its very own NPU (Neural Processing Unit) chip and relies heavily on AI. That’s directly competing with the iPhone 8 and its A11 Bionic chipset.

So what’s new with the Mate 10 series? Well, find out below.

Huawei Mate 10 Specs

Design and Display

The Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and the Mate 10 Porsche Design feature a new FullView display with super slim bezels and HDR10 support. The Mate 10 has a 5.9-inch LCD display with 16:9 aspect ratio and 2560 x 1440 resolution (QHD), whereas the Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design come with a 6-inch AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2160 x 1080 resolution.

On the Mate 10, the Home Button and fingerprint sensor are placed at the front of the device, while the Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design has this button at the back, below the dual camera setup. All three devices are mostly made up of Toughened glass, and feature a distinctive strip underneath the camera setup.

Camera

The cameras are a mobile first, in terms of aperture size. The dual camera setup from Leica includes a 12 MP RGB sensor and a 20 MP Monochrome sensor, both with f/1.6 aperture. Both the cameras feature Optical Image Stabilization. At the front, there’s an 8 MP selfie unit. This is of course same for all three models of the Mate 10 series lineup.

Hardware

Huawei has included the Kirin 970 8-core CPU, 12-core Mali G72 GPU, up to 6GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage. Only the Porsche Design variant comes with the option to include 256GB of storage. The phones feature a 4000mAh battery that supports Huawei’s Supercharge technology.

Huawei has included a 3.5mm headphone jack on the Mate 10, while the other two lack it. All three feature an USB Type C port, dual-SIM, and while Mate 10 Pro is IP67 certified, the Mate 10 make do with IP53 rating. The Mate 10 will come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and the Mate 10 Pro will come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage.

Software

All three Mate 10 smartphones will come with EMUI 8.0 custom software, which is based on Android 8.0 Oreo. It’ll also be heavily focused on AI, as mentioned earlier, and that will be prominent throughout the software.

For example, in the Camera software, the AI and the NPU chip can tell what kind of scene you’re shooting and automatically adjust the settings for the best possible result. You can also translate text by taking a picture of it.

The Mate 10 will use the NPU to learn how you use your phone and will automatically improve the battery life and performance based what it learns. Huawei has also given third-party app developers access to the NPU to create apps. This means that the CPU and GPU won’t have to word hard in certain conditions.

Pricing and Availability

As per Huawei, the Mate 10 series will be available in more than 15 countries across the globe. The Mate 10 will start at €699 and will be available later this month, in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Philippines, China, Egypt, Malaysia, Spain, and the UAE. The Mate 10 Pro will cost €799, and will available in all markets mention right before, plus few more countries. The Mate 10 Porsche Design will cost you a ton at €1395, and should be available in these countries as well by mid-November.

Huawei Mate 30 And Mate 30 Pro: All You Need To Know

These days, deciding on a high-end smartphone has become impossibly strenuous. Big hitters like Samsung and Nokia don’t have the upper hand they once had, with newcomers, such as OnePlus and Xiaomi stealing a big chunk of their market share.

Now, if you thought that browsing four, five OEM websites would help you land the best possible smartphone, you’re sadly out of luck. There are a bunch of other, capable companies, and the one we’re discussing today is probably at the top of the food chain.

Huawei may not be as recognizable as some of its competitors, but enthusiasts can’t possibly ignore the company’s latest offerings. Brushing aside recent controversies, Huawei has recently unveiled two new entrants to its Mate XX family — Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. As always, Huawei has left no stone unturned to make the devices as head-turning as possible.

Coming in Emerald Green, Space Silver, Cosmic Purple, Black, and two vegan leather variants — Forest Green and Orange — and sporting a distinguishable circular camera cutout on the back, Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro have all it takes to make a mark. With the design and color options out of the way, let’s look at the raw internals.

Mate 30 Pro 5G variant tops the chart at €1199

Instigated by Donald Trump’s intervention, Google withdrew Huawei’s license to use Android’s services on its future smartphones. While that doesn’t affect the current devices, any device that Huawei launches in the future (including the two we’are discussing here) can’t have any Google apps. As per this embargo, you won’t be able to access any of Google’s apps, including Gmail, YouTube, and even Google Play.

Huawei already didn’t sell its devices directly in the US, and this recent ban complicates things even further. The Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro won’t be available in every region across Europe, and the devices won’t be sold in the United Kingdom, either. The company has confirmed that the devices would eventually make their way to Australia, but pricing and availability haven’t been confirmed.

As for pricing, Huawei Mate 30 will cost you €799, while Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G will set you back €1099 and €1199, respectively.

Can you add Google Play Store and Play Services to Mate 30?

As we’ve already established, the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro do not come with any of Google’s applications, including Play Store. It most definitely will be a dealbreaker for many people, but if you’re willing to look beyond the obvious and jump a couple of hoops, there’s a pretty simple way to get most (if not all) of Google’s apps.

[Note: You’ll need to grant permission to download apps other than the Huawei app store.]

Step 2: The app needs to be your device administrator to work as intended. The instructions, as expected, are in Chinese, but the process is quite simple. You’ll be able to see which permissions are being requested by Google Service Assistant and can tap on the blue button to proceed.

Step 3: Wait for the Assistant to Google Mobile Services and Google Play. After completion, tap on the blue button.

Step 4: Restart your device and download your favorite Google apps from Google Play. As it’s not officially supported by Google, apps that require DRM — such as Google Pay — won’t work on the Mate 30/Pro.

Great Accessories For Your Android Tablets

Some Android tablets have unique features that set the devices apart from Apple’s iPad 2. Toshiba is offering its Tablet with a replaceable battery option, which users can buy for $89. Keyboards for Motorola’s Xoom and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab are available with specific keys that make it easy to use and navigate the Android OS. Other handy accessories such as M-Edge’s Convertible Sleeve can be used for both e-readers and tablets.

Motorola Xoom Accessories

Motorola is also selling a speaker dock for $129.99 and a standard dock for $49.99, both for the Xoom. Motorola’s online store also offers an HDMI cable at $39.99 to connect the Xoom to high-definition TVs. The site also offers cases and covers for $29.99.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Accessories

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is available with a 7-inch screen, though a 10-inch version is due out later this year. The company offers the Full Size Keyboard Dock, which offers more features than the product name suggests. A dock at the top can keep the Tab charged and connect the tablet to the keyboard. Another cool feature is a headphone jack outlet at the back of the keyboard, which could be handy when trying to maintain silence. It’s unclear if the dock will accommodate the upcoming 10-inch Tab. The Keyboard Dock is priced at $79.99 on Samsung’s website.

Other Tab accessories include Samsung’s $19.99 Conductive Style, a digital pen stylized like a “premium writing instrument,” according to the company. A range of covers and cases are available on Samsung’s website, with the protective covers priced at $29.99, and leather cases starting at $49.99.

BlackBerry PlayBook Accessories

Staples also houses some accessories for non-Android tablets like Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, a 7-inch tablet that will begin shipping in mid-April starting at $499. Included are a $69.99 Rapid Charging Pod, a $49.99 Leather Convertible Case and a $59.99 Leather Book Binder, which looks like an e-reader case. Accessory maker Targus has listed a nylon Truss case for the PlayBook, which is listed at $34.99, though it is not yet available for order. Targus is also offering a leather Zierra portfolio case for the PlayBook priced at $54.99.

Multifunctional Sleeves

M-Edge is selling a $29.99 sleeve that can be used not only for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, but also Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-readers. Calling it “Convertible Sleeve,” M-Edge says the jacket gives users the “best of both worlds by combining the functionality of a jacket with the security of a sleeve.” The front of the sleeve has four small pockets on the edges to hold a tablet or e-reader when in use.

Samsung Tab on the Wall Toshiba’s “Screwdriver Savvy” Tablet

Toshiba Tablet, an upcoming 10.1-inch tablet, will include the unique ability to replace a battery, a feature not available in competing tablets. Toshiba says consumers have to only be “screwdriver savvy,” and a replacement battery is already available for pre-order on Staples’ tablet promotion site priced at $89.99. Other accessories for Toshiba Tablet listed include a case ($39.99), a back cover ($19.99) and a tablet pen ($14.99). In all, the Staples tablet website is a good one-stop shop that lists accessories for Toshiba Tablet and other devices. The release date and price for the Toshiba Tablet have not yet been announced.

Apple Airpods Pro Vs Huawei Freebuds 3: The Pro Or The Clone?

Which one has a better design?

Both earbuds have sensors on the inside and outside that allow them to auto-pause when one is removed from your ear.

On the other hand, the AirPods Pro features a brand new design that most people will still find familiar. Just like the good ‘ol wired earbuds of the past, the AirPods Pro come with three different silicone eartips – large, medium, and small. This change helps account for the variety in human ears, meaning they’ll comfortably fit a wider range of people. Not everyone will find a perfect fit, but Apple finally seemed to realize how important a good seal is for blocking outside sound from reaching your ears. There’s even a fit test that you can take in order to make sure that you’re using the correct eartips. To no one’s surprise, this test can only be done from an an iOS device.

The AirPods Pro and the Freebuds 3 both come with super portable charging cases that snap shut magnetically.

The cases for each pair of ‘buds are similar, though not identical. The AirPods Pro has a rectangular case while the Freebuds 3 have a circular case, but both are super easy to use and even easier to carry around in your pocket. The smooth white plastic is fairly similar on both, and the lid snaps shut almost exactly the same. There’s even a similar metal hinge on there back of both cases. Taking either pair of ‘buds one out of its respective case is almost the exact same experience. Magnets help both earbuds snap into place so you don’t have to worry about whether or not they’re charging.

Between the new design that prioritizes a better fit and the fact that the Freebuds 3 design is just a rip off of the original AirPods, this was a pretty easy one to judge. The AirPods Pro wins this category by a landslide.

Which true wireless earbuds have better active noise cancelling?

The primary feature Apple and HUAWEI tout for their earbuds is active noise cancelling, so let’s compare. The way to read the graphs below is easier than it looks. All you need to know is that the higher the peaks, the more noise is being cancelled. The closer the line is to 0dB (or if it’s flat), the less outside noise is being cancelled.

Which one sounds better?

When it comes down to it, these are both still earbuds and sound quality is still important. Obviously, neither is going to give you reference-level quality or over-ear amounts of bass due to the small drivers inside, but that doesn’t mean they sound bad. For earbuds, they both actually sound pretty good, though they take different approaches.

By looking at the  frequency response graphs for both pairs of earbuds, you can see that the AirPods Pro tends to have a slight bump in the low end (pink), which means that bass notes will sound a little louder when compared to other notes. Compare that to the Freebuds 3, which has a sharp dip in the low end that trails off in the deep lows, and it’s easier to understand why the Freebuds have such weak bass response. This is most likely due to the open-air fit of the Freebuds 3, while silicone eartips help seal up the AirPods Pro. By physically blocking your ear canal, rather than just sitting in it, the AirPods Pro are able to keep a lot of those low-end frequencies in your ear instead of leaking them out.

This concept also applies to outside sounds coming in. Where the AirPods Pro block outside sound by physically being in your ears, the Freebuds 3 let sound in easily, making it harder for you to hear the low-end notes of your favorite songs.

The earbuds fit snug in the ear canal now thanks to dedicated nozzles.

That said, the story changes a bit as we move up the frequency response graph. Where the HUAWEI Freebuds 3 appear to have a relatively flat line in the mids (pink to green), meaning there is no extra emphasis given to those notes, the AirPods Pro line is a little bumpy in that area. This means instruments like guitars and vocals, which reside in these frequencies, will sound a little clearer and more natural on the Freebuds 3 since there is little to no extra volume given to them.

The highs were more emphasized in the Freebuds 3 when compared to the AirPods Pro, so cymbals and certain aspects of human vocals should sound a little louder. That makes sense since the design of the Freebuds 3 allows outside noise in. The extra emphasis in the highs should help you hear those extra details.

The HUAWEI Freebuds 3 have a touch-sensitive stem that you can tap for playback controls or to activate the active noise cancelling.

So which one sounds better? As always, sound quality mainly comes down to preference, but in this situation, it also helps to think about the use case. The AirPods and Freebuds are probably going to be used as an everyday pair of ‘buds that you’ll carry everywhere. Because of that, you’ll likely get a better experience from the AirPods Pro since the ear tips allow for better isolation from the outside (even without the active noise cancelling.) The passive sound isolation will also come in handy if you tend to listen to bass-heavy music, as lower notes are the hardest to hear when there’s outside noise leaking in. Whether I’m listening to music or the AA podcast, I prefer the isolation in this situation just because it fits what I listen to a little better.

Let’s talk microphones

We have to talk about microphone quality. You can see on the graphs above how the HUAWEI Freebuds 3 have a slight emphasis in the low end of the vocal range. The result here is that lower voices will be picked up by the microphone easier than with the AirPods Pro. Still, this is one of those things that it’s easier for you to just hear for yourself. It’s a close call, but we’re giving this one to the HUAWEI Freebuds 3.

Which one has the better connection?

The earbuds come in two colors: black or this glossy white.

Similarly, HUAWEI has the Kirin A1 chip inside its ’buds with Bluetooth 5.1. This allows each earbud to receive audio data from the source device individually, resulting in shorter lag and fewer skips. Overall, the A1 chip makes for a good experience, one that even rivals the seamless experience of AirPods. The HUAWEI Freebuds 3 also have a copycat pop-up card to pair easily with your HUAWEI device. To pair with non-HUAWEI devices, you’ll have to hold down the Bluetooth pairing button on the side of the case for two seconds to enter pairing mode, and then connect via the phone’s Bluetooth menu.

As far as connection strength goes, I had no issues with skipping or stuttering for either of these. The respective radios inside held up nicely to everyday use. Both worked fine whether my phone was in my pocket or across the room, and the only time they disconnected was when I intentionally tested the range. I was able to push both to around 40 feet with a wall or two in between before the connection lapsed. As long as you’re not expecting to leave your house without your source device, then you shouldn’t have any issues.

Both Apple and HUAWEI offer the best experience to those who choose to use matching products. When it comes down to it, this one is too close to call.

Which one is easier to use?

An indentation on each stem indicates where you may press to control playback and switch between listening modes.

What about playback controls? Both have the same basic playback controls, and both lack true volume controls.

I found the squeezable stem of the AirPods Pro consistently worked perfectly. Comparatively, the tap-sensitive HUAWEI Freebuds 3 was a little hit or miss. I found myself double-tapping the Freebuds two or three times before they performed the correct function. True, these issues were few and far between, and for the most part the controls work fine, but I had almost no issues with the AirPods Pro and its squeezable stem.

Which one has the better battery life?

This section is probably the easiest to gauge. On background, we test all headphones at a constant output of 75dB, which is just below the levels that can result in noise-induced hearing loss. Once we’ve achieved a volume of 75dB, we play a mix of music on repeat until the battery dies. With this method, the AirPods Pro lasted 5 hours and 6 minutes when connected to an iPad Pro. Apple claims that the charging case will give you about 24 hours of extra listening time.

The HUAWEI Freebuds 3 charge via USB-C, which gives them the edge over the AirPods Pro when it comes to futureproofing.

The HUAWEI Freebuds 3 managed to get about 4 hours and 7 minutes running the same test connected to a P30 Pro. The charging case provides another 20 hours of listening time and only takes about an hour to charge up from zero to one hundred.

As far as the earbuds are concerned, the AirPods Pro outperforms the Freebuds 3 by an hour. That said, the Freebuds 3 charging case is hands down the one I’d prefer. While both cases are made of fairly similar (cheap-feeling) plastic, and both can charge wirelessly with any Qi-wireless charger, the Freebuds 3 charging case uses the (industry standard) USB-C. Apple opted for its own Lightning connector, which is the same cable current iPhones rely on. Thanks to the USB-C future-proofing, the Freebuds 3 case is more appealing.
