ACER Iconia Tab A501 with AT&T 4G hands-on
Say hello to the newest 4G Android tablet, the ACER Iconia Tab A501. What we have here is the twin brother to the popular Tab A500 yet this bad boy has been treated to some AT&T 4G love. Before we get ahead of ourselves I’ll start by mentioning this is not 4G LTE, instead it features AT&T 4G HSPA+ speeds. We might not have LTE but she cruises along just fine, that and the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor helps. Read on below for our first impressions and some hands-on video.
The ACER A501 might not be as thin or light as, say, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but it does offer a few unique features that the Galaxy Tab and a few other tablets don’t. Everyone should be well aware of this tablets spec sheet but just in case we’ll go over what’s under the hood before getting to the video.
We have Android 3.0.1 Honeycomb out of the box, a 10.1″ 1280 x 800 resolution display, NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1.0 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, AT&T HSPA+ 4G connectivity and more. Then like most tablets we also have a 5 MP shooter on the rear with LED flash, 2MP up front for video, and a host of inputs and connections for all your various needs.
Like mentioned above, it might not be the thinnest nor the lightest but the input options make up the difference. We have a dock connector on bottom as seen in the photo up top, as well as full sized USB, micro-USB, and micro-HDMI pictured below. Then your usual power/wake and volume rockers and screen orientation lock. We have a full in-depth review of the twin brother the ACER A500 you can see here for more details. This is about the AT&T 4G so I’ve gone ahead and ran a few speedtests and I’ll post those below.
Powering this device we have AT&T 4G connectivity but sadly it’s only the HSPA+ and not the next-gen LTE networks. While this may be a deal breaker for some I’ve noticed reasonably decent speeds that rival almost every other carrier except for that of Verizon and their LTE of course. I have however noticed that since this is not the new LTE network, and is the very capable and wide reaching HSPA+ network I’ve had zero issues having service everywhere I go, and I always have a full chart of network bars. My Galaxy Tab with Verizon 4G LTE didn’t have that same luxury as they are still slowly expanding that network.
4G performance was pretty stable and reliable, I’ve yet to see it switch between two different types so I’ve not had a single hiccup with anything I’ve done thus far. Speedtest results were about average and I’m getting around 3500 kbps down and sadly the upload speeds are the weakest link. Overall browsing seems stable, fast, and almost as quick as Wi-Fi and the AT&T network seems to be holding its own very well.

How to download the correct firmware file
This is an important part!
Be sure to check and find the correct model no. of your Galaxy Tab S2. Then, based on your device’s model no., look for the appropriate firmware build from above.
Now that you know the model no., download the latest firmware from above for that model no. exactly.
Next, install the firmware on your Galaxy Tab S2 by following the guide linked right below.
How to install a firmware
First, read our disclaimer, then take backup and then follow the guide below to install the firmware.
Disclaimer: Installing an official firmware through Odin doesn’t void your device’s warranty, but it remains an unofficial process and thus you need to be cautious of it. In any case, you only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.
Backup, backup, backup! Create an appropriate backup of contacts, pictures, videos, songs and other important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have a backup of all your important files. Sometimes, firmware installation may delete everything on your device! Like, when you change the CSC of your device, knowingly or not.
Step-by-step Firmware Installation Guide
Let’s see how to install the firmware on your Galaxy Tab S2. Make sure you have more than 30% battery on your device.
Step 1. Make sure you have downloaded the correct firmware file on your PC. See above for how to download correct firmware file for your Galaxy Tab S2 and download links.
Step 3. Also, download Odin PC software (latest version).
Step 5. Extract the Odin file. You should get the Odin exe file (other files could be hidden, hence not visible).
Step 6. Disconnect your Galaxy Tab S2 from PC if it is connected.
Step 7. Boot into download mode:
Power off your device. Wait for 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
Press and hold the three buttons Volume down + Home + Power together until you see the Warning screen.
Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.
Step 9. Connect your device now using the USB cable. Odin should recognize your device. It’s a must. When it recognizes, you will see Added!! message appearing in the Log box in the bottom left, and the first box under ID:COM will also show a no. and turn its background blue. Look at the pic below.
You cannot proceed until you get the Added!! message, which confirms that Odin has recognized your device.
If you don’t get Added!! message, you need to install/re-install drivers again, and use the original cable that came with the device. Mostly, drivers are the problem (look at step 2 above).
You can try different USB ports on your PC too.
Load the firmware files(s) on your device. This depends on how many files you got in step 4 above upon extracting the firmware .zip file.
Case 1: If you got a single .tar/.tar.md5 file, then load this into AP tab of your Odin software. Then go to next step.
Case 2: If you got more than one .tar/.tar.md5 file, then you must be having files starting with AP, CSC, Home_CSC, BL, CP, etc. stuff. In this case, choose the files as follows. Select the firmware files as follows.
About CSC file: Using the HOME_CSC file won’t reset your device, and data on the phone shouldn’t be deleted. However, when we select regular CSC file, and it results in CSC on the device being different than that in CSC file, your phone will be formatted automatically. You can even choose to ignore loading the CSC file, that may do alright too. But if it doesn’t work out, repeat the whole process and select CSC file this time around.
Info: When you load files, Odin checks the md5 of firmware file, which takes time. So, simply wait until that’s done and the firmware file is loaded. Don’t worry if Odin gets unresponsive for a while, it’s normal. Binary size will also show up in Odin.
Go back to Log tab now, as it will show the progress of firmware installation when you hit the start button in next step.
Wait till installation is finished, after which your device will reboot automatically. You’ll get PASS message as shown below upon successful installation from Odin.
Some errors you may run into, and with respective solution.
If Odin gets stuck at setup connection, then you need to do this all again. Disconnect your device, close Odin, boot device into download mode again, open Odin, and then select the file and flash it again as said above.
If you get FAIL in the top left box, then also you need to flash the file again as stated just above.
That’s it. Let the device restart automatically.

Acer Announces New Gaming Lineup For 2023
Today Acer ran a live-streamed digital event, showcasing a broad selection of their upcoming product and devices. Particularly of interest was some of their new gaming focussed machines under their Predator banner. They’ve got some new gaming laptops on the way, an updated version of their gaming desktop systems, and a new top-end high-performance gaming monitor. Read on for details of the freshly announced new gaming lineup from Acer.
Laptops
Predator Helios 700
Acer announced an update to their high-performance beast of a laptop for 2023. This is a gaming laptop built to perform more like a desktop system when you need it to. It has a convertible form factor, which lets you slide out a portion of the keyboard section of the machine, to allow for more powerful cooling for extended gaming performance. Acer calls this design “HyperDrift keyboard”, and say that it gives this laptop great thermal management.
In addition to offering the latest top-end 10th Gen Intel processors, GPUs up to the GeForce RTX 2080 Super, and RAM configurations up to 64GB, the Helios 700 also comes with a 144Hz G-Sync compatible 17.3-inch display.
The Helios 700 will start at $2,399.99, and be available in the US from October. More precise information on the different configurations and pricing will be made available at a later date.
Predator Helios 300
A more standard laptop layout here, but still with plenty of grunt. Again Acer have updated this model with 10th Generation Intel chips, and the latest GPUs from Nvidia. The Helios 300 comes equipped with a 15.6-Inch 240 Hz display, and supports RAM configurations of up to 32GB.
The Predator Helios 300 will be available in the US starting in July, and will start at $1,199.99
Predator Triton 300
Acer’s slim and light gaming machine, designed to offer great gaming performance in a small frame. This machine weighs in at 4.63 lbs, and is just 0.78 inches thick, and is designed with a metal frame. Again this 2023 revision offers 10th Generation Intel CPUs, and offers the Nvidia RTX 2070 GPU with Max-Q GPU.
It features a 240Hz 15.6-Inch display, that supports 100% of the sRGB color space.
The Predator Triton 300 will launch in the US in September and will start at $1,299.99.
Nitro 7
Acer’s other option for a relatively lightweight gaming machine is the Nitro 7, this is a 5.51 lbs machine with a 15.6-inch display, and a metal frame. Again this features the latest 10th Generation Intel processor and GPU up to the GeForce RTX 2060.
The Nitro 7 features a dual-fan cooling system, with four exhaust ports, to ensure it remains cool even during extended gaming sessions.
This is Acer’s budget gaming option, starting at $999.99 when it launches in October.
Desktops
Predator Orion 9000 Desktop
Acer’s updated top-end gaming system is the 2023 Orion 9000, is focussed on extreme gaming performance. With CPU options up to the 10th Generation Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition, and GPU options up to Dual GeForce RTX 2080 Ti in SLI mode, this is more than capable of handling any games at high resolutions and framerates. It comes fitted a handle and even a set of wheels for easily moving the system around.
The updated fans give 16% more airflow than the previous model, and they’ve darkened the internal components to let the extensive array of RGB lighting really stand out
There’s no pricing or release date confirmed for the US, but it will be launching in Europe in October, starting at €2,799.
Predator Orion 3000
Next on the list is the slightly more conventional-looking Orion 3000, which is a standard mid-sized tower design, intended to easily fit in your gaming space. This comes with CPUs up to the 10th Generation Intel i7, and comes with GPUs up to the RTX 2060 Super.
The Orion 3000 is confirmed for a September release in the US, starting at $999.99.
Nitro 50
The Nitro 50 will start at $799.99 when it launches in the US in September.
Predator x25 Gaming Monitor
A new impressive top-end gaming monitor from Acer here, that offers 360Hz support, is fully G-sync compatible, at 1080p.
The AdaptiveLight feature illuminated the area behind and surrounding the monitor, with color to match the action on the screen. This is intended to make gaming more immersive and reduce eye strain.
The LightSense sees the monitor detecting ambient lighting conditions in the nearby vicinity, and tune brightness setting automatically to match the environment.
But new gaming hardware wasn’t all Acer had to announce.

You won’t find expensive displays, quad-core processors or touchscreens here, but what you have is a cheap device with excellent battery life that can help kids do their homework, families organise their lives, and pretty much all the basics that most people want most of the time. It’s also lightweight and acts like a proper laptop rather than some weird hybrid. Old-school, with modern aesthetics and performance.

Acer has updated its Chromebook lineup, with the new range including the CB314, a cheap and cheerful model that could be ideal for students, younger users or simply someone who needs an inexpensive laptop that can still handle a range of apps and tasks. We put it through its paces in our full review to see if this would be money well spent.
Design & Build Quality
Acer has opted for a steely blue livery for the Chromebook 314’s plastic chassis, and we have to say that it does make this a very handsome device.
The top cover is a plain, matt finish adorned with the Acer and Chrome logos. Twin, downward-facing speakers are located on the bottom panel, along with the rubber feet that prevent the CB314 from slipping around when used on a desk.
There’s no touch option on this model and the hinges are classic laptop style rather than some of the 360-degree wraparound ones that are found on more expensive models like the Asus Chromebook C433TA.
Keyboard & Trackpad
Chromebooks are surprisingly consistent with their keyboards, in that most are decently built and comfortable to type upon. The one on this device fits the bill nicely, coming replete with the specialist keys that give you quick access to Search, recent apps, and fullscreen mode.
The island-style keyboard is a perfectly serviceable surface for working on, if a little spongy at times and the trackpad is a solid offering that supports gesture controls for navigating around ChromeOS.
DisplayIt’s not often that you find a Full HD, IPS panel on a cheaper Chromebook and the CB314 doesn’t buck that trend. Instead there’s the normal TN panel that can suffer a little from washed out colours, especially when you look at it off-angle.
This isn’t an issue if you intend to use the device just for yourself, but trying to show anything to others at the same time will prove a less than optimum experience unless they’re looking directly over your shoulder.
It’s bright enough for use in moderate sunlight and perfect for working chúng tôi 1366 x 768 resolution is again acceptable, but don’t expect pin-sharp text or rich colours on this laptop. You can get a model with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution
As we mentioned earlier, there’s no touch capabilities on this particular device, so if you intend to use lots of Android apps on your Chromebook, you may want to try a different machine.
Specs & Performance
Processing duties on the CB314 are handled by a dual-core 1.1GHz Intel Celeron N4000 that has a burst ability of 2.6GHz. It’s hardly a speedster in the silicon stakes, but Chromebooks don’t have the heft of Windows 10 to deal with, so these lower power chips often deliver fast performance, which is generally the case with the CB314.
One blip was that the video stream on Netflix would sometimes become stuck after switching tabs but the audio would continue. We spotted this behaviour on the Acer Chromebook 15 we reviewed last year and it’s a shame that it persists but it’s easily something you can live with if you tend not to leave a tab when streaming TV or movies.
The CPU is assisted in its tasks by 4GB of DDR4 RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage, although on our model only 22GB were actually available to use after the various system files and other software had taken their share. There’s also a 65GB model if you feel the need.
Again, ChromeOS is focussed on storing files in the cloud and Google offers 100GB free storage to everyone who buys a new Chromebook, so it should be good for most users.
Connectivity
With this heavy leaning on the internet, it’s good to see 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO, which will keep things ticking along nicely.
Putting the CB314 through our usual benchmarks returned scores of 45.8 on Jetstream 2 and 304.2 in Basemark 3.0, placing it in the lower end of Chromebooks we’ve tested but commensurate with the price tag.
On the flanks there are two USB 3.0 ports and two USB-C, a microSD slot, headphone jack and a Kensington lock, which is a decent offering for a laptop in this price bracket.
Camera & Audio
Acer claims that the webcam on the CB314 is HD, but the performance suggests that’s a little generous. Video is grainy and doesn’t handle lighting very well, but you can make calls on Skype, Duo or your preferred app as long as your recipient is willing to put up with distinctly average visuals.
Audio is a similar case, with the twin speakers under the chassis producing tones that are light on base and slightly echoey at times. Again, usable but nothing that’s going to impress.
Battery Life
One area that does stand out is battery life. Looping an HD video on YouTube, with the screen set to 60% and the volume at 50%, the CB314 kept going for a remarkable 11 hours and 52 minutes.
Obviously, using a combination of other apps may reduce this time, but in comparison with many other Chromebooks we’ve tested this is excellent battery performance.
Software
ChromeOS has come a long way and today feels like a system that can cover most bases for general users. The addition of Android apps a while back opens up even more possibilities, although these usually remain in portrait formats that would normally be used on smartphones.
Google provides a wide range of default apps, including the excellent Google Office suite that includes Docs (Word), Sheets (Excel), and Slides (PowerPoint). It’s true that none of these will match the power of Microsoft’s offerings, but if your needs are modest then these should fit the bill and cost you nothing at all.
There’s also Google Keep for your notes, Calendar for appointments, and you can pair Messages with your phone so that you receive and reply to SMS conversations directly on your Chromebook. It’s also possible to connect Android phones so that they automatically unlock the laptop when it senses the handset nearby.
Gaming on the CB314 isn’t really worth the effort, as the lack of touch sensors means the Android titles are clunky, while the ChromeOS Web Store doesn’t have much in the way of quality titles.
Price & Availability
At the time of writing, Acer didn’t have the CB314 listed on its site although we expect this to be rectified shortly. Until then you can pick it up from Argos for £249.99 or Amazon UK for £229.99.
Oddly, Amazon has both the 32GB HD and 65GB Full HD models for the same price.

Verdict
Chromebook prices have been creeping up recently, along with most tech, so it’s good to see the Acer Chromebook 314 return to the formula that initially made them so appealing: cheap and useful.
There’s little in the way of bells and whistles on this device, the webcam is serviceable at best, plus the HD display and audio are perfunctory. Luckily Amazon has the Full HD/64GB model for the same price.
But, performance is solid, the device itself is lightweight and comfortable to use, battery life is excellent and it’s a very capable platform if you’re happy to use Google apps.
Essentially, it’s a Chromebook, at least the way they used to make them, and that’s a good thing.
